Glad to see no fuss made, Kerridon concentrated for a moment and a few seconds later they were back just outside the school gates, near the Forbidden Forest and hidden by the numerous trees around. He checked on Mami again to ensure she hadn’t been too badly affected by the sudden magical shift in location, then glanced up at the castle and grounds, trying to check for anything that might be a sign of being followed or watched.
Hopefully Phoenix’s thoughts would not immediately turn to checking if any Hogwarts students were not where they were supposed to be – there should be no sign that the escape was linked to the school, apart from the fact that Mami had been going there before her capture. They would have to find a reason for her being away so long, and again he would have to be careful of being openly seen with her at first. So much caution... but he could never be certain he knew all the spies at Hogwarts. New people could be converted any day, as he had proved with Tasha. It really wasn’t that hard. The hard part was pulling away again once encroached in the web of Dark Phoenix.
He turned at the sight of motion in the corner of his eye as D’rorah stood and nodded in agreement. The Astronomy Tower would be the easiest way to get back in without raising alarms. He hesitated slightly at D’rorah’s suggestion of him going ahead, unwilling to leave either of them out here, but had to acknowledge that it was the best proposal. [blue]”Very well,”[/blue] he replied grudgingly. [blue]”I shall wait in the stairs of the Tower,”[/blue] he added quietly before transforming and, with one glance back, flying up towards the tower they had left before. Once there, he listened to make sure there was no one else there and transformed back, opening the door to the steps and pulling it quietly shut again once inside, transforming again to his animagus form. Best that he still not be seen out of his dormitory, whether with or without Mami and D’rorah.

D'rorah could tell from Kerridon's reaction that he wasn't thrilled with the idea of leaving her and Mami behind by themselves. But quickly enough, he agreed to the suggestion. It was fortunate he governed himself so solidly by logic. She tried to imagine this rescue attempt having been made with any of the other Lightfighters and had the feeling it would have been much more complicated. It was nearly a relief to have another who considered the options before them and did what was best for the operation overall, rather than insisting on staying with them. Now, if anything happened, Kerridon would not be a part of it and he would be able to warn the others to see that action was taken quickly, rather than waiting for the discovery that they were missing.
As he left, she looked down at Mami, trying to think of how best to go about taking her back to the castle. By herself, D'rorah would have simply flown... but then that left the troublesome matter of transporting Mami along with her. She wasn't keen on the idea of Shadow possession once again... it had been hard enough to force herself back to humanity this time around. So, faced with a myriad of options, she improvised.
Carefully, she transfigured Mami to something smallish, but still weighty enough not to be easily broken or blown away by a gust of wind. The first idea that fully solidified in her mind was of a small mouse. Well, it would have to do. Transfiguring the girl once again, D'rorah placed her on her back, and secured her with a small piece of ribbon before changing into her own animagus form and taking off for the top of the tower. Once inside, noted that the door was open. Quietly, she changed herself and Mami back to human forms, checking once again for any new injuries that might have happened on the flight over.
It seemed luck was shining upon them for the moment. The girl seemed no more harmed than she had been before having left the Shadow Realm. And so, lifting her carefully into her arms, D'rorah opened the door to the Astronomy Tower stairs and looked for Kerridon. Noting the moth hovering nearby, she nodded and began to make her way down the stairs with Mami cradled safely in her arms. Two people would return home safely tonight, and that was certainly a nice change from the way things had been running of late. Setting off in the direction of the room of requirements, she hoped no one would be out and about this late. Typically, even the most boisterous of the rabble rousers would have long been in their beds by now; and so, there was a good chance that this would go off completely without a hitch.
Making it to the sixth floor without incident, D'rorah quickly paced the required three times before the entrance to the Room of Requirement. Without pausing, she pulled the door that appeared open and waited until all three of them were inside before closing it securely. Leading the way to an empty part of the room, she was gratified so see that the room had already provided a small bed with clean linens for the injured girl, along with a comfortable chair nearby for her caretaker. Gently, she set Mami down upon the bed and turned to regard Kerridon. "[blue]What is your plan from this point forward?[/blue]"

