It was a warm day for this late in the year, sunny and clear. Many students it seemed enjoyed lying or sitting under one of the many trees that grew near the shore of the lake, escaping the sun's heat and just relaxing. Any who tried to claim the spot under the lovely silver birch would find a neatly folded dark green button down shirt lying in the grass at its base, piled high with various wrist accouterments, a few necklaces, and a wand. The owner of this little treasure trove could be found splashing about in the shallows just off shore, apparently having a grand old time in his pale gray swim trunks.
He didn't seem to have much interest in going out farther than about twenty feet from shore. Indeed Zee had heard about the merfolk, grindylows, and the giant squid. He wasn't terribly worried or he wouldn't have been in the lake at all, but he did hold a healthy respect for what could happen to him if he grew too careless.
Apparently "too careless" was a line he had already crossed, as with a yelp of surprise he was suddenly dragged below the surface. Trying to keep his head despite losing most of his air in that cry of distress, he recognized the grindylow that even then was slipping its claws around his throat. Zee likely would have panicked and met his end had he not known that he was far from helpless. A confident, malicious grin came upon his face as he pointed one finger at the wicked creature.
"Crucio!"
The evil glee in the grindylow's eyes vanished as it let out a horrid, gurgling scream. It immediately released its would be victim and swam away as best it could, twitching in agony. Zee broke the surface and gulped in breath after breath, swimming hard for the shore.
Standing in the knee deep water, he shook the sopping hair out of his face and looked around, wondering if anyone had noticed anything. He wasn't worried much. He was sure the water had muffled his curse sufficiently that no one would have understood what had happened.

Wysteria liked being around the lake to study. The water had a calming effect and seemed a world away from the normal hustle and bustle of castle life. She hadn't used the library much recently, finding that far too often she would find Drorah in there, and they would inevitable get into conversations that might reveal too much to bystanders. It was just best to avoid the area sometimes. Her heavy brown book bag was full of texts, parchment...and whatever else she had decided to put in it. The result was a strap that dug into her shoulder a bit more than she would have liked...but Wyst wanted to have everything she might need on hand.
As she walked toward the water, she saw movement just beneath the surface, a small rippling on the glassy surface disturbing its placidity. Walking closer, Wyst found the reason for the disturbance to be none other than Zee. Smirking to herself, she supposed that he would be the one trying to mess up what was supposed to be an afternoon of quiet study.
Raising an eyebrow, she called out to him from the shore, "Did you see something you liked on the bottom, or do you just like sticking your head in the water for no reason?" She smirked, folding her arms and awaiting a response.

The air was unusually crisp, and Ally gave a small smile as the taste of it touched against her tongue. Today was a clear, warm day: only a few scattered fluffy white clouds and the sun floated dreamily in the brilliant blue sky. The pleasantness of the afternoon was the main inspiration for her expedition from her usual abode in the foyer for some field studies on a rather unusual type of Bowtruckle that assumedly lived only in birch trees.
Accompanying Alexis on her small trip was a heavy book slung under one of her slender arms, and the destination was that charming birch tree near the lake. Treading carefully across the colourful autumn leaves strewn across the grass, Ally slowly approached the old grey birch, only then noticing a random assortment of clothing dumped at the base.
An amused grin passed over her face as she drew closer, but she also felt instantly curious, and began turning her head around wildly in order to find the owner. It was then she first spotted an older girl calling something out to a strange boy floundering about in the lake.
Pausing for only an instant, she briskly made her way over to the girl, making eye contact with her as she came. “Excuse me, but do you know who owns the clothes under the tree overaway?” Ally called amicably as she approached.

Water dripping from his chin, his nose, and copiously from his hair, Zee smirked and waded to shore, putting on a mockingly indignant expression as he came within a few feet of Wyst. He planted his hands on his hips and threw back his head, spraying her with lake water as his hair flew back over his head.
"For no reason!? I'll have you know I was just attacked by a grindylow!"
His manner while he made the claim made it difficult to tell whether he was serious or not. His typical amused grin, as if he were in on a joke that no one else was privy to, returned as the second, very petite girl walked up. She looked young, though certainly no first year. Zee cleared his throat conspicuously.
"Those would be mine. I don't like to get my adornments wet. Wouldn't be good for the leather or metal, and the cloth would likely fade. Perhaps I'm showing too much concern over mere trinkets, but it seems a waste to not preserve them while I can. Besides, they weigh down my arms too much. I'm just too weak to swim with them."
His mischievous grin showed he didn't believe that last statement. In truth he was not impressively muscular, nor overly toned. He was far from skin and bone though and looked quite healthy. He swung his hair down over his face and then back up, spraying both girls for good measure. He chuckled to himself as he stood there, up to his ankles in the murky water.
"I suppose for the sake of modesty I should retrieve my shirt? I would hate for any to get the impression that I was arrogant."
With this he tossed Wysteria a slightly exaggerated wink.

