Kailee had spent many hours going over the content for her course this semester. There were so many different subjects to touch on, for the History of Magic was such a vast subject with very few definitions. It had been a tedious project with a few ups and downs, but nothing that she hadn't expected.
She arrived to the classroom early, making sure that things were in order. She had a small bag that she set on the desk at the front of the room. It had been the first time she had stood at the front of the class instead of sitting slumped in one of the seats.
Turning to the board, she wrote very clearly: "History of Magic Lesson 1: An Introduction." It was brief and broad to be sure, but all would be explained in due course. Now, for the students to arrive.

Sefu walked quietly into the room, his odd colored eyes trained on the floor. One eye was a intreging sea green, while the other was soft, almost golden brown. It gave his sollem, sad face a rather child like apperance. He had woken up early, from a nightmare and decided he might as well be early to class, rather then try to fall back into a fitful sleep. Seeing the teacher was also in the room, he walked up to her, face downcast.
"Hodi," He said in Swahili, and he blushed slightly, he had forgotten to speak English. "Erhm.." He had a strong African accent, and tryed to remember the right words to use. "I'm Sefu, I was just making sure.." He hesitated again, before continuing, "This was the first class, I was not here before, so, I did not miss anything, emm..right?" He was better at writing then speaking English, and he wasn't good at combining either, saying could not instead of couldn't.

Dylan tredged down the second floor corridor, his eyes directed toward his feet and strands of brown hair falling before his face in a typical curtain-like effect that was so common with Dylan Cooper. Tracing his way back to the familiar classroom, he entered History of Magic without an upward glance toward the professor or the single student whose legs he could see. He recognised them as belonging to a male, in any case, most likely someone who would not be worth talking to. The only person he could really stand to be around at the moment was D'rorah, in fact, whom he'd rarely seen since their return to Hogwarts and the schooling life.
Slumping into a desk at the very back of the room, he held a small hope that they would not be forced to move around much as they had been in Ancient Runes. While the concept Professor Choi had introduced had been good in itself, her actual seating arrangements for the OWL students had left a lot to desire in his subconscious. His bag was placed unceremoniously onto the floor and his head drooped into his waiting hands, his eyes shutting as he lay against the desk and waited for more students to arrive.

Now this class Jason enjoyed. He enjoyed most of his other classes, but this one was the most familiar. Sitting and learning interesting information without having to then demonstrate magical ability with that information was what Jason had come to expect from school after his muggle upbringing. He was still thrilled by the existence of magic of course, but after three years of learning about it he appreciated that there was still a class that so resembled his old muggle schooling.
Thus he was in good spirits as he trotted down the corridor to the History of Magic classroom. His enthusiasm sobered a bit as he reached the door however, and he peeked in to see what the class was looking like so far. The only student he recognized was Dylan, who was not looking particularly sociable at the moment. Jason frowned, thinking perhaps he should continue walking and make a circuit of the floor before returning to a hopefully more crowded room.
He shook his head at the ridiculous thought though and pushed open the door, smiling at the professor and taking a seat one desk over from and two rows in front of his Ravenclaw friend. He'd learned from the Ancient Runes class that sitting off by yourself and hoping someone would sit next to you didn't work so well, thus his more centrally located placement not far from another student. He felt a little selfish, using Dylan's location that way. He thought about moving closer and trying to talk to the other older boy, but sincerely doubted he'd be able to come up with anything remotely comforting. Dylan looked as though he wanted to be left alone, and so Jason left him alone. He made a mental note however to ask him what was up after class.

Alessandro made his way down the corridor, tucking the last book he had plucked from his dorm into his side bag as he walked. History of Magic was next on the class schedule for the day, just following his Ancient Runes class. His mind lingered on the last class and the personality of the teacher. He was sure to learn volumes from someone as stringent and pragmatic as Professor Choi. He remembered how she was quick to put fellow Ravenclaw, Kerridon Paradox, in his place after answering the transfer students question, which had been directed at the professor, not him.
Well we are know-it-alls...He thought as he somewhat defended Kerridon in his mind. He didn't necessarily think that Professor Choi needed to be as cold as she was, but arched an eyebrow as he thought Hey, whatever gets the job done...
He rounded the corner to find Jason Cruz lingering on at the doorway, seemingly pondering whether he should go in or not. Alessandro quirked his head as he approached, and then Jason finally made his way inside. He wondered about that boy, Jason. A bit skittish, he thought. He made his way up to the doorway and glanced in, noticing a Gryffindor boy he had yet to meet, and Dylan, far in the back, with Jason just joining him. He sent the occupants of the room a general smile and slight wave as he swept into the room, choosing a seat in the front row, middle section.
He set his things down next to his chair, straightening out his robes emblazoned with a bronze eagle against a light blue, pinstriped background. He shook his head to the right, causing his hair to sweep in the same direction, allowing his gray-green eyes to become visible. His hair had gotten quite long since the Sectumsempra incident, but ever since, he had been wearing his hair swept across to the right, to obscure the chunk that was unwillingly cursed off.
Taking his seat, he smiled up at the professor and reached down into his bag for his history book.
"Hello Professor Faye." He said warmly. "How are you doing today?" He asked conversationally, flipping through his book absentmindedly.

