Kerridon followed the sparrow as it hopped downwards, eventually landing on the ground in human form and sitting down. At the mention of stressing her tree he jumped off, landing crouched down a few metres away from her then backing up to lean against the tree trunk besides her, turning to watch her as she spoke. He could hardly miss the scowl on her face but also wasn't about to dismiss his disagreement with her on the matter of keeping them secret.
He turned his face away slightly as she accused him, a flash of irritation crossing his face. The boy had been hurting D'rorah consciously and consistently for some time now, and as far as Kerridon was concerned his spell had been perfectly justified. [blue]"I am perfectly aware of that fact. I did not cause him any lasting damage – he will recover soon enough."[/blue] Unaware of the annoyance she held with herself for hesitating, he assumed it was aimed at him for sending an unforgivable at Dylan, although he wasn't entirely sure that was warranted either. Never before had he faced criticism for using severe spells; he had been praised for it, in fact, and thought such spells were fine to use when needed.
[blue]"How will using the spells make them lose their efficiency?"[/blue] he questioned, returning to the previous topic. [blue]"You will not always be there to protect your allies,"[/blue] he reasoned, still not including himself in that out of habit despite her earlier reminder. He turned to face her again as she asked about the potion, drawing it out of his pocket and handing it out to her. [blue]"A simple test – if you burn something made with shadow magic, dark red smoke is formed. It was with him on his return from the Shadow Realm."[/blue]

[blue]"Did not cause any lasting damage,"[/blue] she scoffed, parroting his words. [blue]"Yes, I am certain he is the absolute soul of discretion and will not find any way of using your attack against you with the other Lightfighters... or against me by association."[/blue] She shook her head slightly as her jaw tensed. [blue]"As though I did not already have enough problems with people questioning my leadership or searching for ways to justify their divisiveness,"[/blue] she muttered.
[blue]"Using the spells means exposing their existence... one cannot defend against a spell or work around it if one does not know that it exists. The intention was to keep them secret so they would work in a time when we truly needed them."[/blue] She paused, a scowl crossing her features. [blue]"Besides, the work was deemed classified by our government contact. I was not supposed to reveal their existence."[/blue] Her scowl deepened. [blue]"Even so, I should not have hesitated."[/blue]
She closed her eyes and allowed her head to fall back against the tree once again, wincing as a hairpin dug into her scalp. [blue]"I shall have to make a note of that,"[/blue] she replied. [blue]"I was not aware he brought anything with him when he returned."[/blue] That only made the idea of their secrecy more difficult to contemplate. [blue]"Is he in contact with Dark Phoenix? Is there any chance he might inform her that we were seen together?"[/blue] she asked, recalling the passionate embrace he had interrupted upon arriving in the Room of Requirement.

Another flicker of emotion crossed his face as she repeated his words, and he kept his head turned away. [blue]"But in doing so it will bring about the question of why, and thus bring up the matter of his attack on you. Also, there is the matter of the potion – he was under the influence of shadow magic. He was not in control of his actions, leading to provocation,"[/blue] he reasoned. A slight scowl passed onto his face before disappearing into neutrality at her last words on her leadership being questioned and the implication that his actions would help towards that. [blue]"Your allies should know better than to blame you for my actions,"[/blue] he eventually responded.
He saw the scowl on her face as she spoke about the spell, wondering if he should continue with the subject but understanding the factor of obeying a higher power, so to speak. [blue]"Perhaps you should just teach the Elemental Masters and Shadow Warriors,"[/blue] he suggested after a pause, thinking that she probably didn't want anyone even vaguely linked to Dark Phoenix to have that knowledge. Of course, if the Mage did manage to dig that far into his head he had much more valuable information like the identities of the lightfighters. [blue]"But warn them that they are only to be used as a last resort and to not tell anyone else. That way you can retain the secret for the most part but the spell is known to those who may need its protection if you are not there."[/blue]
Seeing her wince and having a fair idea of what was causing it – remembering how she had removed her hairpins when on the sofa at Paradox Hall – he reached over gently behind her head to find the offending hairpin and remove it, handing it to her as she spoke. [blue]"I do not believe he is in contact with her. However, I do not know that for certain,"[/blue] he admitted. [blue]"The effects should be wearing off soon since he is unable to take this potion... but I do not know how long that will take."[/blue]