Caity had decided to take her studies outside for once. Recently she had vowed not to come outside more often than was necessary, due to the cold and her excursion into the forbideen forest a few nights ago, but seeing as it was such a nice day... By Scottish standards, anyway. It still seemed fairly chilly compared to India, although she was finally growing re-acclimatised to British weather. She was going to grab hold of as much time in the sun as she could.
Her bag, although only holding what she deemed necessary objects for doing her hoework, was digging into her shoulder mercilessly and rather painfully. Perhaps I should have gotten myself a rucksack instead, she thought to herself.
She headed for one of the many trees beside the lake, ignoring the pockets of chatter as she passed them. However, there was one pocket of chatter she found it rather difficult to ignore, when water splashed all over her.
"Hey!" she growled, turning and expecting to see some careless 1st years; maybe even Quin. Instead, there were two other dripping girls - one she recognised as a fellow Hufflepuff yearmate, but the other she didn't know. Swimming in the lake, Caitlin saw the Slytherin, also in her year, who'd joined their little group in the forest the other night.
"What was that for?" she demanded. People seemed to like gettin her wet; Myrtle, Quin (more than once, although she had returned part of the favour) and now the Slytherin.

An exasperated scowl passed over her little face as the cold water splashed over her, though her hands covered this quite successfully - she'd never found such "pranks" amusing. Her sentiments on the matter seemed to be shared by a frustrated female student who had been caught in the crossfire and was now glaring furiously at the boy. Her main focus, however, was the vague little explanation he had provided earlier. [glow=green,2,300]"For no reason!? I'll have you know I was just attacked by a grindylow!"[/glow] Now, that was something worthy of her enthralment. There were an endless supply of books concerned aquatic life in the Great Lake, but precious few areas to get the first hand experience: but here, standing directly in front of her, was a fantastic example of a primary source. Brilliant! Having ignored his tirade about clothing preservation of all things, her interest was plastered conspicuously all over her face. Lowering her hands from her face and quickly rearranging her spectacles with her left hand, Ally was just about to form a question on the matter when his next merry little comment slid over her. [glow=green,2,300]"I suppose for the sake of modesty I should retrieve my shirt? I would hate for any to get the impression that I was arrogant."[/glow] She glanced up again. “Oh, wait!” she cried, the dramatics in her voice slightly overdone. It was for a good cause, however: she really found the humungous lake and its inhabitants to be nothing short of fascinating. “I – I actually have to do an…” – a slight pause here to think of a lie that would be somewhat convincing: her conscience twinged slightly, and she had to force herself to ignore it - “a - an essay on aquatic life forms for Care of Magical Creatures. It’d be tremendously helpful if you’d help me out.” Without waiting for a response, Ally rushed on impulsively: “Nothing much, of course! Just a question or two. What did the fingers feel like? How long were you in its grasp? Was it powerful in its strength? And, finally, how did you escape?” The assorted questions fell from her mouth in a style that was simply too hurried and clumsy, though she didn’t seem to notice. Instead, she felt quite breathless as she stared at him, totally transfixed, her pale blue eyes piercing his brown.

Kylo, who had been walking around the lake, looking for his jacket, which, of course, he had misplaced, thought he saw it ahead of him. It was in a tree, near some kids, who were playing in the water. He jogged ahead, and then stood under the tree, looking at it half-heartedly. It was very high up, and he probably couldn't reach it. Just for the sake of it, he jumped, just brushing it, and enjoyed a slight feeling of free fall- before he smacked into a branch, lost his balence, rolled a few fet, staggered up, and tripped over a root. He cannoned off of it, and slammed into a girl who was standing near the water. For a brief second, he reconized her as the girl who had helped him at the Whomping Williw..Caitlin, wasn't it? Then he pushed the two of them forward, him being fully clothed, and he thought he saw something on her shoulder, but he wasn't sure, into the water, letting out a quiet italian swear.
Spluttering, he came for air, his face bright red. Was it him? Or did most people have the abilty to trip over something and land on someone? Soaking wet, he shook his head in a dog like fasion, and looked around, searching for the girl he had pushed. "Caitlin! I am so, so sorry! I didn't mean to..I tripped! Are you okay? I'm really sorry!" His mind, disorented by the tumbling, spluttered out applogies like he had the water, his face shocked.