Kerridon walked down the corridor with a small frown upon his face, as he thought about the previous afternoon's session in the library. He'd almost given himself away, and that was bad news for him if the Shadow Mage ever found out.
He entered the classroom silently, sitting on his own at the front. He hadn't met any of the students already in there, and didn't really feel like socialising much today. He got out his notes and writing equipment and began jotting down the introduction on the board. History, both muggle and wizarding, had always been one of his favourite subjects, so hopefully this would improve his mood.

Kailee stood just to the side of the board in the front of the classroom, flicking though some notes on the corner of her desk as the first student entered, with a look on his face that explained that his thoughts were far beyond the walls of the classroom. The Gryffindor crest stood out on his robes, but she could not remember meeting him previously. His speech was hesitant and unsure. “Yes Sefu, you’re in the right place. I was just looking over some notes and waiting for the other students, if you’d like to take a seat?”
Her eyes darted to the back of the room where a Ravenclaw student plopped rather unceremoniously into a seat in the back. Jason, a Gryffindor she had already made acquaintance with in the common room entered and managed a smile to the professor, who managed a smile and a nod in response. Another Ravenclaw student entered and seemed to be in better spirits than the first. “I’m well, thank you.” There was a slight pause while she looked over the attendance chart, wondering to whom she was speaking, it would all be answered in due time. Yet another Ravenclaw boy entered the class, choosing a seat near the front of the room. One more student entered; much to her pleasure she noticed that it was a female student and another Ravenclaw... Interesting.
It was an interesting mix of students who had made an appearance and a decidedly all male mix as well. She glanced at the large clock on the wall noticing that the class should have begun three minutes ago. Sighing, she realized that there was no time like the present. For whatever reason, upon accepting the job at Hogwarts Kailee had spent a lot of time wrestling with her persona as a teacher. It was hard to imagine herself as a responsible, stuffy Hogwarts professor and she intended to do her best to not be the latter.
“I suppose we’ll have to see who trickles in?” The statement was made to the room at large. “I’m sure people are adjusting to new schedules and things, not to mention staff changes and the like…” Her voice trailed off and she glanced over her notes again. One more look at the clock and a final glance at the door told her that now was as good a time to start as any. “For those of you I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting, my name is Kailee Faye, or perhaps Professor Faye to you all and I am your new History of Magic Professor and the temporary head of Gryffindor house,” she spoke clearly and calmly, coming around the front of the desk and leaning against it. “I’m looking very much forward to getting to know you all.”
“If themes still stand from my time at Hogwarts, I would venture a guess that there are a handful of you that have the benefit of knowing quite a bit about the history of magic from your families or previous courses and a handful of you that have absolutely no idea what we are getting into,” she crossed her arms over her chest with a sort of cunning smirk on her face.
“This semester, we will be discussing a delving into the History of Magic starting with Ancient Egypt and working our way forward. This will include information about muggle history as it pertains to magical history. My vision is that we are all able to share knowledge with each other and use each other as resources for the interpretation of history is just as important as the history itself.” Her hands couldn’t seem to find a comfortable place as she uncrossed them and set them against the desk as she continued to lean against the edge. “I want this classroom to be a comfortable place for you all to be able to participate in discussion; something that I know can be rather difficult at this stage in your lives.”
“I’d like to begin by getting a handle on what your personal knowledge is of the history of magic. So, who would like to tell me what it is that you know? Or even perhaps, what you would like to know more about?” She used her hands and pushed so that she was now sitting on her desk, probably not the best example for the students, but it was of no matter. She waved her hand in the direction of the board and two headings appeared as she glanced around the room, trying to catch a student’s eye to coax out a response.
After a few moments of silence, she added: "No need to raise hands or anything like that... Just shout out some topic and things," she gestured to the board whose headings read What We Know and What We Want to Learn. "Be sure to tell me which column to put them in."