As Kerridon waited in the tower stairway, he suppressed the urge to go out again and watch eagle-eyed as the other two Ravenclaws made their way up towards him. He might know and understand what was detrimental to the task, but that didn’t really help at all with getting rid of those wants... he just had to ignore them. Soon enough though, they emerged through the doorway and his eyes quickly sought out the transfigured form of Mami on D’rorah’s back. Again he resisted a temptation of transfiguring back himself so he could speak, but knew it was both unnecessary and overly risky.
He followed silently through the castle, keeping to the shadows to avoid notice if someone did happen to be up this late. A teacher who thought the moth fluttering inside Hogwarts wanted to be outside again, or a student scared of insects with the idea that ‘incendio’ would be a great method of destruction, would both be particularly bad for him getting to the Room of Requirement – where he assumed they were going – in good time.
His precautions were apparently not needed though, as they reached the floor holding the Room of Requirement without encountering anyone else. As soon as he was inside and the door had swung shut Kerridon returned to his human form just as D’rorah asked her question.
The situation reminded him of when he had been “rescued” from torture in the Shadow Realm – on that occasion he, too, had been brought to this place for healing, except he had faced further threats of mental torture from Keaira. To think he was now an “ally” to that girl... Her actions would not be replicated this time. Oddly enough, it had been on one of his private escapes from this room while he was healing that he had first met Mami.
[blue]”She needs to stay here a while to be healed... and she will need a reason for her absence before returning to normal Hogwarts life,”[/blue] he pondered aloud. [blue]”Are any of the lightfighters particularly proficient in healing?”[/blue] he asked. While he was wary to bring anyone else into this, Mami would need all the help she could get.

"[blue]D'rorah looked at Mami appraisingly as Kerridon spoke. Well, it appears we shall have time to come up with a reason for her return. [/blue]" She thought for a moment about anyone who might be a good healer. Kat wanted to grow up to be a healer, but that wouldn't help in the present moment. Keaira was adept with potions, but she wasn't entirely certain it would be a sound idea to ask her to work this closely with Kerridon. A healer would certainly be hard to come by among the Lightfighters. "[blue]I can only recommend that Professor O'neill may know of some way to help. I do have some knowledge of healing myself and am willing to assist wherever I am able.[/blue]"
She took a deep breath as she tried to think. Finding a healer was a very difficult prospect... especially finding one who could be trusted. "[blue]Let us do what we can for now,[/blue]" she added, knowing that a start would be better than nothing at all. At the very least, they could do their best and would have to leave the parts that were beyond the capabilities available to them either for a better healer or for natural healing.

Kerridon pondered as D'rorah spoke about what kind of reason Mami could give for her absence. She would need to explain it to Caira - a fact he was not too thrilled about really. If the headmistress decided to start grilling her it would need to be a story that was both feasible and simple, to prevent it falling apart at the first amount of pressure. It would be easier if he himself could explain to Caira why she had been away, rather than letting Mami do it alone. Unfortunately, she would have to do so. Either himself or D'rorah accompanying her to explain her reasons for leaving was obviously impossible.
The only ideas he could come up with right now were either that she had been away from school for some home-schooling, or she had possibly gotten homesickness. Hogwarts was a long way from her home, after all. He would need to find out how she had gotten captured to start with... if she had been visiting home anyway that would make it a lot easier to make the reason believable. Of course, Caira would know that it wasn't the truth, but if it didn't seem implausible to anyone else then she would not be able to pursue it as easily.
The hardest part of this he could see would be that she would surely be keeping an eye on the girl to see who she was spending time with, as a guess of who had rescued her. He would have to stay away in public for quite some time to prevent any suspicion. Maybe the best explanation would be a semblance of the truth - that she was out of school and lost her memory, and ended up awakening back in the school having been healed of injuries. Who knew what memories she would have anyway - it was amazing what the mind could block out if it wanted to. He would just have to warn her about veritaserum and put some mental barriers up to protect her memories from invasion... perhaps it might be best if D'rorah did that, since she seemed so knowledgable about it. The majority of his research had been on breaking down such barriers, not creating them.
[blue]"Would you be able to put up some barriers in her mind to prevent any intrusions that might give away our identities?"[/blue] he asked. Another thought came to him about not being able to see Mami as much - now he really had no excuse to stay near her. She wouldn't even want to be near him now she knew he was involved in all of this... she had already been caused so much pain, it would be far safer to just protect her from a distance and not get her involved.
[blue]"Professor O'Neill... how trustworthy is she? She hasn't been at the school for that long,"[/blue] he inquired, cautious as ever. Sure, he hadn't been at the school for too long either, but D'rorah had seen into his mind. He didn't want to let any loose ends into this thing. Everything had to be tidy.
[blue]"Very well,"[/blue] he replied, not using his wand again. The great advantage of wandless magic was that it couldn't be traced back to you very easily at all. Wands - there was just that quick spell. Hands were not quite so simple to discern the history of. He started on some large gashes on her arm, cleaning them to start before inching them closed a little. He didn't have the skill to knit her skin back together, so for now just transfigured a spare blanket under the bed into bandages and wrapped it gently around her arm. The blood began to come through at once, although after the first patches of red it didn't proceed quite so fast. She really had lost a lot of blood, and still was. Glancing around, Kerridon looked for a blood-replenishing potion. This was the Room of Requirement, summoned to help a girl rest and recuperate from injuries. There must be one somewhere!

