Shane flinched away automatically as he felt D'rorah reach out behind him, almost preventing him from getting back up, but he managed to scramble back up nevertheless, avoiding her hands. Although he didn't really think she was going to hurt him or consciously avoid her, it was an automatic reaction to stay away from anyone reaching out for him.
He listened intently to her words, and Tommy also leaned forward eagerly when a sudden 3D depiction on the sun and earth appeared before him, checking all the details with wide eyes. Nick, on the other hand, was leaning back in his seat and staring out of the window, with no interest in how it could be morning here and evening in Scotland. The scenery outside was not particularly interesting though, and soon his eyes turned back to examine the strange, pale girl who had taken them from Hogsmeade.
Shane nodded with a smile as she asked if he understood. [yellow]"I get it, I think. Thank you,"[/yellow] he smiled up at her, leaning back in his seat and turning his head so he could still watch her as she spoke. [yellow]"Could I have breakfast and then go to bed? Is it different food here?"[/yellow] he asked eagerly, remembering that one of their neighbours had come back from France with tales of frogs' legs and snails. He hoped that the food here would be nicer than that, at least.
He wasn't sure he liked the mention of a strange man looking after them, though, and Nick obviously had similar thoughts. [green]"We can look after ourselves,"[/green] he informed her from where he was sitting, still staring across the carriage at her. [green]"We don't need someone to tuck us in at night and tell us a bedtime story,"[/green] he adds derisively.

D'rorah noticed Shane's flinching and felt stupid for not considering the fact that the Bryces wouldn't be accustomed to hands reaching out to help, rather than hurt. Luckily, he managed to keep himself righted in spite of it.
She noticed that Tommy seemed especially interested in the miniature astronomy lesson... or at least, in the depiction of earth and sun she conjured to demonstrate what she was saying to Shane. Nick, it seemed, was content to ignore the information as he watched D'rorah. She knew she looked odd... that much had been clear to her for some time now. And it was a fact that was reinforced every time she happened to pass by a mirror in the girls' showers.
Shane seemed the most interested and enthusiastic of the bunch. She appreciated his reaction to her explanation of time around the world. [blue]"You are welcome, Mister Bryce."[/blue] she replied as he thanked her. At his next question, she actually smiled a bit. [blue]"Yes, you may have breakfast and then go to bed. The food may be a bit different from what you are accustomed to eating. Typically, breakfast here is a savory soup of some sort with vegetables and the like, with warm broth... but there are also more traditional biscuits... scones, that is,"[/blue] she corrected, remembering that the boys' food vocabulary would be slightly different from her own Americanized vocabulary. [blue]"And I am certain there will be cereal... and perhaps eggs if the local chickens are doing well."[/blue]
Nick's comment earned a slight nod. [blue]"Yes, I see that you have all kept well together. I am impressed by your brotherhood... Master Xiu, however, is a good guide to have along the way as you are looking after yourselves."[/blue] She smirked slightly. [blue]"In any case, I cannot picture him... tucking anyone into bed with a story."[/blue] She paused slightly. [blue]"You will all have rooms near one another... There are typically only two to a room, though he may make an exception for the three of you if you all wish to do so."[/blue]
D'rorah closed her eyes for a moment as the carriage rocked slowly along on its way to the Monastery. The children weren't the only ones who had had a long day... she wondered if she might not stop into her old room for a nap as well. After all, she wanted to make certain the Bryce brothers settled in properly, right? Relaxing for a bit, she breathed deeply and settled back against the seat of the carriage, her ears alert for any approaching danger as her eyes and body rested.

Shane grinned happily as she said that yes, he could have breakfast and then go to bed. Normally they did have breakfast because it was so cheap and easy, but never twice in one day! His eyes widened as she began listing all the foods that would be available, and Nick also perked up at the mention of all that food. Tommy was less surprised or impressed, being used to Hogwarts meals now and having been built up a little now, but he well remembered his own reaction at his first few times eating there.
[yellow]"Soup? And scones, and cereal, and eggs?"[/yellow] Shane repeated, the shock clear on his face. [yellow]"That's not breakfast, that sounds like lunch or teatime! Breakfast is cereal!"[/yellow] he told her, as if she didn't understand the concept.
[red]"No Shane, you can have more than just cereal for breakfast,"[/red] Tommy informed him from across the carriage. [red]"They do at Hogwarts."[/red]
[yellow]"Oh... well... that sounds great then!"[/yellow] Shane says happily, sighing contentedly as he leans back in the seat. [yellow]"Did you say there were biscuits as well?"[/yellow] he asks eagerly, having always loved that particular food himself.
Nick continued to frown at D'rorah's words. [green]"Just because he won't, doesn't mean other people there won't try,"[/green] he argued. [green]"And why do you call him 'master' all the time anyway? I'm not calling anyone master. No one's bossing me about,"[/green] he stated firmly with a scowl, crossing his arms and also leaning back into the seat. Tommy frowned across at him, elbowing him lightly as if to tell him to behave. Shane also stared across at Nick in confusion, unsure as to why he was being so difficult towards the person who had taken them away from their dad. He nodded firmly at the mention of everyone being in the same room, as did the other two boys. Although at home Tommy had a separate room in the attic, both Shane and Nick – although Nick would firmly deny it – had sneaked up to his room at one point or other to sleep there instead.
Shane's eyes began to slip closed as the carriage made its way towards the monastery, the excitement of the day wearing down on him. His head began to tilt until it rested lightly on D'rorah as he drifted off, much to the chagrin of Nick to see his brother leaning on a stranger like that, even one who had taken them away from their dad.