Alessandro payed attention as Professor Faye began the lesson. It seemed as though they were going to cover one of his favorites subjects throughout the course, no doubt sooner than later, Ancient Egypt. He loved learning about the customs, and the rituals the Ancient Egyptians performed, as well as learning to decipher Heiroglyphics. Ancient Egyptian Magic and Folklore was another part of that topic that he relished as well.
His hand shot into the air with poise, as he had grown accustomed to doing, courtesy of the common rules most of the professors shared, however, he put it back down as Professor Faye mentioned that hands were not necessary and to just call out a topic.
He looked around the room before he spoke, it seemed that everyone was still thinking about a topic or subject that they wanted to learn.
"Well, I already know a great deal about the Ancient Egyptians, I would really like to know the History of Elemental Magic." he said factually. His research earlier in the year which had yielded loads of information, had failed to cover the practice of elemental magic. It was briefly mentioned here and there, but for some reason, it was an avoided topic, and he wanted to know if Professor Faye had any worthy knowledge of the subject.

Post by D'rorah Philosophy on Nov 8, 2007 13:04:10 GMT -5
(OOC: Dee would not be late for a class unless she was actually dying, so I hope you don't mind if I RP that I've got here before the lesson began. If you do, let me know and I'll mod my post.)
D'rorah made her way into the room quietly. Her eyes cast around the room, landing upon Dylan almost immediately. It took her a couple of beats to rip herself away from her custom of sitting in the front row. After a moment of internal deliberation, she made her way to the seat immediately to Dylan's left and sank into it with a fluid movement.
She began setting out her things, waiting to see if Dylan would notice her. She hoped her mere presence would be enough to comfort him, because she had absolutely no intention of diverting her attention from the lesson. Truth be told, he was in for a bit of a railing when class ended. She fully intended to express her displeasure for Dylan's failure to see to his well being by staying out of classes for just a day or so longer to recuperate.
D'rorah heard Alessandro volunteer that he was interested in learning more about Elemental Magic. Had she not been so good an containing her emotions, she might have plotzed right then and there. Elemental Magic was an incredibly obscure branch of magic which most believed was pure mythology. She couldn't believe he would have the gall to bring it up in class and connect himself to it so blatantly... any servant of the Mage who happened to be around would surely sit up and take note of him now. She had been counting on the ability to work in secrecy for as long as possible... at least until they had begun to figure out more of who the Mage's servants were.
D'rorah raised her voice, even though she knew that any attempt to divert attention from the first topic would be completely futile. "I believe it would be interesting to cover the history of ancient Mesopotamia. I already know quite a bit about the ancient Mesopotamians, but it would be quite interesting to delve into the more intricate details in a setting where debate and discussion are possible." Her voice was calm and even, betraying nothing of her irritation and surprise at Alessandro's initial query. She paused for only a moment to add. "It seems rather ridiculous to waste class time with the mythological nonsense of Elemental Magic after it has been disproven by rational thinkers time and time again." Yes, best to remove herself from the subject entirely.

Kerridon nodded in satisfaction when Professor Faye explained that they would be studying the Ancient Egyptians. It was one of the branches of both magical and muggle history he found most interesting, which was helped greatly by his knowledge of Hieroglyphics.
"Well, I already know a great deal about the Ancient Egyptians, I would really like to know the History of Elemental Magic."
His ears perked up at this comment. This could be very informative. Without turning around, he pinpointed the location of the voice to where another Ravenclaw boy had been sitting. He decided to take a little risk for once. He sent his mind over towards where the Ravenclaw was sitting and gently probed for any mental barriers, being very cautious so that if there were any the boy would dismiss any disturbances as being so minor they weren't worth worrying over. That was the plan, at least.
Turning his attention back to the class while performing this task, he heard what D'rorah said about the Elemental Magic being disproved.
Nice try, Miss Philosophy, he thought to himself. We all know you are not really that ignorant.
"I already have much knowledge concerning Hieroglyphics," he offered to Professor Faye. "But I myself would be interested in learning the apparent myth of Elemental Magic. Truthful or not, it has been proved time and time again that even legends originate from fact. It would be interesting to discover what truth this particular idea of Elemental Magic started as."