"Your allies should know better than to blame you for my actions,"
[blue]"It does not matter. I should have protected him regardless. He is an Elemental Master. Besides, he has not done anything suspicious... and obviously the Mage cannot know that he is an Elemental Master or she never would have allowed him to return here."[/blue] She leveled a piercing gaze at him. [blue]"In any case, I am the one who brought you within our circle, so it makes perfect sense that I would be questioned for your actions... especially for actions I allowed you to carry out in my very presence."[/blue]
She scoffed at his suggestion to teach the Lightfighters. [blue]"Perhaps if I could manage a week without anyone being killed or maimed or carted off... or running off on some personal vendetta,"[/blue] she remarked crossly. [blue]"I would be happy enough to have them all show up to weapons training for a change,"[/blue]
She looked up as he removed a hairpin and fought the urge to smile. She was annoyed, and smiling certainly wouldn't fit with that emotion. She held the hairpin loosely in her hand for a moment before allowing it to fall to the ground, paying no attention to it as it landed softly in the grass. [blue]"I suppose all I can do is wait to see what happens,"[/blue] she remarked, her voice sounding tired and resigned. She'd already been through the entire lecture with Master Xiu in her head, asking why she had stood there and failed to respond to the pain of her ally... and had even taken some small amount of joy in his pained writhing. Definitely that wasn't something that would reflect well on her... and she couldn't really find any way in her own mind of justifying it, no matter what she had endured through Dylan over the past months.

Finally beginning to catch onto what D'rorah was upset about – not that he could really understand it – Kerridon listened to what she had to say, returning her gaze strongly and not flinching despite the implied blame he could hear in her words aimed at him, for putting her in this position. He felt a tinge of guilt bubble up inside before he immediately pushed it away. [blue]"You did protect him. Attacking you was suspicious, both physically and verbally. Besides, would they prefer that I had stayed under the Mage's rule?"[/blue] he reasoned, not seeing how or why the other lightfighters would deflect the blame upon her. She was the only person holding them together and yet somehow they could not see that. When he had attacked Dylan, some strange loyalty had made her defend him despite everything he had done to her. So far, with the possible exception of Caitlin after she had helped D'rorah to the hospital wing, Kerridon was not at all impressed with the other lightfighters.
His impression of them was plummeted further due to D'rorah's next comment about their weaknesses. Had he known all of this during that conversation in the bookshop in Diagon Alley he might have been slightly less convinced that the lightfighters had any chance of winning whatsoever. Of course, now he had a vested interest in winning due to D'rorah so he could hardly turn his back on them now. But it was certainly going to be a difficult battle to fight if this disparity between the lightfighters went on much longer. Perhaps his crucio had not been the best move, but then, he was not an Elemental Master. If they wished they could dismiss him from their group without any strings attached – except for that thread linking him to D'rorah, but few of them knew about that. The Elemental Masters and Shadow Warriors were all needed, which meant they certainly needed to stop fighting and to get on with focussing on the task of winning.
He kept his eyes on her as she dropped the hairpin to the floor and spoke in a resigned voice, not liking the sound of it. He shifted slightly, his arm moving around her shoulders and pulling her towards him slightly in an effort at silent comfort. He couldn't reassure her that everything would be alright, because for all he knew it wouldn't be. Justifying his choice of spell would probably also not be particularly helpful right now.

