Susan shrugged in embarrassment. She didn’t think much of her own art and Bryan’s simple suggestion that she might be good, even though he had never set eyes on her own sketches, sent pride beaming through her. The book was relieved of her and Susan let her hands fall to her lap. She let her eyes follow his sketch pad as it was returned to his bag. She understood when Bryan explained that he did not think himself as good an artist as most made him out to be. Naturally, he would always be striving for something better than he already was. And of course, art is judged by what it means to the viewer; it’s different for everyone.
As Bryan made it known that she could leave if she wanted to, Susan was filled with the dread that was her homework. That’s what Sunday night was for right? “Actually,” Susan replied, catching his ocean-colored eyes, “I have absolutely nothing to do today.” She mentally crossed out the mark on her calendar, imagining an arrow leading the notion of homework to Sunday. She watched him, searching for a reaction.
“Would you want to hang out for a while?” she asked. She had absolutely nothing in mind, as she voiced her proposal. Being at school there were only so many things one could do. There was of course the lake, but also the gardens, and the Quidditch pitch (which Susan would stay away from of course). Her thoughts lingered on the Room of Requirement briefly, but skittered away almost immediately. As it was the weekend, Hogsmeade was now an option, but she hadn’t dabbled much in the magical city other than to attend to her part-time job at Honeydukes.
Susan also came across the thought that maybe he wouldn’t want to hang out. He did suggest that she could leave; maybe he had things to do as he had assumed she did. Before she got too ahead of herself, she added, “That is, of course, if you’ve nothing to do either.” Her hands were still in her lap, but she had begun to wring them underneath the table in her nervousness. She stopped after forcing herself there was nothing to be nervous about. Either he would or he wouldn’t. Susan only hoped the answer would be yes, otherwise she faced a day of nothing or worse . . . homework.

Bryan was momentarily surprised when she stated that she did not have anything for the day planned. Bryan would have thought she would have had something planned with her friends or something. It was the weekend after all. Didn't people usually make plans to have fun? Bryan's friendships were few. Sure he was a friendly person but for some reason he just didn't have many actual friends. It was sad almost that his best friend was his cousin.
"Don't know why you'd want to hang out with boring ol' me," he stated with a slight smile. "I don't even know what I'm going to do after leaving the Great Hall." He stated with a small shrug of his shoulders.
He really didn't see why she would want to hang out with him. Of course, he was him so he didn't really see much appeal in himself. The boy was notorious for keeping to himself, despite a friendly and open demeanor. So, it was a bit strange to be thought of as someone wanting to hang out with him. His cousin was a different story. He couldn't shake Mike if he wanted to. There was the problem of being related to each other that enhance that trouble a bit. But for all his "complaining" he really did enjoy his cousin's presence.
"What would you have us do besides keeping these benches warm?" he then asked her with an arched brow and a slight smirk at the corner of his mouth.

Susan had thought about her usual friends. The first person to come to mind was Dylan, but of course he was always on her mind. It had occurred to her to hang out with him, but Susan figured he would be preoccupied for the moment with D’rorah. Susan wanted to give him his space for a day or two before adding to the pressures that presumably plagued him. Susan also thought of Caitlin. The last time she had come into direct contact with her had been in the Room of Requirement when D’rorah needed their help. Something had seemed off, and Susan hadn’t been able to catch up with her yet. She did want to see Caitlin, but she wasn’t ready to hash out the drama today.
Susan could think of a few other people. There was Alessandro, but he was still a little fun since coming back to school. Susan still wasn’t sure how she felt about Keaira and Zane. The majority of the people who came to mine were friends by association. She could think of a few dorm mates she was friendly with, but none enough to call up to do anything other than gossip before bed. Her cousin, Olivia, was around every now and then, but Susan couldn’t help but admit she was a little ditzy at times.
Interrupted from her thoughts, Susan nearly laughed at Bryan’s own suggestion that he was boring. Seeing the smirk, she was glad to see that he was using sarcasm in his statement. Susan would have hated to tell him all the ways he was not boring, and she probably could have done it. Although she’d only known Bryan for a little less than an hour now, she felt comfortable enough to want to spend time with him. Susan had to agree with him in the fact that she had no plans prior to what she might be formulating right now.
As Bryan asked what she would propose they do, Susan was pushed back to her original predicament. While his answer was vaguely a ‘yes’, Susan had yet to propose an activity. Looking casually to the window, she saw a clear day ahead of them. A few clouds could be seen but the majority of the sky remained sunny and bright. Of course it would be cold, as Februarys at Hogwarts always were, but it wouldn’t be unbearable. As keen as she was on the outdoors, it was the slightest breeze that convinced her, she could almost smell the flowers already.
“How about a walk around the lake?” Susan suggested, openly looking toward the window now. She glanced back at Bryan, waiting for him to frown in disapproval, to say he would rather go to the library, or to shrug in a noncommittal way, claiming he had better things to do than walk around a puddle of water. Susan raised her eye brows anticipating his reaction, hoping for an affirmative, but ready to suggest alternative activities should the need arise.