Post by Keaira O'Connell on Nov 8, 2007 15:55:44 GMT -5
It seemed a little odd to Keaira top actually be back in classes. She had spent most of the past few weeks doing other things that it seemed just so strange that she still had things to learn. As if her mind would actually absorb anything today. She had so many other things to deal with that she just didn’t want to go to class, but it would be very unlike her, and unbefitting a prefect to just skip a class. So she had taken her time, moseying her way on down the halls, stopping to tie her shoelaces, and occasionally picking some trash off the floor and throwing it in a rubbish bin. It wasn’t that much of a stalling tactic but it worked. As she approached the door she heard that the class had already started, so she eased the door open slowly, and walked in.
She scanned the area, noting where she would be sitting, and turned to the professor. “I’m sorry, I guess I’m still not used to being back here.” Keaira offered the small explanation, hoping that the headmistress would have already explained that Keaira had been out of school for the past few weeks due to a serious illness. She smiled politely and then headed to sit next to Alessandro. She smiled a little at him, and whispered hello. As she began to pull out her supplies, notebooks to the right of her text book, quills arranged at the top of her desk, with ink vials in three different colors set up next to them, yes perfect.
As the discussion hit her she took a moment to think about what she wanted to learn the most from this class. She already had a very good understanding of the history of wizard, relations, but there was one topic that perked her interest. “Professor, I would be interested in gaining more knowledge on ancient Greece, and how the use of magic helped to develop what muggles now call ‘myths’ and how things like that lead to stricter laws regarding magical creatures, and muggle awareness.”

((OOC: Dee – Totally understandable. I have edited my post so that you appear. ))
Inside, she sighed a breath of relief when one of the students spoke. She waved her hand in the direction of the board where chalkline words began to appear under the appropriate headings: Ancient Egypt…. She stopped when he mentioned Elemental Magic, for it was a subject that was particularly near and dear to her heart. She was about to speak when another student, the lone female whom she remembered as D’rorah of Ravenclaw house spoke up.
"I believe it would be interesting to cover the history of ancient Mesopotamia. I already know quite a bit about the ancient Mesopotamians, but it would be quite interesting to delve into the more intricate details in a setting where debate and discussion are possible. It seems rather ridiculous to waste class time with the mythological nonsense of Elemental Magic after it has been disproven by rational thinkers time and time again.”
Kailee directed the words Ancient Mesopotamia onto the board and again Elemental Magic was mentioned. “Ridiculous is such an interesting word, D’rorah, as is typically means that the subject is arousing or deserving of ridicule. I intend for this class to be a forum for you all to explore the world of magic…” She waved her hand in the direction of the board and the words Elemental Magic appeared. She looked to the Ravenclaw boy who had been first to speak, and then to D’rorah. “…Theoretical or otherwise.”
"I already have much knowledge concerning Hieroglyphics; but I myself would be interested in learning the apparent myth of Elemental Magic. Truthful or not, it has been proved time and time again that even legends originate from fact. It would be interesting to discover what truth this particular idea of Elemental Magic started as."
A smile spread across her face as the word Heiroglyphics wrote itself on the board. “It seems that this is a subject of great interest to you all… We will certainly have time to visit it this semester.”
“I’m sorry, I guess I’m still not used to being back here.”
“Not a problem at all, please take a seat,” she smiled and looked to the rest of the class for discussion. Once the student had settled herself, she offered an answer that Kailee found most satisfying. “Ancient Greece,” she said, the words forming on the board. “…is so unique particularly when it comes to muggles and their interpretation… A most admirable subject for our perusal.”
“All of these topics,” she said, gesturing to the board. “…will be great for this semester.” Her eyes fell to the words “Elemental Magic” and rested there for a tad longer than what was probably appropriate, but she continued. “I very much appreciate your feedback, for my intention is for this class to be as much yours as it is mine.”
"So, to give us an idea of where to begin.... The course is titled History of Magic, so it would only be appropriate for us to define what magic is," she spoke as she stood from her position sitting on the desk and walked out to where the student's desks were, taking as seat facing the board. The two columns of text wiggled to the far side and the new title, What is Magic? appeared.
"All right class, tell me in the most basic or advanced sense... What is Magic? How can we tell that it is present? What must we first know, to understand it?"

Quin sprinted around a hallway, her bag almost flying off her back, her short hiar streaming out. Digging her heals in, she went to jarring stop outside of the classroom, brushing back her hair, she jauntliy went into the room. Seeing most of the students were already there, she waved a greeting to the teacher, saying 'hullo', and looked around. She saw the Ravenclaw she had met in the library. Directly walking away from him, if Heno didn't trust him, niether did she, she went to the back and sat next to Jason. "Sorry I'm late, I thought I was going to charms." She said politely, aware the lesson had already started.
She took out her text book, and a small, furry head poked out, curling up on the seat between them. Heno yawned sleeply, then tugged on Jason's shirt, chewing dreamingly. Looking up at the board, she saw they were learning about Eygpt. Nudging Jason in the side, she gave him a teasing look, "Aww, look!" She whispered, pointing to Heno, "He misses you."

