D'rorah payed little attention to the activity around her as she held her patronus. Just as she had decided it was satisfactory, she heard Professor Archer commenting on a job well done and awarding ten points to Ravenclaw. She released the spell, watching as the gryphon beat its wings and faded into a smoke-like cloud of ethereal light and disappeared. She noted that Bryan had also received points, while none of the others had yet to produce a patronus. Indulging the Professor's request, she readied herself and cast the spell a few more times. Each time, the gryphon appeared as summoned and placed itself protectively before her. After a moment, she released the spell and waited for Archer to give her her next task.

He wasn't paying attention to anyone else in the classroom and was flipping idly on through his textbook when he heard someone slide into the seat right next to him. His expression remained the same-- disinterested and idly waiting fro class to start as he kept his gaze down at his book, but allowed his awareness to slide over to the seat to his right. Slowly, he allowed his eyes to travel ever so slowly across his text book and onto his desk, then over to his hand granting him a bit more of a peripheral scope. When she spoke his name, his eyes widened and he turned his head immediately, his sight now relaxing on the form of Caitlin Collins.
"Yes Cait...It's me...good to see you today..." He said with a sort of friendly unease. He was hoping that this sort of reaction could have been avoided...but then again, what better way to completely disorient anyone suspicious of their alliance if his friends DID react in such a way. On on the top corner of his parchment, he began to write something down as Professor Archer began to speak. Indicating with his eye contact to Caitlin that she was meant to read it, he slowly turned the paper, but just a bit, so that she could read it better.
We'll talk later? was written in his unique blend of print-cursive. He sent her one last discrete look of acknowledgment and then he began flipping pages as Archer continued to explain the day's lesson.
Archer had assigned the 5th years of the class to begin reading and practicing the Finite and Finite Incantatem spells after casting simple hexes or jinxes on each other. This knowledge had been accumulated well before this particular class, in fact, Alessandro was fairly certain that he had learned those spells either the year prior or sometime circa that estimated period. They weren't terribly tricky in his opinion, but the Finite Incantatem spell did require a higher level of focus and concentration due to its potency to negate all spell effects in the area. He would be working with Dylan Cooper, a boy he was friends with and shared a dorm with, and Sam Kelley. There wasn't much knowledge packed away in Alessandro's mental library concerning Sam. From what he had witnessed since year one, Alessandro gathered him to be quite the social butterfly as he seemed to love talking to everybody. Having only conversed with him in the past a few number of times, Alessandro was quick enough of a judge of character to realize the boy had a good head on his shoulders, and why he never really received marks above mediocrity boggled him. He had observed natural talent in Transfiguration, something the two could relate in if necessary, and always felt that Sam could do so much better if he would just try a little bit more. Regardless, the most poignant fact that Alessandro should have known but did not (due to his absence) was the fact that this fellow 5th year, was their new Elemental Master of Water, the yin to his yang, or vice-versa.
Realizing he had been staring blankly at a page in his book (nowhere near the correct section for the charm they were to practice) Alessandro snapped out of it and traced the edge of the front cover with his index finger, wriggling it underneath the face of the leather-bound tome flipping it closed. Clearing his throat and picking up his wand (now his third since day one, but the best so far of the three) he turned his gaze over to where Dylan and Sam were already joining up. Making his way over to the two, he cleared his throat again, realizing that he was nervous. Not to perform the spell at any means, for he felt that this particular lesson would go over well for all three of the young wizards, but for the fact that he had not really had a chance to talk to Dylan yet.
Finally making his way over, from what seemed like leagues of desk-chairs, he smiled at the two when they acknowledged his presence. "Hi Dylan...Sam." He said to each of the boys acknowledging them with a nod and brief eye contact. "How is um....How is everything?" He was talking mostly to Dylan now with this inquiry, but he also looked at Sam too in case he felt like sharing.