Despite his slight smile to his boring remark, Bryan was partly serious in his question. He didn't think himself very interesting. Aside from drawing, and once he started he tended to forget all about everyone else, he was rather boring. So far only Mike had been able to stick by him and bug him while drawing. However, that was usually because Mike was working on a song or something of that sort. They were both young men of their art.
He noticed as she seemed to glance out the window before turning her attention fully to it. Bryan turned his own gaze to look at it as well. However, he didn't see anything that inspire the intense look it was given by his fellow Gryffindor so he turned his gaze back to the girl and waited for her to say something. His gaze caught hers when she turned her back back to him.
Bryan couldn't really say anything against her suggestion of a walk. He had nothing better to do, and had stated as much previously. He arched a brow as if he was about to contest it but instead stated, "Okay." He paused. "Shall we get going then?" he then asked her.
He lifted he strap of his bag and slid it over his shoulder. He assumed they would probably have to go back to the common room to get warmer clothes, unless it wasn't too cold outside.

(ooc: Sorry for the modding, I can change the post if you need me to.)
Susan smiled brightly as Bryan fully committed to spending time with her. As he had said earlier, he didn’t go all out to make new friends. It pleased Susan to know that he decided she was worth hanging out with, even if it were for just a walk around the lake. Remembering the season and weather, Susan was disappointed slightly. She absolutely couldn’t wait until spring. Of course, Susan adored every season, but spring was when everything came to life. Nearing the end of winter, they might catch a daffodil or two, but even that chance was slim.
Deciding a jacket would be needed for a walk, Susan saw that Bryan wasn’t dressed for the out doors either. “Let’s go up and get jackets first,” Susan directed, standing up. Heading toward the grand staircase, Susan led the way to their common room. Along the way the conversation was left at a minimum. They walked in a comfortable silence. Occasionally Susan made a comment about a portrait hanging along the staircase on corridor, but no decisive conversation was made.
Reaching the Gryffindor quarters, Susan supplied the password and they entered the common room. Promising to return lickity split, Susan entered her own dormitory to grab her jacket. She returned momentarily with a red and white windbreaker. The sweater underneath would sufficiently insulate, and her jeans usually did the trick when the weather was chilly. She kept her usual flats on, but paired with some colored socks, her feet would be nice and warm. Susan waited by the window for Bryan. It had been a while since Susan had a chance to actually spend time outdoors, and she was excited to be breathing fresh air once more.

Bryan returned her smile before he got his feet and followed her out of the Great Hall. He was correct in his assumption they would be going to the Common Room, as she stated as much before they left the hall. Bryan didn't mind the cold that much, he just disliked snow. Bryan was not really a winter fan, granted he didn't really like summer either. No. The boy preferred spring and autumn. Those months were usually comfortable and not in the temperature extremes of hot and cold.
As they passed portraits, Bryan inclined his head to the occupants in greeting. They soon enough came to the common room and the two of them went their separate ways when they went to their dormitories. Bryan went to his bed, taking his coat out of his trunk. He slid the garment over his shoulders and his arms into the sleeves. He adjusted his shoulder bag, not leaving it behind, before he walked back down to the common room. The boy glanced around quickly before he spotted her walking to the window and sitting down to wait for him.
He walked over to her. "Ready to go?" he asked as he stood there. He placed his hands into the pockets of his coat. He looked at her jacket and almost wanted to ask if she would be warm enough however Bryan held his tongue. She probably knew what she was doing.