Caity listened with growing amusement at the girl's apparent enthusiasm to give the Slytherin an in-depth interview of his experiences in the lake, cheering herself up slightly. At least it was a warm day for once, so she would dry quickly. Or she could even dry herself.
"Tergeo," she muttered, pooling the water onto the grass a few metres away. Alessandro's spell sure was coming in handy.
Hearing a noise behind her, she turned in time to see a boy hurtling towards her. Just before Caitlin hit the water she realised she was going to get soaked - again. Damn these clumsy people! Couldn't they leave her dry for one minute?
She emerged spluttering to see Kylo Riddle, the Hufflepuff she'd taken to the Hospital Wing the other day, apologising profusely. Apparently he'd tripped.
"It's ok," she sighed, already resigned to her fate of getting a cold. "I'm fine."
Standing up, she brushed her dripping hair out of her eyes and held out a hand to pull Kylo up. She looked around to see if the others were still there and what they'd made of the impromptu dunking.

Wysteria rolled her eyes at Zee's comment about not wanting someone to think he was arrogant. Somehow things were different in the bright daylight; his cocky ways were a bit less amusing and more annoying. It was almost as if he felt the need to conctantly reassert that everything was within his comfort zone and under his control. That irked her a bit. But the new girl seemed extremely eager to learn about the creatures that lurked beneath the surface...Wyst would have guessed Ravenclaw if she hadn't already seen her house colors.
"I think clothes are generally a good option when in the presense of the opposite sex," she said, raising her eyebrow for a moment. She was getting ready to turn to the Rvenclaw girl and ask for her name, but an instant later, she saw a new girl approach the lake only to be taken down by Kylo...and both of them falling in the lake and getting soaked. She wasn't quite sure of the nature of the push, whether a practical joke or otherwise, but she soon got her answer as Kylo explained having "tripped" on the girl. Wysteria suppressed a giggle as she wondered how much of an accident it really was.
Looking over at the now soaking wet girl and Kylo, she wondered how the awkward tension was going to break from this moment. This was shaping up to be an odd afternoon.
"Are you two alright?" she asked from her spot by the shore, "do you need a drying spell or...or something?" Wysteria gave a small shrug, unsure if the girl was too embarassed from her fall to want to talk to anyone.

Zee had a problem. A minor problem perhaps, but a problem. In his own arrogant way, and for his own selfish ends, he was a people pleaser. It was important that people thought good things when they thought of him. And here was one young Ravenclaw wanting him to remain where he was and answer her questions, of which he had no doubt she had many more to ask. But Wyst, in her own slightly irritable way, had expressed a desire for him to put his shirt back on, which would mean heading over the twenty feet or so to wear it lay folded beneath the silver birch. He was torn as to which path to follow. Until his arrogance kicked in.
He was fair certain Wyst didn't actually want his shirt to be put back on. Perhaps part of her did. A large part considering how reserved she often seemed. But it wasn't difficult for Zee to convince himself that a part of her liked the image of him standing there in just his shorts, water dripping from his torso. Putting on a fairly innocent smile, he shrugged helplessly at the prefect and turned to the inquisitive Ravenclaw.
"Well they felt like skeletal hands really. Grindylows have long, thin fingers that have almost no meat on them. They aren't very big, though their hands are, well, about the size of mine, except much thinner. They're much stronger than they look though. Wrapped it's fingers around my neck and squeezed just enough to close off my airway. Of course since I was underwater anyway, that didn't matter much. It only had a hold for a couple seconds. Surprised me. I didn't know they came that close to shore."
He looked out to where the grindylow had grabbed him. It really hadn't been that far out. The water was probably only ten feet deep there. It was an ambitious little demon. It probably wouldn't be so quick to attack another student.
"Get free? It was pretty simple. Grindylows have gills so they can breath underwater, but if you get a good hold on its throat and cover those gills and squeeze, then it can't breathe either. That scares them I guess. I dunno really, that's what I did and it let go."
He shrugged, giving absolutely no indication that what he'd said was anything but the truth. Zee was an amazing liar. He had to be. He really saw no other options. He glanced at the soaked pair as he ruffled his hair with one hand, trying to get it to dry. The girl, he'd met her before. Caitlin. It was funny how she had inadvertently walked into the spray of water he'd launched from his hair and so soon after been knocked clear into the lake. She seemed unlucky. Out of the corner of his eye, he watched Wysteria, wondering if she was merely acting less friendly because of the other students around.