Mami was starting to pull away from her unconscious state and moaned in pain as it slowly filtered through her and was finally recognized. It hurts... A finger twitched, she was getting closer to the surface, someplace she really shouldn't be at this point. Unconscious her body was keeping her from shock but that wouldn't last at this rate. Why won't they let me die? Why do they keep me alive? Please make it stop? A small sob came from her lips as she was on the verge of waking.

D'rorah's attention was pulled to Mami from Kerridon as a small sob issued from the girl's lips. Her talent was with mental magic... surely she could use that to her advantage now. If not, what was the benefit of being a telepath at all? She understood Kerridon's concern about not bringing anyone into the situation who wasn't absolutely necessary. The more people who were involved, the more difficult it would be to assure the safety of them all... and the more complicated the entire situation would rapidly become. [blue]"Perhaps it is best not to involve Professor O'Neill at this juncture,"[/blue] she admitted quietly.
She pursed her lips, carefully attending to the girl's wounds where she could, assisting with wrapping bandages. However, she knew Mami's pain would need to be dealt with... if not controlled, she could go into shock and then outside intervention would be necessary. [blue]"Give me a moment,"[/blue] she whispered quietly, her voice as soothing as possible to the slowly waking girl and hopefully reassuring to Kerridon.
She placed a hand at Mami's forehead, hoping the cold touch wouldn't jar her too much. It would make everything easier to maintain some sort of physical contact for the work she was about to do. Carefully, slowly, D'rorah worked her way into Mami's mind. It was hard to navigate through so much pain and anguish, but she was determined. She had a duty to protect this girl, both as a Lightfighter and in a lesser way as a Hogwarts prefect. She sought out the most violently affected centers of pain within Mami's brain and began slowly building barriers against the sensations. It was careful, delicate work that required her full attention. D'rorah had seen the effects of poor mental manipulation done by others and knew it required concentration and knowledge of what one was doing to avoid disaster. And so, she worked without concern for time or her own exhaustion. Her only thought was to ease Mami's pain. Deftly, she navigated her way through a tangle of neurons and chemical-electrical impulses, memories and involuntary reactions. She stimulated the body's own healing reactions, knowing that they could use every bit of help they could find to restore Mami to full health.
Finally, feeling as though she had managed to alleviate a great deal of the girl's pain, D'rorah carefully withdrew from her mind and removed her hand from her forehead. [blue]"She will heal more quickly if she is not also fighting pain constantly,"[/blue] she remarked, her exhaustion apparent in her voice. Such intricate work was draining on one's mental energy. She bowed her head for a moment, gathering the energy to stand up and move aside so that Kerridon could continue his healing. "[blue]She needs a blood replenisher, there should be one in the pantry on the other side of the room, along with other supplies.[/blue]" She pinched her eyes shut and took a deep breath before moving aside, taking up position in a wingback chair in the corner. It had been an exhausting night... and thoughts of seeing Dylan again would have to wait until the morning, when she felt slightly less like a spectre.

