The frustration that had Mallan all worked up eased a slight knowing that Nina found what he did to the cat humorous. It did not matter to Mallan that she thought him completely innocent and that the cat’s actions were its own. He did feel guilty about hiding his actions but he also was not comfortable revealing his ability to just anyone. Who knew what they would think or how they would react? What if they condemned him like his parents had? It was something Mallan did not want to think about, much less deal with, and so he let his actions remain hidden. Plus, that boy deserved it!
After he had packed up his belongings, Nina made a comment towards his art, which Mallan appreciated. A distraction from the previous topic was warmly welcome even if he had worked towards her asking it. Of course he drew the sketches but it was an honest question and Mallan assumed there could have been multiple other reasons for him to be carrying the artwork but he replied with a playful smile nonetheless.
I did. Do you like them? I have another piece I would like to show you some time if you do.
The piece he had in mind was the Castle Wall Gardens, as Mallan named it. It was a garden sketch of flowers and vines that grew up the side of the castle wall. The unique and interesting part about it was how he had sketched it in the rain and the rain caused the paper to warp and the graphite to smear giving it a look of as if someone was looking through a glass window during the rain. To him, that was his masterwork so far. It had great detail and balance. With his book bag strap over his shoulder and Nina’s arm around his again, Mallan made his way through the foyer and the rest of the ground floor and ending at the Hufflepuff common room.
Would you like a continued tour of the rest of the school grounds?
He wanted to make sure that she actually wanted to be with him since he did force her into the tour with himself. He felt bad; after everything with Narcisse, Mallan felt like he actually had ignored Nina whether or not he really had. He couldn’t imagine having a brother like Narcisse; that would be horrific. He felt as if he should protect her from him for some reason. Then the thought struck him; he had been overly friendly with Nina. With that, Mallan forgot about his worries for Nina and began worrying how Caitlin would have felt if she had seen them. “I’ll make it up to her,” Mallan promised. Mallan was always friendly with anyone and sometimes to the point of flirting but it would never occur to Mallan until after the fact.
