"You're such a Ravenclaw, D'rorah."
[blue]You make that remark almost as though it were a negative thing, Mister Bishop[/blue], thought D'rorah silently in return. She followed along with his train of thought, finding it harder to block him out anyway due to their recent mental connection. It simply was not worth the effort of the extra mental exertions that such a barrier would require.
[blue]For one who thinks the lesson a farce, you certainly do seem to be following the proceedings quite closely,[/blue] she added, willing the tone of a smirk into her thought. D'rorah knew she had no talent for divinations... she had seen such gifts in action in helping Alessandro... and had some notion from Bryan's thoughts that there might be an odd sort of divinations talent within him.
She found the idea of a general class at Hogwarts for divination slightly odd herself. But she supposed it was one of the few places to seek out new seers and diviners. Though she couldn't imagine anyone risking the poor grade... Like telepathy, she considered divinations a rare mental talent... far too many who professed some aptitude for it were mere charlatans, the worst sort of pretenders. And even those who had well-refined the talent, seemed likely only as good as the inconstant minds of those involved in their visions.
She offered up no questions at the Professor's prompting, quietly remaining in her seat as she evaluated her new Head of House. She supposed that one so accomplished would be a fair fit for Ravenclaw house. She would have to keep her eye open on Bridget... she might prove useful at some point for the Shadow Wars...

Gripping Zee’s hand firmly but not anywhere near crushing, Kai shook it and went back to what he was doing. He appreciated that the boy took the time for introductions even though he was obviously not in the mood and so respectfully let him return to his solitude afterward. As he returned to face the professor, Kai saw a Ravenclaw girl about his age sit between Zee and himself who he quickly heard her name as D’rorah. He was glad to hear that Zee offered a similar, brief hello to her as the one he offered Kai. After she said her hellos to Zee, Kai again reached over and offered his hand for the girl, "Hey there D'rorah, I'm Kai." It was a classroom setting and he did not want to interrupt so he said it quietly but enough to get her attention.

To Silren the introduction was more of a pleasantry than sincerity but the boy offered his sincerely which caught her a little off guard. As he introduced himself though, his name rang a bell and she immediately became more interesting in what he had to say. “So he is the Elemental Master of Fire,” she thought as she quickly evaluated him and his looks. He was cute but that was where he was going to remain until she saw some display of power. Of course, she didn’t know that about herself yet. She began wondering how there were so many attractive boys at the school. With a pleasant smile she reached out to grasp his hand in the fashion a lady should, as they had taught her at Beauxbatons. “As you have heard, my name is Silren Chalis. Though, truly the pleasure is mine.” She thought for a moment and decided to test his knowledge. If he passed she would ask him to be her partner for the class, if not than she would merely continue on and find someone else later. “I am curious about my rune but I am at a loss. Do you know anything about Isa?”

As Silren indulged him in a handshake, he flashed a small, closed smile, indicating that he was happy to make her acquaintance. As she asked him about her rune, he looked slightly confused as if she had asked him some trick question. His eyes darted to the rune laid out on the table and then back to Silren.
"Well, Isa is the eleventh rune in Elder Futhark. It represents water in it's frozen state, Ice. It's said that this particular rune can mean "frozen" as in the sense that things are "frozen" the way they are and they're not about to change. Furthermore, it evokes destructive power while on another facet, preservation. Divinatory meanings perhaps can suggest creation, preservation, destruction, clarity, force, and delay, to name a few. Usually runes have an inverted meaning, however, since Isa cannot be inverted because of the nature of its marking, in opposition, it can signify dullness, blindness, dissipation, treachery, illusion, deceit, betrayal, guile, stealth, ambush, etcetera etcetera..." He spoke softly, so as not to disturb the class around him, and had leaned in a bit closer to her as he explained her rune. He drew a breath once finished with his explanation. Alessandro didn't realize how much he had actually learned from reading on about the fundamental basics of Ancient runes. Even though he didn't relish the class, it didn't mean he wouldn't be learned on the subject.

D'rorah looked up as an introduction was made her way. She was unaccustomed to speaking in class unless it was to answer a direct question; however, she thought a quick, quiet introduction would be little disturbance to the students in front of them, and was unlikely to be heard by any but her, Zane, and Kai.
She noted as she accepted his outstretched hand and shook it firmly that he was wearing gloves. It was an odd piece of modesty, causing her to wonder what might have necessitated them. Her own hands, besides her face, were the only pieces of flesh she allowed to be visible to the world at large, so her immediate thought was for some sort of concealment.
"[blue]It is a pleasure to meet you at last, Mister Jahnavi. I had heard Hogwarts was receiving a new transfer and wondered when we might encounter one another.[/blue]" D'rorah, of course, found it necessary to keep up with the comings and goings at Hogwarts as best she could. Every new arrival was a potential ally or enemy... and with the death of Gat Soldier she knew it would be to be particularly keen on any new faces. One never knew where the next player in the Shadow Wars might present him or herself.
Unwilling to talk much during class--indeed, finding her words so far quite a breach from her usual conduct--D'rorah thought she might speak to this new student after class. Something about him intrigued her. For one, his accent... as a linguist, she was always interested in the language of those she met and could tell a great deal about Kai's past by simply listening to the pleasant timbres of his voice. And then there was the fact that he was of the same year as she... he might be a decent study partner for the upcoming NEWT examinations... though, D'rorah tended to delve into such studies in solitude. "[blue]Perhaps further introduction might be made after class,[/blue]" she suggested, politely retracting her hand and returning her full attention to the front of the classroom.