The moment he heard Mami’s moan, Kerridon swivelled back round from his visual search for the potion and twitched as she let out another sob. He hated to see her like this, hated that he was a part of this. He didn’t know why she had been taken by Dark Phoenix, but that didn’t matter right now. He was affiliated with the Mage, and he had done things like this to people in the past. He never thought of the consequences, just did as he was ordered and observed with a scientific, logical eye that took note of any oddities and mentally jotted them down for further investigation.
He hadn’t cared who the victim was, had never looked into their past or potential future. Never knew if they had friends or family – unless those friends or family were also being tortured, but even then he knew nothing of the relationship between them. Any of them could have been Mami, if she’d been caught a little bit earlier. He usually ignored their screams unless there were any words in there – confessions of knowledge, any other useful titbits. He had a sudden flashback to one Japanese girl he’d been torturing once upon a time. Not on anyone’s orders, not coerced into doing it. Just because he wanted to test the effects of a new, painful spell he was developing. She was around Mami’s age, perhaps a little older, but had looked very similar now he thought about it. Slim; tanned skin; short, dark hair; bruises and blood all over her by the time he had finished. It had been most unsatisfactory, if he remembered rightly – the effects he had wanted had not been produced. In his frustration, he had attacked her with other spells he knew, trying to mould them to get a similar reaction to what he had intended. He remembered that she had given words to her screams – mostly ‘why’. At the time he hadn’t really understood the question. Why not, after all? She was there, she was going to be tortured anyway. It was convenient. Now, it was far too obvious why not.
The tiniest of winces passed his face as he thought of doing it again, which he likely would have to in keeping up his cover to Dark Phoenix. At least at Hogwarts he wasn’t under her constant personal supervision, and although there were probably reports on him going back to her he wasn’t expected to be doing much torture while here. He was blending in, gaining information.
He nodded curtly, knocked out of his reverie by her words about Professor O’Neill. The less people involved, the better... although what if the professor could help heal Mami in ways that neither of them could? He waited, tense, as D’rorah delved into Mami’s mind in an attempt to calm her – apparently it worked because he could see the pain-tensed muscles relax a little. Kerridon went as instructed to the pantry, and as well as a blood replenisher also picked up an energy replenishing potion for D’rorah and some other supplies such as more bandages. She looked as if she would need it. Heading back to the pair on the other side of the room, he handed the second potion straight to the Ravenclaw prefect and knelt to put the blood replenisher potion to Mami’s lips, dripping it through her lips slowly. [blue]”You should rest,”[/blue] he informed D’rorah as he did that, not taking his eyes off Mami. Once that was done, he set to work again on what was left of her injuries. He was nearly done when he began to feel drained of energy just like D’rorah had appeared earlier and paused in his work. He didn’t want to make any mistakes with this.
((Sorry the end’s not too good... my brain kinda switched off halfway through))

D'rorah looked up as the restorative draught was passed her way. [blue]"Thank you,"[/blue] she replied simply, her nose wrinkling slightly at the thought of the potion. She never had liked taking potions all that much... but she could not argue against needing one at the moment. [blue]"Likely I should,"[/blue] she replied to his admonishment to rest, [blue]"but you and I both know that I likely will not."[/blue] She smirked slightly as she uncorked the phial and pressed it to her lips. It was possible to feel at least a small amount of levity now that she knew Dylan was back and was safe. Mami, for all of her injuries and the long recovery ahead of her, was at least out of danger of dying as far as she could tell.
She let the potion work its magic as she surveyed Kerridon's work, her eyes slipping slightly closed despite her intention to remain wide awake. She sensed the pause in her light state of half-sleep and her eyes popped open as she straightened in the wingback chair. Her lips were pursed slightly in annoyance with herself, but she did feel much improved by the combination of potion and brief sleep.
She rose from her chair carefully and made her way over to the cabinet, extracting another phial of restorative draught for Kerridon. [blue]"Perhaps, Mister Paradox, I am not the only one who should rest,"[/blue] she admonished gently as she pressed the phial into his hand. Her eyebrow was arched slightly as she surveyed Mami. [blue]"Excellent work."[/blue] Of course, she had expected nothing less than excellent work from him; he seemed to have perfectionistic tendencies similar to her own.
[blue]"A rest. A meal. We should begin again in the morning. It would be unwise to overwhelm her body by attempting to do so much healing all at once."[/blue] And, as though the room had known it would be necessary, there were sandwiches and hot tea waiting for them on a trolley that D'rorah had not noticed before. She handed one sandwich to Kerridon and poured a cup of tea for each of them, taking a sandwich for herself as well. She found she couldn't recall the last time she'd really stopped for a meal and was famished. As an afterthought, D'rorah set the sandwich aside and placed a hand on Mami's forehead once again, working her way into the girl's brain just long enough to initiate a series of theta waves and deep slumber. She pulled her hand back when she was finished and retrieved her sandwich. [blue]"She should rest as well,"[/blue] she remarked quietly, her eyes cast regretfully upon Mami's slumbering figure. They simply had to get better at protecting the students here... allowing things like this to happen was unacceptable to her.