Alessandro didn't seem to notice her when she first sat down, which worried her a little – had he lost his memories again? But then when she spoke he did turn, obviously knowing who she was. Apparently he has just been lost in thoughts and not paying attention. He seemed a little uneasy at seeing her, although he was friendly enough. Unfortunately, Professor Archer began the lesson mere moments later, but she glanced down at Alessandro's sheet of paper to read what he had written. She nodded at him, still in shock over his presence but reluctantly turning her attention to the professor.
She flicked to the page he specified, not particularly happy about the subject matter... she had an idea that she wouldn't like what they were doing today if it involved practical work – and it inevitably would. She had been unable to cast a patronus for quite some time, and doubted that today would be any better. Shifting her chair a little closer to the table so that Alessandro could get past, she continued reading and making notes, doing them as thoroughly as possible in an attempt to put off the inevitable. Maybe if she took enough time she would not need to do the spell because they would run out of time... but no, that was a futile hope. They had only just started. And soon enough, she found she had read the pages three times, her notes as thorough as they were going to get. She stood, seeing both Bryan and, unsurprisingly, D'rorah had cast their patronuses successfully. The other Ravenclaw boy at the back of the room, Kerridon, had not yet cast one. It didn't really help reassure her.
Rising from her seat, Cait began the familiar action of summoning a happy memory. Most of her happiest memories were now in India – the ones since then were tainted. She focussed on one she'd used before – flying over the city of Hyderbad on a magic carpet, seeing everything below her with her friends and tutor on the carpet with her. Happier times... simpler times... [yellow]"Expecto Patronum!"[/yellow] she called out, surprised to see a small wisp of silvery smoke emerge from her wand. But the comparison to her life now had taken its toll and it disappeared after barely a second, not forming into anything that would come even close to defending against a dementor or shadow. Of course, she had other methods to deal with those creatures, but after her recent brush with shadow form she thought she should probably stay away from that for now.

The Patronus Charm.
Her eyes rolled in their sockets with a disheartened feeling overwhelming her completely. Light magic. Perfect. It had been ages since she had practiced a Patronus Charm, and even then it took her a great degree of finding those repressed feelings of happiness that she once carried with her everywhere. It would be a sure struggle to dredge those memories up once more, for as of late, she was dour, angry, and deceitful.
She continued to drum her fingernails on the surface of her desk, even after the assignment had been given, as she contemplated things that could possibly make her happy. Defeating the lightfighters, rising up in the ranks to have Dark Phoenix take notice in her expertise, and flawless execution. Standing from her chair, she took a couple of steps back as she witnessed some of the other students attempt the charm. First off was D'rorah, of course the Ravenclaw Prefect was successful producing a fully corporeal Gryphon. Next was Kerridon, who failed to even produce so much as a light. Bryan Kelley succeeded in him and conjured a winged horse, and Ivy regarded his work with an approving glance before taking notice that Caitlin Collins was calling out the incantation.
A mere whisp of light, then it was gone. Ivy smirked to herself as she returned her attention to the front of the class. She took the pleasured feeling of seeing two students fail into account and added that to her "happy feelings" and began to channel that emotion into her wand as she was about to perform the spell.
"Expecto Patronum." She called out firmly with her wand pointed to the front. Like a siphon, she felt the energy sucked right through her being and into her wand, feeling the power well up at the tip with an illuminated tip of silvery light. [green]Keep it going...[/green] She egged on, thinking of more happy thoughts. The light got brighter and soon streaks of exuberant white light spiraled through the air taking the form of her patronus. It landed on the ground on all fours and stood there as if standing guard. It's light was pulsing as she was trying to sustain it, and it was nowhere near as bright as the other two successful casters, but at least she succeeded. Feeling like she had accomplished her part of the lesson, she allowed the wolf to evaporate into millions of orbs of light, then into nothingness.
With a pleased smile on her face, her shoulders popped up once as she made a small, high-pitched "Hmm" noise and then sat down at her desk, laying her wand in front of her and crossing her legs. Taking her left hand, she brushed back her hair once and then folded her arms together awaiting further instruction.