[blue]"No, of course no one would have preferred that,"[/blue] she replied shortly. She might not have survived after Dylan's humiliation in the common room if it hadn't been for Kerridon, and she well knew it. [blue]"The attack could just as well have been the writhings of a jilted lover... and I know some would write it off as such. Especially considering that no one else has noticed any change in his behavior."[/blue] She curled her hand into a fist and knocked at the trunk of the tree, feeling the pattern of the bark bite into her hand slightly.
She yielded to him as he moved an arm around her shoulders and pulled her towards him slightly. Her head came to rest on his shoulder. [blue]"I have trained since the age of five to have but one purpose... protecting Elemental Masters. Specifically my own, but any Elemental Master. That is my function... it is the singular reason for my existence. And I could not even perform that duty."[/blue] She tensed and shook her head, pushing away from Kerridon and moving to stand as she regarded what looked like a horizon in the magically enhanced chamber.
She had taken every loss, every death, quite personally. It was her job to protect them all. She was the one with the training... years of training... years of learning to be the leader and fighter that they would need to bring the group to victory. And yet, they accused her of not caring when Lightfighters died. She cared. She cared more than any of them would ever know, but she also knew that walking around weeping about what could or might have been would be completely and utterly useless. Suddenly enraged, she wanted to hit something. She wanted to tear something to pieces and utterly and completely destroy it. She wanted to do anything that didn't feel like useless self-pity. Pulling her wand from the sleeve in her pocket, she conjured her familiar training dummy and didn't even give it a fair chance to set itself before attacking in a fury of fists and feet. She paid little attention to fairness... she was fighting to be destructive... she fought as she would have if she faced Dark Phoenix herself. Perhaps it would even come to that. Perhaps she would simply have to be the one to take this whole matter into her hands and claw some way to at least a tentative victory. She drew her swords and dealt blow after calculated blow, easily besting the conjured sparring partner in her fury until she was left standing over a pile of tattered sawdust and swords. Her chest heaved with the exertion she had put forward and she stared down at the sparring tool in disgust, large strands of hair that had worked loose in the melee moving around animatedly in the constant breeze. She wasn't going to lose this war, and all the rest of them could be damned if they intended to stand in her way with their divisiveness and failure to communicate. By God, she would conjure Light and Yin herself if that was what it took.

Kerridon continued to silently disagree with what she was saying, but waited again until she had finished speaking before replying. She likely would not appreciate being interrupted right now... or ever, for that matter. [blue]"Some. Not all. There was no reason or obvious motivation for his attack or change in feelings towards you. And the potion shows he was under the influence of shadow magic."[/blue] He tensed slightly, automatically, when D'rorah hit the tree, and quickly decided that commenting on how she had previously told him not to stress her tree would not be appreciated.
At least she didn't pull away when he put his arm around her – at least, not at first. She rested her head on his shoulder and he turned his own head to rest lightly on top of hers, trying to supply what little comfort he could; although it really did appear to be very little. She was still blaming herself for not defending him straight away. Kerridon made a mental note that if Dylan needed attacking again, he would make sure to wait until D'rorah was out of the way. He didn't want to inflict this conflict on her again. About to speak away, he found her pulling away and stood with her, not following but simply watching her as she stood, turned away from him, and then summoning a training dummy, beginning to fight it.
He didn't intervene, sensing that she needed to get out her anger in some way. It actually seemed a rather productive method of dealing with anger; he might have to try it at some point. His previous methods of anger management weren't really an option any more. Finally she defeated it, and as she stared down at the dusty remnants he stepped forward slowly, not wanting to startle her. Setting a hand gently on her shoulder he kissed the back of her neck before murmuring in her ear. [blue]"I apologise for putting you in that position. But you did do your duty. You hesitated because you were unsure, but in the end your instincts went above your own reservations and you did your duty. Do not blame yourself for my actions."[/blue]

D'rorah heard Kerridon approaching behind her and sheathed her swords. The two blades slid into their holsters with a crisp ssshhhhhrick and a slight ring of metal. Feeling his hand come to rest at her shoulder, she forced herself to relax slightly, pushing the tension away from her shoulders as she continued to stare in disgust at the battered training dummy.
His lips at the back of her neck felt uncomfortably warm and sent a series of goosebumps fanning out over her skin. She shuddered slightly as he murmured in her ear and turned to face him as he finished speaking. [blue]"That sort of hesitation could have meant his death,"[/blue] she remarked solemnly, her eyes sad as she met his. [blue]"I know he has done enough to earn my anger... believe me, I wanted to be the one casting the spell in that first moment of hesitation."[/blue]
She inhaled slowly and leaned against him, feeling the support she missed so much when they were apart. [blue]"I understand why you did it... but I cannot condone it,"[/blue] she finished, raising her face slightly to meet his eyes once again. [blue]"No matter what he might do to me personally, he is an Elemental Master. We need him. And we need him to be whole and intact so that he is ready to be useful whenever the battle begins."[/blue] She closed her eyes as a breeze blew through the room, pushing her hair from her face.