Caity waded out of the lake, shivering from the cold.
"No, it's ok," she replied to her yearmate. "Alessandro Darko showed me one when we got soaked a few days ago. I didn't realise how useful it was going to be." She muttered the last comment half to herself. She was blushing slightly, but was pleasantly surprised to find that she wasn't as embarassed as she usually would be in such circumstances. That was a nice change.
"Tergeo," she repeated for the second time in five minutes, flooding the grass in the same place as she had before. Turning to ask if Kylo wanted her to perform the same spell on him, she glared at Zee when she saw his amused expression. It probably was funny as a viewing spectacle, but couldn't he at least pretend to be concerned? She'd just been pushed into the lake! It seemed water just liked being around her.

Kylo blushed at the older Hufflepuff's offer, and looked at the water. He was soaked through his shirt and and pants, which were about to fall off. He hitched them up, and gratefully took Caitlins offer. He wasn't good with cleaning like spells, he had once burnt a sock to crisp. Thanking the older Hufflepuff, he stepped out of the water, taking off his shues. The water did look tempting, but he was shivering slightly. He shook his hair like a dog, and felt a tad warmer.
"Thank you," He said, then picked up his jacket, which had fallen from the tree. Noticing that Caitlin was shivering, he offered her the coat. "Are you cold?" He asked, concerned. Turning to see who she was glaring at, he saw a boy, Slytherin by the looks of it, with an amused expression. His eye brows tightened, but he didn't let any thing else show.

Alexis had been awaiting Zane’s response eagerly, completely ignoring the pileup which had occurred behind her. It seemed like people were constantly falling over at Hogwarts: it was odd, yet slightly amusing.
When he started to speak, she listened carefully, totally capitivated. Nodding keenly throughout his whole explanation, a wide grin spread across her face. For the most part his answer was both richly informative and intriguing, and as he glanced over his shoulder her smile stretched from ear to ear.
“Oh, fabulous!” Ally interjected as he finished, clasping her hands together merrily. “You covered its gills? How clev--”
She paused, her eyes straying downwards in thought, the smile slipping from her pale face. After a short moment, she quickly looked up again. “You seem awfully calm for someone who almost got throttled,” she murmured softly, her brow furrowed slightly. “I don’t mean to pry, but how did you stay so composed? You didn’t even have a wand handy, yet you were able to both identify and defeat a grindylow: which is, by all accounts, a particularily strong aquatic animal.” Narrowing her eyes slightly, Alexis questioned; “What’s your name?”

Wysteria watched the interaction between the girl and Kylo with curiosity; it was amusing to see how young boys weren't always smooth when they wanted to be. She turned her attention the Ravenclaw's question for Zane, who seemed almost suspicious of his calm nature. Wyst had seen that self assurance before after a dangerous encounter...in herself. Only someone who was used to defending their life or inflicting harm on other things could brush it off so easily. She looked from her to Zane in turn, wondering how he would repond.
As she gave him a moment to consider her words, she looked over to the new girl with Kylo and decided to take some attention off Zee...he seemed to enjoy it a bit too much.
"Hey, you're a Hufflepuff right? What's you're name?" she called out to the now dry girl on the shore.

Zee's amused grin widened at the young girl's skepticism. He raised two fingers and tapped then against his head in a casual salute as he answered her final question.
"Zane Lucifer Bishop, but you can call me Zee. Actually there are any number of things you could call me. Personally I recommend Zee. It's short, easy to remember, other people will know who you mean, and I'll respond to it. Probably."
Though he only continued to grin, his eyes were clearly laughing. He again tousled his own hair to dry it faster and shook his head, shrugging as he glanced over his shoulder at the spot where he'd been attacked.
"It's of little concern to me whether you believe me or not, but if you ever meet a grindylow, you may learn they really aren't the terrifying beasts they're made out to be. They only attack when they think they can surprise you and if you fight back with any efficiency, they'll probably run for it. Or swim for it. Cowardly things."
In truth Zee didn't know if trying to choke a grindylow would work very well or not. It made sense to him, but he had to offer some explanation other than he'd cast an unforgivable curse at it without a wand. Catching Caity's glare out of the corner of his eye, he turned to her, his amused grin dying. His eyes drooped slightly as his mouth twisted into an apologetic grimace. His voice sounded truly ashamed.
"I'm sorry Caity. I thought . . . with Wysteria right there to help I didn't think you were really in any trouble. I shouldn't have been so thoughtless. I . . . yeah sorry."
He offered no such apology to Kylo. He'd been the one fool enough to trip into the lake.