(OOC: apologies. I've been a bit out of sorts lately.)
Niobe smiled a bit nervously at Ben. She certainly didn't want to hex anyone or be hexed, but it was for class afterall.
"I'll hex you first." she said, pulling out her wand "I hope you don't mind."
She took a few deep breaths, going through her mind of what she wanted to cast. Then she thought of the perfect one. Fitting for someone such as Ben and definitely not destructive.
Lifting her wand so that he could know she was ready, she flicked her wrist and let out the command "Rictusempra!" sending a jet of silver light towards Ben.

To say that Sam found himself distracted at the moment would’ve been a severe understatement. However, it wasn’t his own trepidation that filled his mind, but that of his Shadow Warrior. There had been elation at the sight of Alessandro, but now that the task of casting a patronus had been announced, it was that concern that seemed to engulf everything. The Hufflepuff girl wasn’t reaching out to him, but then she didn’t exactly need to for him to sense something to apparent.
It hadn’t been more than a few seconds that he had been standing there with Dylan before the sound of Alessandro announcing his presence with the clearing of his throat found the Gryffindor’s ears. Sam nodded in response to Dylan’s statements, but delayed his response, seeing fit to now involve the third boy in the conversation. Though Sam did look to his fellow Elemental Masters, his eyes did not focus on them. Should one truly take the time to study the boy, they might notice the way he glanced at Caitlin from the corner of his eye.
”Hey Alessandro,” he replied in a bit of a distracted tone. ”It’s really good to see you back.” Under normal circumstances, Sam may have realized how odd the statement could have sounded being said to a person that he had never had much contact with. The small bit of relief that he could sense at the thought was not his own, but Caitlin’s. It was her memories and thoughts of the Elemental Master of Fire that caused those wisps of familiarity of flitter into his mind. It was still such a new feeling and the Gryffindor hadn’t learned how to fully deal with it. He could distinguish who’s memories were who’s easily enough, but the vividness with which they resided in his mind allowed them to impact his own thoughts and actions for the time being. It was for that same reason that he knew with certainty that he now stood here with two of his fellow Elemental Masters, a bit of knowledge he was sure enough that neither of them yet possessed. While the other boys certainly deserved to know such a thing, now wasn’t exactly the time to discuss such matters.
”I’m up for anything, defense or offense...” he said after a few moments, absentmindedly addressing Dylan’s inquiry as his eyes moved to Caitlin again just as she attempted to summon her patronus. Sam’s brow furrowed slightly at the sight of the silvery wisp at the tip of her wand. You’ve got this, Caity, I know you do. Don’t get frustrated. Just keep at it, I believe in you. The words shot through their shared link in the most encouraging tone that his mind could muster. With a deep breath, he concentrated on the mental link he shared with the Hufflepuff, taking hold of those memories she had shared of her happiness in India and trying to offer them to her now. He watched his Shadow Warrior closely, wanting her to succeed to badly. Always a team player, it just wasn’t in Sam’s nature to leave a team mate behind.

"I swear if this stupid twig backfires again I'm gonna throw it out the freakin' window," The rather agitated voice of one Liam Harvester growled as he trudged back down the stairs from the Gryffindor Dormitory to the third floor. He'd stepped wrong on his way down, the first time that morning, and the blade in his boot slipped, cutting a fine gash in his calf, which somehow must have caused his wand to react violently; catching his shirt on fire. Now that he'd redressed and was now only just down the hall from his first class of the day, D.A.D.A., he realized how late he really was, no one but the occasional lost 1st year and himself were the only ones he'd seen the whole way down.
In but a few moments he was in front of the door to the classroom, he sighed taking a hold of the door-handle and pushed the old door open. The room was filled with students, most with their wands out and his head dropped, the fact that he'd most likely have to use the twig disheartened him, it's a twig for heaven's sake, what power was there in twigs?!"Sorry I'm late Professor, I would have been on time but my wand back fired and I had to go get a new shirt," the words came rushed, and his gaze hadn't raised, although it was now focused on the contents of the open book-bag clutched in his left hand.
He was pretty sure he heard someone call out the words for a Patronus charm before he came in, it was a spell that he could do, albeit not well, but with a wand he'd probably wind up blowing himself up.He took a seat in a back corner, far enough away from everyone to not be a danger, but close enough to still see and hear what was going on around him. He dug his hand into his bag and pulled out the book for the class, opening it to the beginning of the section on the Patronus charm; along with this he retrieved a sheet of parchment and a quill and ink pot, setting them out on the desk. He sighed, his crimson gaze finally returning to the rest of the room. As far as he could tell he wasn't the only one who was going to be late, seeing as quite a few of his class-mates, mostly nameless faces to him, had yet to make themselves known. He dug into his back pocket and pulled out the flimsy little stick he was suppose to direct his 'natural magic' (whatever that was) with and set it on the desk just above the sheet of parchment.