Bridget waited for more questions and was surprised by the lack of enthusiasm. She hoped that would change, but apparently the stigma of Divination being a “soft” subject was still very much in force here. However, the one Ravenclaw youngster did have a good question, so she answered it. “Actually, yes, latent divination talents can exist, since there are many differing types of divinatory talent. It’s not all just reading Tarot or being a Seer; there are many shades of grey in the spectrum, as it were.” Bridget smiled at the assembled students and continued.
“Some people can read information about either an item’s owner or the location it had been in from the item itself. Some people on my old squad have a sixth sense about danger, and knew when to avoid certain situations. Some people can draw things they see, such as a suspect’s face or the location of a crime scene. Others are capable of locating missing persons or suspects who are in hiding. Our Seers can give us information about the future of a case or a mission, depending on their specialty. Any or all of these can be latent, and usually developed in their teen years, so any one of you could have Talent.”
Bridget stopped for a moment, and considered. “If any of you think you either have already developed something or could be in the process of doing so, please come see me, and we’ll try to narrow things down and help you get a handle on it. Untrained Gifts can drive you mad with all the information, if you can’t decipher it.” Bridget’s face suddenly grew grave and inexplicably sad. “And sometimes, the Sight can abandon you altogether, which can seem even worse." She bit her lip for a moment, and then seemed to come back to herself. “But enough of my lecturing. Let me give you your books, and then a simple first assignment.”
Neat piles of textbooks floated out to the various desks, accompanied by a small wooden box and two pouches, one green and one icy blue. “The box contains a Wizarding Tarot deck, the blue pouch a set of Futhark rune stones, and the green a set of Celtic Ogham sticks. We’ll be using those later, but you are welcome to experiment with them on your own.” She glanced around once more at the class. “For our next session Thursday afternoon, I want you to read the first chapter of the Di Amus text, and then write a parchment of at least one page on whether divination should be considered an art or a science and back your reasoning up.” She paused and met each student’s eyes briefly. “Thank you everyone! I am available after class for questions. Dismissed.”
(OOC: Class 1 ends here, and Class 2 will start early next week. I'll make a separate thread for the assigment, and everyone submitting an essay will get points for their House!)

Listening to D’rorah’s response, Kai was a little uncomfortable with her formalities. They were always a present structure in his life but he quickly learned that most of the time, people who maintained the formal structure were hiding something. “Watch yourself; you judge too quickly,” he heard the voice of Vidur in his head. Agreeing, he smiled back before replying, “Alright, that would be nice.”
A few moments after he finished his brief conversation with D’rorah, the last student sat down and the professor began speaking. He listened lightly, taking notes as necessary until she mentioned the sight ability by touching objects. Immediately he froze with his quill in hand before he was able to start writing again. “She couldn’t have known… this is a divinations class after all. It must just be part of her required study,” he rushed his thoughts together. As she mentioned if anyone had any of the abilities to come see her, he toyed with the idea. What if she didn’t know anything and was really tricking him? What if she was right about the ability leaving? For some reason he could not place, he felt a tinge of worry wash over him. The ability had been part of him for so long that now it seemed he didn’t want to lose it. He would have to remember to use his ability tonight and confirm that it was still with him. For right now though, he would wait. Perhaps in another class or two he talked with the professor about his ability.

With no one seeming to pay any attention to her late arrival, least of all the professor, Caitlin let out a small sigh of relief and listened attentively as the lesson continued. Alessandro was talking to a Slytherin on his other side about a rune that had apparently been drawn for her. There was a fair amount of conversation in the room other than the teacher talking – she could hear Zee and D’rorah, and a voice that possibly belonged to Kai. Still, she paid attention to the teacher – it was interesting to hear all the different ways that divination could be displayed. At the mention of “some people can draw things they see”, Caitlin’s thoughts immediately turned to Bryan. She knew he was in the class – she’d seen him upon entering, and he’d told her he was taking the class – and hopefully he was paying attention. Maybe she had been right about his drawing. Perhaps he did have some kind of ability.
As the rather large book pile arrived on her desk in front of her along with a tarot deck, rune stones and Ogham sticks, Cait found herself having to quickly retrieve a pen from her pocket to scribble down the homework. Not wanting any kind of bad impression to stick, she made a mental note to get this done tonight and handed in as soon as possible. With the class dismissed rather sooner than she’d thought it would, she rose from her seat and turned to Alessandro, waiting to make sure he had finished talking to Silren before speaking. “Did I miss anything important?” she asked quietly, referring to her late arrival. Best to find out now if she needed to catch up on anything.

As Alessandro continued with his explanation of her rune, Silren’s features showed a deepened sense of impress; her eyebrows rising ever so slightly as her eyes widened. A small smile grew across her face when he finished and she giggled to herself as she replied, “You seem the epitome of a Ravenclaw. Forgive my surprise but I have only heard of a Ravenclaw’s intelligence before now. You exceeded it still as I am sure that you could have talked me into a lull if you had chosen. The fact that you had not impresses me further.” A moment later Silren looked away to hide a fake blush before leaning close, as if to whisper to him, so that he could smell her light perfume, but not close enough to make him uncomfortable, and queried him quietly, “I would be enchanted if you would be my study partner for this class.” She pulled a small distance away smiling again and let the absence of the question be a question in itself.