Kerridon nodded in acknowledgement of D’rorah’s thanks but other than that paid little attention to her, concentrating instead on healing Mami. A tiny smirk graced his lips when she made the comment about how she would probably not sleep, but his face was already turned towards the younger Ravenclaw lying injured on the bed, so she wouldn’t have been able to see it.
When he paused, he still did not pay attention to D’rorah when he felt her moving behind him. He wasn’t sure how long he had been working, but he was definitely getting quite near to exhaustion now. Not that that was an acceptable excuse to stop working – Mami’s needs were quite plainly more important than his right now. He felt a small bottle being pressed into his hand and glanced up at D’rorah as she spoke. Rest would be nice right now, but he didn’t want to leave Mami in pain… he wanted to help her recover as much as he possibly could. But then… if he allowed himself to work through exhaustion, mistakes could be made. He had learnt that many times in the past.
Glancing back at Mami when D’rorah expressed her approval, Kerridon had to admit that the girl looked a lot more comfortable now than she had an hour or so ago. Still, there were several minor injuries that still needed healing, and a few intermediate ones. Perhaps a short rest might be a good idea, so he could heal her more effectively with his energy increased. He swallowed the potion, wincing a little at the taste, and slowly stood. Sitting in a nearby chair he hadn’t noticed before, he ate the sandwich he had accepted from D’rorah a moment ago and tried to prevent the potion taking too much hold so that he wouldn’t fall asleep.
He watched, not moving, as D’rorah placed a hand on Mami’s forehead, guessing that she was doing as she had before. When she took her hand back, he could see that Mami was actually sleeping rather than in a hazy unconsciousness. [blue]”Very well,”[/blue] he replied quietly, not wanting to interrupt what was apparently a peaceful sleep with discomfort from healing spells. He knew that the human body could heal itself very well with a little sleep. He settled further back in the chair, very obviously not intending to move, but as much as he tried he could not keep his eyes open. Normally it would not be a problem, but the restorative draught had been quite strong and was now affecting him. It very much wanted him to sleep, and after a short while he was indeed dozing, with his subconscious still alert for any sign of movement from Mami.

D'rorah felt somewhat gratified to see both Mami and Kerridon sleeping. She knew Kerridon would likely be spending the next several days at her side. For some reason it seemed he was personally invested in her recovery. She settled back into her own seat, finding that she could not deny her eyes from drifting closed. They opened some time later of their own accord. She scanned the room without moving, looking to see what might have woken her. It appeared that Mami and Kerridon were both still asleep. Her eyes moved to the clock on the wall and she saw that it was already a few hours later. It was then that the realization dawned on her that she had much to look forward to today. Dylan had returned and she had every intention of seeing him as soon as she could possibly manage. With that thought in mind, she rose from her chair, doing her best to make as little noise as possible so she would not wake Kerridon or Mami. Mami would likely sleep for several more hours. D'rorah could sense that her slumber was peaceful from where she was. Quietly, she made her way over to the sleeping girl once more and lightly placed a hand at her forehead, renewing the efforts she had made earlier and easing away her pain. It would make her waking up much more pleasant. She turned to leave, thinking she would have time to freshen up and be in the common room whenever Dylan would awake in the morning. That would be a pleasant end to a perilous and nerve-wracking night. Though it had been her intention to leave Kerridon sleeping, she saw that he was awake. (ooc: I'm assuming he would have woken up the minute she moved towards Mami, but if not, let me know and I'll mod) [blue]"She will sleep a few more hours yet,"[/blue] she whispered, her voice low in the early morning pre-dawn. [blue]"I have modulated her pain sensors once again so she should have minimal discomfort when she awakes. However, if you do not mind, I should very much like to visit Mister Cooper this morning."[/blue] She offered a genuine smile that was also meant to be reassuring. [blue]"Her recovery may be slow, but she is out of danger now. With time, she will be fine."[/blue] She paused for a moment to see if he had anything to add before turning to leave. (ooc: I know this thread is old and we've already played out several weeks after this point, so feel free to either post again or we can simply end it here. It's up to you. Since we're so far past it in other threads, I figured it was probably time to go ahead and bring this one to a close.)

When Kerridon felt the movement as D’rorah moved towards Mami, his eyes immediately snapped open. He hadn’t meant to fall asleep, but at least he hadn’t been so out of it that he hadn’t noticed the movement. His body stiffened momentarily before he realised it was just D’rorah leaning over the younger Ravenclaw. He wasn’t sure how long he had slept, but now the movement had arisen him he was wide awake.
He listened to what she was saying without moving, nodding to show he understood. [blue]”Thank you,”[/blue] he told her, the genuineness easy to hear in his voice. [blue]”Yes, you should go see Mister Cooper,”[/blue] he agreed, giving her a small smile back before she left.
Shifting his chair slightly, Kerridon turned to watch Mami once again. He would have to work out what to tell her once she was awake… and work out a way for her to blend in again with Hogwarts. For now though, it should be best to concentrate on her recovery. Standing, he started again with spellwork to heal the last of the minor injuries left on her.