Kerridon was relieved to feel her relax a little under his touch, although he could also feel the tension that had been there previously. The shudder that she let out also concerned him a little, as did the sad expression in her eyes when she turned, but he said nothing on the matter for now. Instead he listened to what she had to say, wrapping his arms around her and she leant against him, softly kissing her cheek. When he was sure she had finished, he spoke up.
[blue]"But it did not mean his death. And I believe that had it been in different circumstances, you would have reacted immediately. 'What if's are not going to help you win this war. If anything this would inspire you to protect him even quicker if there was a repeat of these circumstances. The way you are debating over it now shows that you are feeling guilty and would act differently next time."[/blue] Not that he had any intentions of attacking Dylan again in front of D'rorah... at least not with such severity. If the boy came at him again in the same manner he would not hesitate in sending other spells that would not hurt him in quite the same way.
[blue]"He is whole and intact,"[/blue] Kerridon repeated. [blue]"I know we need him, and he will be useful. His dislike for you should fade as he cannot take this potion and he will be useful for the battle when it comes. Even if his dislike does not fade, he knows as much as you do that Dark Phoenix winning will mean his death."[/blue]

D'rorah listened quietly as Kerridon spoke, still leaning against him as his words flowed over her. She couldn't agree that the lesson learned in this instance would somehow justify her lack of action, but she didn't wish to pursue the matter any further. It couldn't be changed now... nothing could change choices that had already been made.
She looked up, her eyes widening slightly as Kerridon mentioned the possibility that Dylan's "dislike" for her would fade now that he could not take the potion. She had never considered that Dylan's change in mood had some sort of outside cause. Perhaps that was mostly because a part of her had felt he was better off without her. [blue]"You think the potion might have caused all of this?"[/blue] she asked slightly incredulously, her eyes meeting his questioningly. She wondered what that would mean for her... whether it would change anything. Suddenly, having kissed Kerridon that evening at Paradox Hall became a thousand times more complicated.
But she was happy now. She had her kindred spirit... someone who could support her sometimes instead of always needing her to carry him. No more Astraeus to deal with. Even though they had to hide, even though they could not freely spend time together or thinking about one another, they felt right together. She tightened her arms around Kerridon and breathed deeply. Whatever the cause, she simply couldn't find it in herself to excuse everything that Dylan had done to her since his return... he hadn't struggled or fought against whatever influence there might be. And indeed, the potion might have had nothing to do with it at all.
She buried her head against Kerridon's chest and breathed deeply. [blue]"Let us not waste any more of our scant time together worrying about Dylan Cooper,"[/blue] she remarked quietly. [blue]"He has already taken more of my time and attention lately than I wish to allow him."[/blue]

Kerridon turned his head to look at her when she suddenly shifted at the mention of the potion having affected Dylan's temperament. She did not appear to have considered the thought at all – even when previously, he had mentioned that his stay in the shadow realm could be a cause of his behaviour. But no, her incredulity at his simple statement showed that she had been taken completely off guard by that. Seeing something in her eyes – what was it? doubt? regret? – Kerridon suddenly tensed, unsure whether he should have said anything at all on the matter. Surely she would have worked it out for herself anyway though...
An expression of some worry flickered across his face as he regarded her, seeing the cogs whir in her head... Although he was very determined not to lose her back to Dylan when the boy came to his sense and realised what he'd foolishly pushed away, his efforts would likely prove futile if D'rorah decided to forgive him because he had not had control of his actions. He was well aware of how much she had cared for him; that much had been obvious even to him through her reaction to his cruelty. [blue]"I believe so..."[/blue] he began, a little warily. [blue]"Your relationship with him was no secret, and having him act in such a way towards you seems like a good move on Dark Phoenix's part to attempt to hurt you. The potion shows he was under her influence in some way, and there is no other probably reason for his change in behaviour towards you."[/blue]
He relaxed again slightly as she leaned her head against him, kissing the top of her head light enough that there was a fair chance she had not felt it at all, and tightened his own arms around her just as she did similarly. He nodded slightly at her words, feeling somewhat relieved that she did not appear to be moving away just yet. He wasn't entirely sure how he would react if D'rorah eventually decided to return to Dylan, but he was fairly sure that it would not be positive. For now he stood there silently, content to just hold her for now and pushing away the stray thought that threatened that he might not be able to do something so simple in future if a reformed Dylan Cooper had his way.