He smiled at her reassuringly when she checked if it was okay that she hexed first, telling her with words a moment later. [red] "Fine by me. Fire away,"[/red] he grinned, taking a few steps back so he would actually have a chance to cast the protego after it had been cast. A little distracted by the patronuses showing up around the room, he cast his glance to the front where D'rorah had just cast perfectly first time – somehow that didn't surprise him, even with what little he knew of her. Glancing back at Niobe as she called out the spell, he was caught slightly off guard both by his distraction by patronuses and an appreciative grin for the spell he had chosen.
And so, he wasn't quite quick enough to cast it, only getting so far as [red]"Prote-"[/red] before the silver light slammed into him, causing him to double over with giggles overcoming all self-control. His wand dropped to the floor as he sank to his knees, unable to stop the laughter that overcame him and actually finding it quite painful to be laughing so much. Odd, that, the part of his brain that was still working rationally thought before it too was overcome by the spell's effects and instead descended into humour.

"Ben!"
Niobe rushed over towards him, panicked and a little scared. Had she cast the hex too quickly? She had tried to choose something harmless, but she hadn't intended for it to actually hit her target. They were just supposed to laugh at her choice of hex and be done with it.
"Professor Archer!" she called, turning toward him "Mr. Ellis...he was hit by my hex."
While a part of her thought the situation was ironic, and a bit funny considering, she still felt bad. She was sure that he was probably actually amused by this situation, but she wasn't sure if she'd enjoy laughing so hard.
"Oh, Ben...I'm so sorry..." she said softly.

Seeing Alessandro finally making his way over, he thought to give him a small sort of smile but found that kind of expression of happiness was quite beyond him at the moment. Darko could very well feel less than welcome, receiving no kind of gesture from a friend, but that was hardly one of Dylan's priorities right now. "Hi Alessandro," was all he offered, in return to the greeting he himself had received. As Sam stated he didn't mind what he did first, Dylan figured they would all get a turn anyway and shrugged. "Fine..." he said non-comittally, casting the tiniest of glances toward D'rorah as she cast a perfect Patronus yet again. Turning his eyes away from her with a bit of effort, he took his wand into his steady right hand and pointed it toward Sam. "Okay... you ready? I'll just cast the Twitchy Ears hex, nothing too dramatic," he said quietly, but loud enough for him to be heard over the general din of the classroom.
"Alessandro, you want to be ready to cast Finite?" he questioned, before starting. Normally he wasn't this... for lack of a better word, authorative, but considering they simply had to get on and do it and no-one seemed to mind what really happened, it was simply easier to make decisions this way. If they had an issue with it, no problems, they could just change whatever needed changing. Clearly indicating his wand, he pointed it directly at the Gryffindor boy and spoke the incantation quietly. "Auris velico."