Questions already? But . . . she hasn't taught us anything yet. How can she already be asking questions? It's ok. Just look like you're thinking deeply and let the others answer.
Jason was not a fan of class discussion. He was all for free thinking, but didn't much relish sharing those free thoughts of his with others. He didn't mind writing up essays and handing them to the teacher. He could take his time on those; he could make sure that he'd said everything he wanted to say in a clear, precise way. That wasn't even close to how it was in class discussions. He had to try to explain his view right on the spot, with no preparation and speaking out loud. Such channels of communication rarely worked well for Jason.
The Egyptians were fascinating for sure. An ancient culture that mysteriously seemed very advanced. It was always an interesting topic, and now with magic thrown into the mix it was likely to be quite an enjoyable learning experience. Or not. Jason's face turned to Alessandro as the boy suggested studying Elemental Magic, then turned again to D'rorah as she offered her own suggestion, both about what they could study and what they should think of Elemental Magic. Finally he looked at the Ravenclaw boy he didn't recognize. No, he's seen him in Ancient Runes. He seemed to also like the idea of learning the history of Elemental Magic.
Jason's gaze drifted between the three Ravenclaws. He'd never even heard of Elemental Magic. Jason had always been a good student with a fairly sharp mind, but he suddenly felt very undereducated in the presence of those three. Alessandro he liked. The boy was friendly and seemed genuinely concerned for others, despite the reckless behavior Jason had witnessed from him. D'rorah he was a little afraid of. Well no, he was a little afraid of everybody. D'rorah he was actually scared of. She wasn't cruel that he'd seen, but she seemed somewhat cold and distant; generally disinterested in other people, as if they didn't matter. The last boy he knew virtually nothing about, except that he was a sixth or seventh year based on his assigned seat in Ancient Runes.
Maybe it was just something that had come up in their common room, but it seemed odd to the young Gryffindor that three Ravenclaws would evidently feel strongly one way or another about a branch of magic obscure enough that he'd never heard of it. He'd have to ask Alessandro about that when he got the chance. The boy, whom he was probably most comfortable talking to out of everyone at the school, probably wouldn't tell him much even if it was something significant, but Jason didn't want to approach a new face and ask such a question. The idea of walking up to the towering prefect with his curiosity laid bare was out of the question. Jason was sure he'd faint before he got three words out.
These pondering kept Jason from even noticing Keaira's entrance, and it wasn't until Professor Faye asked a second, truly difficult question that his awareness snapped back to the room. He immediately resumed his pensive pose, glad at least that she didn't seem interested in calling on students. Nodding absently to Quin's statement, he ignored the creature that seemed to so love destroying his clothes. He slipped his wand free and tapped his sleeve, once more appreciating the study he'd put into being able to cast spells without speaking the incantations. The fabric repaired instantly. He kept the wand, ready to use it again in a few minutes if need be.

Late? Impossible – surely not Alexis Rubuckle! But, alas, dashing wildly through the corridors was that inquisitive young girl with vivacious red hair. Her robes were distinctly ruffled, and her face smeared with an unidentifiable brown muck: perhaps her research into the flobberworms under that rock near the Gamekeeper’s hut had gone overtime?
Well, regardless of her reasons, Ally was still late for the first time in her life, and she was clearly flustered about the ordeal. Even as she neared the mahogany doors which heralded the outside of the History of Magic classroom, her cheeks were distinctly flushed. She slowed down to a stop, teetering at the entrance for the room. Holding the pause for a moment, she then lowered her left ear to the wood, listening carefully with her lip bitten in concentration.
"All right class, tell me in the most basic or advanced sense... What is Magic? How can we tell that it is present? What must we first know, to understand it?"
And now Alexis coloured even further: she’d been holding onto the slim hope that maybe – just maybe – she wasn’t actually late. This, however, had been nothing more than foolish optimism, and she gave a forlorn sigh as she grasped the brass doorhandle with her slender fingers and pulled the door open.
“Sorry,” she murmured abashedly to the teacher as she shuffled inside. “I lost track of time, and...”
She trailed off as she glanced curiously around the classroom, before quickly tottering to a seat behind Quin. Piling an assortment of fresh parchments and quills onto the table, she shot Professor Faye an apologetic glance as she lowered herself into the chair.