D'rorah saw the worry flicker across Kerridon's face as he regarded her, and her mind immediately set to work conjuring the myriad possibilities for what might have caused it. She was certain it was to do with Dylan and his potion, given their current line of conversation.
[blue]"So he was captured because of me,"[/blue] she concluded quietly when Kerridon had finished speaking. [blue]"That seems the most likely cause... I told him when we first met it would be better if no one knew. But he could not abide by the separation..."[/blue] She took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment. [blue]"I am a danger to everyone around me... well, at any rate, he has already moved on to another endeavor, so perhaps he will be safe now."[/blue] Now she had Kerridon to worry about. He would be much better at taking care of himself. This was a war he had been fighting for years. He knew how it was played and he knew what the stakes were. He would find a way to keep himself safe, just as she would do the same for herself.
She felt the light kiss placed atop her head as Kerridon tightened his arms around her in return and closed her eyes. She wouldn't lose this too. She felt the emotional connection here. She needed Kerridon by her side. Perhaps he would not always be visible, but she would know he was there. She would feel it, even when circumstances kept them apart. He would be a partner, instead of someone to constantly protect. He would accept her darker leanings, rather than insist on pretending they did not exist. She never had liked the pedestal Dylan had put her on... it had seemed sweet at the time, but she hadn't felt it was justified. Kerridon would not cringe in horror the first time he saw her kill someone... and given that they were in a war, it was almost certain he would see such a thing. Dylan would have taken days to come to term with it... there would have been much crying and drama. She was starting to realize that she loved Kerridon, and the thought caused her to tighten her arms around him a bit more because, along with that realization, came the thought of what would happen if anything ever took him away from her. Losing Dylan had nearly killed her. To have it happen again would be simply unbearable... and she was afraid of what she might do if that day came.
Well, she resolved herself, she would just have to make sure that day never came. She looked up at Kerridon and reached a hand forward, carefully brushing a lock of hair from his face, her fingertips whispering over his lips as she did so. A smile pulled up at the corners of her lips for a moment before finally appearing. She had her restored text, and she had Kerridon... right now, that was all she wanted. [blue]"We should visit New York soon,"[/blue] she remarked quietly. [blue]"I need to check in on my home and see to some items in my father's library."[/blue] She didn't even realize the mistake. It would always be her father's library to her, the books he had spent a lifetime carefully collecting and cataloguing.