Caity was all set to give up after her first failed attempt, despite it being better than usual – she hadn't been able to perform the spell correctly for months now, why would a small wisp of light make any difference? About to sit down again, she suddenly heard Sam's voice echo in her head, making her jump a little. She was still not used to mental communication – when Mallan had used it, or D'rorah, it had only been on occasion and not regularly.
She glanced over at him grudgingly, not believing that she could do it but staying on her feet to at least show him she couldn't do such a thing. She felt the happy memories of India appear again, helped along by Sam's push and concentrated on them, pulling in the image of seeing Alessandro alive again and focussing on it all. [yellow]"Expecto Patronum!"[/yellow] she called out, and after a few moments that wisp of light appeared again. Then the boy's laughter sounded out across the classroom and she lost her concentration, and Alessandro's face in the classroom turned into the image of him falling. The light disappeared almost immediately and she sighed, shrugging slightly at Sam and sitting back down. [yellow]See?[/yellow]

Sam tossed a small nod in Dylan’s direction as he stepped up and took the initiative in getting things started with their group. In those few moments that he waited to be the target of the hex, the boy pondered the elemental trio, wondering how they would get along as allies once the other two learned of his recently discovered position. The three certainly seemed to be mesh well enough in this limited interaction. Sam realized that he was probably the most verbose of the group from what he had observed of his classmates over the years, but he wasn’t a dramatic boy, usually able to go with the flow on things as his sports participation had taught him over the years. Surely they would work well together and possibly even end up being friends, he told himself. The only question now remained on how they would receive the news. Hopefully it wouldn’t be with pity as others already had. It wasn’t that Sam had a problem that people cared enough for his safety to pity his involvement in the Shadow Wars, but it would be refreshing to see a person happy and receptive to the news of him being a part of the group.
As he awaited the impending hex from Dylan, the Gryffindor again glanced over to Caitlin as she relented and attempted another go at the patronus incantation. He smiled a bit in her direction, offering up what encouragement she may draw from the gesture if any. He wasn’t disappointed in her and he made as much apparent through their link. She has stumbled, but she had gotten back up, dusted herself off, and tried again. That was enough for Sam, to see her willing to give it another try and not just blow him off. Again he concentrated on that shared link and spoke to his counterpart telepathically. It’s alright, Caity. You didn’t fail, you just found two ways not to cast the spell. We’ll work on it in time, just don’t convince yourself it’s impossible. As hopelessly idealist as he may have sounded in the Hufflepuff’s mind, Sam meant every word of what he had said. They were in this together and he had a vested interest in her, not only for his protection but also, and more importantly in his mind, her own.
Just as soon as the words had left his mind in route to Caitlin, the familiar feeling of the twitchy ears hex assailed the boy. At first he just glanced to Dylan in response to the sensation that had become somewhat familiar in his ears in the castle. Being a target of this spell was nothing new between the playful nature of the Gryffindor students in their time away from classes and those late night sessions of impromptu spell study in the common room. A few seconds later, a small grin found it’s way to his lips and he chuckled against the tickling feeling. Sam scratched at his right ear in response and laugh again, being his usual good sport self at the prospect of being hexed.

He was somewhat jealous that he had to practice the Finite spells instead of practice his patronus, but upon seeing Caitlin struggle to perform hers, he immediately felt differently. He wondered what exactly was going on inside her mind that she couldn't cast her patronus? He was sure he had seen her cast one properly in the past, though he wasn't sure. He wasn't even sure if he could conjure his properly, for, the last time he had summoned his full-embodiment of light protection, it had changed forms from a stallion to a phoenix.
Dylan didn't really give him the welcome he had naturally thought would come, though he didn't really blame him. Alessandro supposed he would be a little short with him too if he had been so dodgy lately. Not really changing his expression, he kept a somewhat mirthful tone to it as he acknowledged Sam, who did welcome him back with inviting words. It was no secret that he had been gone, although, the welcome did cause Alessandro to tilt his head slightly and shift to a "pleasantly-confused" expression for a moment.
"Thank you Sam, indeed, it's good to be back." He said, allowing a smile to creep upon him. He turned his sights back to Dylan still smiling, silently wondering if maybe something was bothering him? Then he remembered his thoughts as he walked into class, noting that D'rorah and Dylan were in fact not seated together as he remembered them to be. Frequently. Those thoughts and questions would be better suited for another time and place, though, he thought and focused his attention now back to Dylan who had taken the lead in the assignment.
He hated the Twitchy Ears Hex. He was very thankful that it was Sam that would be getting all twitchy and not him. The fact that he could not stop his ears from twitching bothered him, as he found the sensation annoying and pain-inducing after the effects lasted long enough. Then, after the hex would clear, the after-effects would linger on, giving him the sensation that they were still twitching, but were actually not. Nodding to Dylan in acknowledgment that he would cast Finite He readied his wand, the 10 and 3/4" Blackwood now pointing to the core of Sam Kelley.
Dylan spoke the incantation and soon after, Alessandro was able to notice Sam's ears going crazy. Oddly enough, Sam seemed to like the sensation, or not really mind it at all for he laughed a little. Watching the boy scratch his ear, Alessandro gave him a look that questioned whether he was ready or not to have the hex removed. As he received the sign from Sam, he cast the charm.
"Finite." He spoke in a firm tone, but not too loud. The tip of his wand lit up and glowed brightly and sort of "popped" dispersing the light, and thus negating the effects of the Twitchy Ears Hex. Lowering his wand, he looked back and forth between the two boys. "Well done then." He said with another smile. "I guess I'll be the victim this time, and...Dylan can cast Finite? And you can cast the jinx? Just please don't do the Twitchy Ears Hex." He said looking back and forth between the two, setting his sights on Sam finally.

