Having his head turned, Mallan heard Caitlin’s thoughts about his surprises but thought that she was merely speaking under her breath. It didn’t occur to him that she had thought them and he had picked them up due to their joining. Instead he just let them slide without comment; there was not any way to really reply without sounding completely arrogant. He knew his surprises were going to be worth it and that was all that mattered at the moment. He could not reveal them to her otherwise they would be ruined anyhow.
His focus had been on Caitlin and so Mallan did not even notice Veranda coming in. He was surprised when Caitlin responded to his thoughts. He had totally forgotten about their joining and it seemed Caitlin had as well. Mallan decided he would surprise her as well by replying telepathically while she was looking at him. “Well yes. I understand that it is a simple spell, however, my technique is off.” Mallan projected to her. He was not about to mention that it was actually his telekinetic training that was interfering; at least, not yet.
Surprise hit him yet again when the professor suddenly decided to speak. It seemed like he had become a little too distracted with Caitlin because it seemed the class was starting and he didn’t even have his papers prepared yet; they were out but he had not headed them or anything. Listening to Professor Lochrest, Mallan’s ears perked up at the mention of casting the patronus charm. In the library he had passed over a brief description. The whole idea of the spell fascinated him. However, he was not about to be the first one to raise his hand admitting he knew nothing about casting the spell until he knew at least one other person did not, or was not able to, as well. So, Mallan found himself scanning the classroom hoping someone else would raise their hand soon.
Noticing Keaira’s hand go up, his hopes went up as well, but they fell as soon as she spoke. Mallan was confused at her comment. As far as he understood it was a charm; well, it had charm in the name from what he read. It seemed the professor had the same idea but elaborated. Mallan’s hopes went up when Tori raised her hand but then went down when before she could say anything Blaire spoke up. His hopes stayed down this time in fear that he may be the only one who was not able to summon a patronus. “Of course when I do not let my hopes rise they are then satiated,” Mallan rhetorically thought to himself, not meaning it for Caitlin “I remind myself of my godmother.”
Mallan was about to raise his hand and speak up when Dylan beat him to it. Dylan sounded a bit frustrated with his ability to summon a patronus and that concerned Mallan. He listened to his statement and waited to hear what the professor had to say. Shock caught Mallan as Professor Lochrest responded with an extremely idealistic and naive response; to the point of being insensitive. Mallan did not think that the professor was so detached from reality. He understood that he was idealistic but it did not seem even close to the purity of his professor. “What life has this man lived to act so carefree?” Mallan asked himself rhetorically not intending it for Caitlin. He was not surprised when Dylan stood up and left the classroom. It tore at Mallan’s heart; it would be rude to Caitlin for him to go after Dylan since he just asked Caitlin out and it hurt to think that he would not go after Dylan to help him. Sympathy for Dylan flooded Mallan as he remained in his seat. He knew that Dylan and D’rorah were dating and finally remembered his link with her and with Caitlin. D’rorah had shown him how to direct his thoughts so that only one of the two would hear and so Mallan directed a pleading thought to D’rorah. “Please explain to Dylan that I would but I couldn’t….” Mallan didn’t know how to end the thought and left it at that. A few moments passed before Mallan decided to raise his hand. He had to push back the sympathy so that his words were not affected.
Professor Lochrest? I am not able to summon a patronus at all. Well, I admit, I have not tried. I am… (There was a pause in his voice for a second as he reworded what he was going to say) not as experienced as the other students. Should I attempt such a spell if it is as advanced as you say? I am also curious… what are the full capabilities of a patronus; other than being a courier?
Mallan awaited the professor’s response with hope and curiosity. It was interesting that this ghostly form could be used in defense, but defense in what? As he waited, thoughts of Dylan came back into his mind. He would have to try and talk to Dylan after class.