Captivated by the scene beyond the towering window, Susan did not notice Bryan’s return at once. She gazed at the dark forest, contemplating what dark creatures might be inhibiting it at this moment. And then she moved her gaze to the lake, their destination. Several fond memories were attached to the lake, and with them a warm connation bloomed. Many days of swimming, meeting new people, and making new friends were connected to the large body of water just past the castle.
Only after Bryan had spoken did Susan realize he was standing near to her. She broke her gaze and turned to face him, startled. He stood with his hands in the pockets of his coat, still donning his bag, which presumably held his sketch book among other things. Susan noticed his new attire was slightly heavier than hers and probably more suited to the current state of weather. Yet she didn’t rush to exchange coats or to grab a pair mittens or a hat. Susan loved all weather and if experiencing it meant a little cold, she was ready for it.
Susan rose from her chair and met eyes with Bryan, finally placing a smile on her face. “Yes,” she said confidently before leaving their common room, almost as quickly as they had come. They descended the stairs in a fashion similar to the way they ascended and in no time they were exiting the castle and headed in the direction of the lake.
Susan set the pace slow. Upon setting foot outside of the thick stone walls of the school, she had taken a deep breath, instantly at ease with the presence of her element so near. The weather was indeed chilly, causing her to mimic Bryan in placing her hands in the pockets of her windbreaker. For now she was fine with the brisk breezes teasing her hair, but should the weather become too much of an issue, she had a charm or two up her sleeve, ready to ease the chill of the air.
Approaching the lake, Susan figured they wouldn’t be able to walk the entire length of the lake, unless Bryan had planned on spending the entire day with her. They could always walk a part and then turn back the way they had come if time ran short. Susan, however, had nowhere to be and decided to let the thought go until it was brought up. She looked out across the placid lake, searching for a ripple. She cared to see the squid that lurked. She hadn’t seen much of it since the beginning of the year when it had caught hold of her in a friendly way whilst she swam. It had been one of the more amiable lake-creatures, and Susan wouldn’t mind seeing it again.
Though she looked, she could not see the squid. Perhaps the weather kept it beneath the surface. Not able to bear the complete silence that they walked in any longer Susan returned her attention to her walking companion. “So,” Susan began, “how’s life?” She asked Bryan broadly, not really intending the question to take them anywhere specifically. She watched him carefully; curious to how he would choose to answer her question.

Bryan inclined his head when she stated that she was ready to go. He didn't question her choice of apparel, even though he had noted how she had looked over his and seemed to do a mental comparison. He wasn't about to make a big deal over things. It wasn't his style. Bryan wasn't one to get into someone else's business. He only did if the person was going to get hurt in some way or form. Bryan doubted that a possible little cold was something to get worked up over. Instead, he followed her out of the common room.
For the most part, their trek outside mirrored that of their trek to the common room. The pair walked in silence. Bryan didn't mind the silence between them. He could as talkative as anyone but he could also be just as silent. Stepping outside, Bryan felt a rush of cold air hit his face and he felt a shiver run down his spine. The difference in temperatures was noticeable, and he was glad they had went for their coats. The pair moved over the grounds and a light wind was blowing through the area.
Bryan was not normally a fan of winter. He had a dislike of being out in the snow. It was wet and cold. However, this did not mean the boy refused to go out in it or even make a big deal over it. He just wasn't fond of it. However, he did have a fondness for the wind. It was not something he could really describe. There was just a feeling of comfort when there was a strong breeze, or even a small trickle of one, blowing about the grounds. Bryan never really thought much about it, never really noticed that lately when he was outside there was always some sort of breeze. He had always figured it was nature and nothing more.
Approaching the lake, the two walked a small distance before Susan broke the silence between them. Bryan had been observing the open patch of ice over in the middle of the lake when she spoke. He turned his gaze to her, contemplating his answer to it. "Much as it always is," he stated. "How's life for you? Has it done any interesting tricks? It's been rather sedate for me," he then stated a smiling trailing over his lips.

Susan followed Bryan’s gaze to the ice along the surface of the lake before meeting his eyes as he turned to face her. His reply indicated nothing in particular had been going on lately. She found that hard to believe considering something was almost always going on at Hogwarts, but she didn’t complain. There wasn’t much she could say about her own life either.
Susan then laughed lightly as he compared life to a dog that might sit or stay on command. “No tricks,” Susan returned, playing with the metaphor, insinuating that her life had been pretty much sedate as well. “But I’ve some friends going through rough times,” she couldn’t help but add. She hated to bring up any unpleasant topics, but it was the truth after all, and lying was never a good way to make and keep new friends.
She thought about D’rorah and Caitlin, and of course the pain Susan was aware Dylan felt for D’rorah. She didn’t raise any names or details to Bryan, assuming he wouldn’t like to hear of such dark topics, or even if she should tell him in the first place. It was almost impossible to tell who was in league with the mage any longer. But Bryan seemed nice enough. She smiled weakly, hoping the topic could be dismissed to something lighter.
A particularly strong breeze came through suddenly, whipping Susan’s hair around her face. She sputtered slightly, pulling the stray hairs out of her mouth and using a thin hair band to keep her hair in a low pony and out of her face. It hadn’t been windy like this in a while. And while Susan enjoyed the nice breeze every once in a while, she did notice when it began to pick up. The cool air was refreshing, but oddly out of place. She allowed her thoughts to dwell else where though, searching for a new topic to speak on, should this one prove too dreary.