Seeing the students gradually pairing up where they needed to, the first spells were finally being cast by the younger years. The older students, too, following D'rorah and Bryan's attempts, were trying the Patronus charm for themselves. Seeing a small silvery wisp produced from the female Hufflepuff prefect and a shadowy grey Patronus from the sixth year Slytherin, he smiled lightly. Caitlin seemed defeated even though she had produced something; a lot of people never could, and Ivy seemed to feel that her one attempt was enough. "Yes, well done Miss Halliwell, perhaps you could try again and make it stronger?" he suggested in a friendly tone. She had done very well to cast it, and in fact he was surprised that even three out of the class had managed it so far. It was afterall very complex magic.
Seeing Alessandro move to the other fifth years and them all beginning to decide amongst themselves who should begin, he flicked his attention to Niobe Blakes, who was just about to cast her hex onto Ben. She was quite successful, but the Gryffindor boy seemed to be a bit slow in responding, and as a result his shield charm failed; or rather, never had the chance to succeed. He fell to the floor laughing and the Ravenclaw girl seemed to become a bit panicked, calling to him for help. Smiling happily, he flicked his wand toward Ben and the effects of the spell immediately ceased. "Very good, try again you two," he said happily to them, before turning his attention elsewhere.
As he reverted Ben to his normal cheery self, as opposed to overly-cheery self, a student entered the classroom. Recognising him as the Gryffindor, Liam, he raised his eyebrows in slight surprise at the latecoming. He did not look angry by any means, such an emotion was rare for Alex Archer, but he smiled only lightly as the boy explained himself. "Good gracious, understandable, Mister Harvester," he said cheerily, wondering vaguely what he had done that needed his shirt being changed. As he strode to the back of the classroom and took a seat, he raised his voice so it could carry relatively easily over the general noise in the classroom at this point. "You'll be working on the Patronus charm today, as you might be able to see. Just read the section on it and then get right into casting!" Normally relatively annoyed by tardiness, he would not punish him for something so unforseen.
Noticing that after casting her Patronus a few more times successfully, D'rorah re-took her seat, he smiled brightly at her. "Excellent work, Miss Philosophy. Perhaps you'd like to try it wordlessly?" he suggested lightly, unsure as to whether or not she was accomplished in that particular field.

Straight away, Sam's ears began to react rather well to the hex he had cast, and Alessandro was directing his wand at the Gryffindor among them. Observing more out of academic interest than any particular curiosity, he noted that his dorm-mate performed the counter-spell perfectly first time; all twitching of the ears stopped effective immediately. "Well done," he said quietly, his voice not revealing any kind of admiration or real congratulations; simply an acknowledgement. Clearly, he was slightly pre-occupied today, though thankfully so far it had not affected his spellwork. "Fine by me," he said lightly as Alessandro suggested the next course of action. His wand at his side, he waited for the hex from Sam before levelling his own wand at Darko.