Kerridon stayed silent as she came to the conclusion that Dylan had been captured because of her, thinking it the most likely reason but unwilling to put more guilt on D'rorah.[blue]Foolish boy...[/blue] was his only reaction to hearing that Dylan had not wanted to be separated from her. He could understand the reasoning, but it was entirely unpractical and had led to this... His dislike of the boy intensified slightly as he came to the conclusion that the younger Ravenclaw's foolishness had meant his capture and subsequent change in behaviour... if he had simply done as D'rorah had told him, or simply not gotten involved with her in the first place, then she would not have had to go through the pain of losing him. The fact that his treatment of her was what had brought Kerridon and D'rorah together to start with did not cross his mind.
He just about managed to keep a scowl off his face when D'rorah referred to herself as an 'endeavour', although it was close. The attempt to turn away from this subject had apparently not worked very well and he did not reply to what she had said. He did not want to talk about Dylan Cooper any more than her, and as much as he wanted to reassure her that she was not a danger to everyone around her, he did so only with a short sentence with no mention of the boy. [blue]"I am more of a danger to myself than you could ever be,"[/blue] he told her, quite convinced that his change in allegiance – even if it had come by D'rorah's hand – was more dangerous to him than his relationship with her. He did notice how she still seemed concerned for his safety, but also said nothing on that.
A little reassured by her words that she would not go seeking Dylan out just yet, Kerridon continued to keep his arms wrapped tightly around her, pondering for a few moments on the unlikelihood of all this. He had felt respect towards D'rorah the first time he had met her, which had gradually developed into protectiveness despite still being on the opposite side of the war to her. That had been his main reason for trying to convince her of the logic in siding with Dark Phoenix; to try and prevent her getting hurt. Nearly all his life he had witnessed the pain – and caused some of it, too – that was aimed at enemies of the Mage. Indeed, it turned out he was a little too late in protecting D'rorah from that when the memory of his father's attack turned up. But now he was working with her rather than against her, his protectiveness was more justified... he just was not entirely how that had developed into... whatever this was. He was hardly one for feeling unnecessary emotion, but there was a definite attachment towards her that he had not felt for anyone since his sister's death.
He nodded at her words, happy to see a smile on her face now and returning it. He noticed the slip-up but didn't pay much attention to it; after all, he never went into the rooms at Paradox Hall or Taylor Manor that had belonged to other people during their time they were alive. He still referred to those rooms in his head as belonging to certain people. [blue]"That would be nice. I would like to visit your library,"[/blue] he told her, certain that it must be as large if not larger than the ones he now owned.

D'rorah shook her head slightly as Kerridon stated he was more of a danger to himself than she could ever be. She didn't really believe that was true. She was the one who had brought him to her side. She was the one now who seemed to be the focus of the Mage's wrath among the Lightfighters. Of course, she had no illusions that Kerridon would have been safe as a servant of the Mage. The whole reason she had hoped to bring him to her side was that she knew he would never survive in a realm wholly of Shadows... either the Mage would kill him quickly or the environment would decay and kill him slowly.
Ah well, it was best to move on from that line of thinking. They had spent enough time thinking about Dylan and the Mage. Of course, as fighting the Mage had been the whole focus of her life, she kept coming back to the subject repeatedly. She looked up again as Kerridon nodded at her suggestion of visiting New York. It didn't escape her notice that he called it her library... in fact, it caused her to realize that she had called it her father's library just before. [blue]"It is quite a sight,"[/blue] she remarked quietly.
She stepped back and regarded him for a moment. [blue]"How long exactly did you intend to stay this morning? I would not wish to keep you from anything important."[/blue] That wasn't necessarily true. She wanted to keep him there with her. She knew there was no telling when they might see one another again. Likely, it would be some time off in the future... whenever they could manage the getaway to New York. And who knew what might happen between now and then? Yet, she didn't wish to be selfish... and if he needed to leave, she wouldn't do anything to make that more difficult for him. They had to be careful and responsible in protecting their own safety, and that meant avoiding suspicion that anything was going on between them. She waited for an answer in quiet expectation, hoping he would stay at least a bit longer.

Kerridon noticed D'rorah shaking her head at his words and wasn't particularly happy with it, but as she didn't say any more on the matter he did not want to continue the conversation further. It was hardly an enjoyable topic for either of them; who was more at blame. Probably it would be a good idea to steer clear of that one for a while. Or... forever. Although forever was a strange notion to him... for years, 'forever' had meant the time until reaching the end of usefulness to Dark Phoenix. Technically that could still apply... if she decided he wasn't useful as a servant to her any more, he would most likely be dead twenty four hours later.
He let his arms drop when she stepped away, wondering what had caused it and discovering the reason a few moments later. [blue]"I have a lesson just before lunch,"[/blue] he told her, with an idea that she probably had a lesson before him, or at least other things she wanted to do this morning. [blue]"I can stay as long as you wish until then,"[/blue] he added. If she did leave earlier then he could easily find some homework or translation to occupy himself with; until then, however, he had no intentions of going anywhere. He didn't know when this trip to New York might be. [blue]"Do you need to be anywhere this morning?"[/blue] he asked, thinking she probably would.