Bryan smiled when she carried on with his little metaphor. He had not placed any thought into it, not trying to be funny. Sometimes one just had those little moments of genius to say something good and then one could also have one of those times when one said the worse thing possible. Bryan has had his full share of both moments like any one. He was only mildly surprised when Susan had reported that her life was rather sedate as well. He inclined his head in understanding. It was hard to think of something interesting to report in one's life on the spot, unless something was really exciting for the person was actually going on. It seemed neither Bryan or Susan were having one of those times.
"Ohh," he murmured when she stated that some of her friends were having a tough time. "I hope it gets better for them," he then stated sincerely. She may not have mentioned names or circumstances but that did not mean Bryan couldn't wish it was better. He wasn't someone who wished malice on others by nature, but that was rather apparent in his manner. He didn't ask for details or names, but rather just made his one comment and then let the matter drop. It was close to one of those times when later, when talking about it with someone else, the other person probably would have wished for one to have probed a bit more. Wished that they had shown more interest in the lives of others. After all, if one's life was currently boring wasn't it more interesting to see what was going to someone else? Especially if it showed to be more interesting? Bryan wasn't one of those curious people. It never occurred to him to ask things during those moments, but then maybe that was because he was a guy and didn't show an insane amount of interest in the rumor mill like so many of the girls around the school.
He raised a hand to brush his hair back when a strong breeze went past him. Aside from fixing his hair he didn't seem bothered by it. "Good breeze today," he stated off hand as he turned his gaze back to the lake, to watch the open water ripple as the wind blew past. "Probably because of the lake," he added. He noticed that there always seemed to be some sort of breeze by any large body of water. He didn't quite understand it, but he didn't pay close attention to how the weather functioned, so perhaps it was normal that he didn't know.

It was nice to hear Bryan wish her friends some better luck. Although he didn’t know of the people she spoke of, he was thoughtful enough to hope for them. Then again, maybe he did know them after all, and they were only unaware that they were speaking of people they both knew. Just thinking of all the possibilities made Susan’s head spin; hence she stopped with the six degrees of Susan.
“Thank you,” Susan voiced her emotions, “I do too.” Depressing as it was, Susan felt her overall mood began to drop. For the moment, she pushed the thoughts of her troubled friends aside. Susan looked up as Bryan mentioned the weather. Susan always figured a conversation was at its worst when the weather was brought up. The weather was the common topic that anyone could relate to. Not to mention the majority of the time it was utterly boring.
Hearing him blame the lake for the strong winds, Susan could have delved into the speculation as to whether it could be considered a land breeze or a sea breeze, or in this case a lake-breeze. But as she was beginning to bore herself simply by thinking about it, she adjusted the conversation once more.
“Do you have any siblings at Hogwarts?” Susan asked rather randomly, although it truly wasn’t. They were indeed at Hogwarts, and it would be perfectly reasonable to bring up such a subject, or that’s at least how Susan figured it. She wasn’t sure why she brought up the subject of siblings, granted she didn’t care for her own much. Either way, she moved the conversation forward.

Bryan didn't give much thought over the fact he had commented on the weather. He knew it was often a crash subject but he wasn't really using it as such. Bryan had commented on it because he had noticed it. He wasn't uncomfortable with that line of conversation and after he had spoke about the wind he didn't seem as if he was going to comment any further on it. Instead he had started to turn his head back to the lake. His gaze had lingered their while Susan fought within herself for a different direction for their conversation.
Before she had spoken, Bryan thought he saw something surface from the lake but it was gone within a few seconds. It could have been the giant squid but he was inclined to believe it was probably his imagination playing trick on him. However, he did not follow this line of thought long as Susan was soon speaking asking him a question over his siblings. He turned his gaze to her. "Yeah, my two younger siblings ... Cara is a first year and Sam's a fourth year ... my sister Ricki graduated last year," the boy said answering her question.
"What about you? Do you have any siblings to annoy your life at school?" he asked with a smile. "Or are you lucky like me and have them plus a bunch of cousins here too?" he asked. His father side of the family was relatively large and he had eight cousins total on that side of the family, plus two from his mother's side. Bryan was closer to his father's side of the family that his mother's. But this was mostly from the fact that the Kelleys were all magical blood while his mother's family were muggles who didn't take to the idea of magic well.
Bryan glanced back to the lake while he waited for her to answer. He was looking to see if his mind would play another trick on him or if it was the squid and it would surface again. He doubted he would see something again and he was correct as he had turned his gaze back to Susan when she had began speaking in response to him.

Susan was happy to have the conversation rolling again. She smiled as Bryan mentioned his two younger siblings. At fourteen his sibling shared ages with her own sister. Although his oldest sibling had graduated, Susan figured it must be nice to have family at school. Seeing as all of his siblings he mentioned attended Hogwarts, Susan assumed he belonged to a mostly magical family.
Susan raised her eyebrows slightly as Bryan inquired about her own siblings. She even giggled slightly as he mentioned the chance of cousins too. Keeping a neutral face, Susan spoke of her sister saying, “My sister, Andrea, is fourteen too.” She paused a moment before continuing with a little difficulty, “She goes to a muggle high school back home.” Then, on a lighter note she added with a slight smile, “No siblings to annoy me, but I do have my cousin, Olivia, bouncing around the Gryffindor tower as well.”
Susan had followed Bryan’s gaze to the lake several times, before finally asking, “Have you seen the squid?” She smiled brightly at a topic associated with warm memories. Tucking her hands deeper into her pockets, Susan searched the surface of the placid lake for groping tentacles alongside Bryan.

Bryan nodded his head when Susan spoke about her sister who went to a muggle high school and then her cousin who did attend Hogwarts. He didn't really think much on it. He was unlikely to interact with either of them and his mind was not really giving him much of anything to comment on this information he had learned. Hence when she notice him look back to the lake and ask a new question, Bryan was a little relieved. Even if he wasn't sure what he saw it was a different topic and something new to talk about. It was strange trying to find something to talk about. Bryan had only just met this girl so some of the conversation seemed a little awkward. It wasn't like when one was with friends. With friends there was little fear or hesitation on what to say. But with someone you just met? You were cautious so as not to make a bad impression or scare the person way.
Bryan turned away from the lake to answer her. "I don't know. I saw something but I don't know if it was the squid or just my imagination," he stated in response. "And now that I'm watching and waiting for something, it probably won't happen again," he then added with a small chuckle.
He was a firm believer of the logic that when one was waiting for something that something does not happen. It was one of the reasons why he stuck to the rules. Bryan figured that the one time he bends them or breaks them is the time he would get in trouble for it. It was easier in his opinion just to follow the rules. He was not a rule breaker. He didn't get any joy or adrenaline rush from breaking them like some people did. Likewise, he did not have any problems with the rules, or he just didn't care enough about them.

As they casually walked, the castle slowly became further and further away from the two of them. Susan didn’t look back to check the distance, but she also found that she didn’t care so much. It was nice just to walk and to forget, if only for the moment, about the troubles of school work and the waging war of the Shadows and Lightfighters. Susan noticed nervously how each question, each an attempt at conversation easily died at the end of each response. She had hoped to find something in common, something easy to talk about. Every line she had thrown into their lake of a conversation had been reeled in fishless. Bryan refused to take the bait.
Drawn into a personal issue of lacking self confidence, Susan doubted her own ability to be interesting. Walking the lake no longer seemed an act of pleasure, but a task. For the first time, she glanced back to check their distance from the castle. They were not yet far enough to casually suggest they turn around, yet still too far to excuse herself and abandon her sorry attempt to be funny and interesting. It wasn’t usually this hard for Susan to make deep connections with new friends. It brought butterflies to her stomach thinking about future encounters with Bryan if this attempt at hanging out should fail.
Although before, they had both gone unnoticed to each other, now that they had both formally met, it would be impossible for Susan to ignore him in the future. The butterflies died some as she came to the thought, wondering if he would feel the same way. Perhaps he would forget her as easily as he had come across her. Should this next conversation prove a flop, would their next meeting be nonexistent? Worrying too much for her own good, Susan almost missed Bryan’s response to their small talk on the squid in the lake.
“Probably was the squid,” Susan said softly, still recovering from her loss of self confidence. When Bryan added his comment that because he was watching and waiting for the squid to reappear that it probably wouldn’t, Susan had to disagree. “Watching and waiting, no,” she agreed generally, then proposed her opinion, “But what about wishing?” She asked, “When you wish for something, don’t you want to believe it will happen?” Her question was deeper than she had intended it to be, but she hardly noticed, and figured Bryan wouldn’t take it too heavily either.
Rather than watching and waiting as Bryan had said, Susan glanced to the lake, subconsciously wishing for the squid to reappear. They continued to walk at their constant pace, but Susan’s gradual change in disposition made it somewhat easier. Feeding off of the Earth element all around them and without her realizing it, Susan subconsciously brought up a row of daffodils along the lake behind her with her elemental magic as she walked, anticipating what Bryan’s response might be, or if the squid would reappear at all.