D'rorah saw Shane's and Nick's enthusiasm when she mentioned food and wondered what they had eaten at home. Apparently the father hadn't even bothered to feed them properly most of the time if all they thought that a few eggs and a scone were food for lunch or dinner. Thinking of it, she supposed Shane looked a bit underbuilt... it was easier to subjugate someone who was hungry, she supposed.
She shook her head slightly as Shane's question about biscuits. [blue]"What I call a biscuit, you call a scone... or at least, that is the closest approximation I have been able to make,"[/blue] she added.
She looked over at Nick. [blue]"I have trained with Master Xiu for many years. He is a very wise man, and he is currently... sort of like the Headmaster of the monastery where the school is located. He is a Master of the Order of Light. But you will learn more about that while you are here. There are many people where we are going... monks, scribes, students, Masters... Master Xiu is the head of all of them. It is his job to see to the safety and harmony of all who reside within the walls of the monastery."[/blue] She didn't intend for them to be brought into the Order... they were far too young in her opinion, but they would at least know of what it was now that they would be surrounded by the scribes of the Order and the monks who trained as fighters. Far better than any school, they would learn more than academics here... they would even become part of the community within the monastery walls. That was, if they opened themselves to it.
D'rorah's eyes opened as she felt something settle against her. Looking down, she saw it was Shane. He looked so peaceful with is eyes closed as he drifted off to sleep. She couldn't imagine how anyone would be able to inflict harm on such a trusting and sweet natured boy. But then, as she reminded herself, evil existed in many forms in the world. Protecting these boys was just as much her job as any village she had saved from Shadows.
Closing her eyes once again, she set her arm around Shane protectively. She didn't know why she did it... only that it seemed the right thing to do.
As she felt the carriage slow, her eyes immediately opened and she looked up. The vast walls of the Monastery were upon them, a light sand color against the backdrop of rocky desert. Master Xiu waited for them at the main gate as the carriage rolled to a stop. "D'rorah," he greeted warmly. She stepped down from the carriage and bowed. [blue]"Master."[/blue] she greeted in return. He eyed the children in the carriage with her. "And these must be the young men of whom you spoke." D'rorah nodded. Xiu shifted his gaze to the three brothers. "I imagine you are all hungry and tired... we have hot meals and a clean room with freshly-made beds waiting for you. Welcome."
He smiled a wise old smiled and turned to lead the way into the dining hall. "And you, my daughter... we have many things to discuss. But first, food and rest for you all."

Shane frowned slightly in confusion at her words. [yellow]"Why do you call it a biscuit if it's a scone?"[/yellow] he asked. He could tell that she said words slightly differently to him, but not enough that he could tell she was from another entirely different continent.
[red]"Well if he's the headmaster we won't hardly see him,"[/red] Tommy said, as if reassuring Nick. [red]"I hardly ever saw the headmistress at Hogwarts. But what's the Order of the Light?"[/red] he asked, turning his attention to D'rorah. He had never heard any mention of anything like that in History of Magic, or Astronomy, or any of his other subjects. But it certainly sounded important.
The glare Nick was sending across the carriage as Shane fell asleep leaning on D'rorah intensified and turned to her as she looked down at him and then put her arm around him. What was she doing? Who did she think she was, putting her arm around him as if she was his sister or something, or his mother... They didn't have a sister, it was just the three of them, and there was no way she could ever replace their mum.
His thoughts were interrupted as the carriage slowed and his eyes turned to look out of the window to see the walls ahead. Shane also stirred, smiling as he felt D'rorah's arm around him before his eyes flickered open and he pulled away slowly to peer out of the window, his head next to Tommy's who was doing similarly. Tommy helped Shane down again then waited for Nick before climbing out himself, his eyes turning to the old Chinese man before them and holding Shane's hand tightly, not wincing as his younger brother's nails dug into his skin. He nodded without speaking as he asked if they were hungry and tired and after a moment's hesitation took a step forward to follow him into the building, pulling Shane along with him and keeping close to Nick.

D'rorah looked down at Shane. [blue]"I am from America. There, we have things called biscuits... they are more like a scone than anything else I have been able to identify in English cuisine."[/blue]
D'rorah didn't bother to correct Tommy's statement about seeing Master Xiu. Perhaps they wouldn't see him around too much, but it was more likely that he'd be around. [blue]"The Order of Light is an organization established to protect our realm, and to maintains the balance between Light and Dark,"[/blue] she replies thoughtfully. [blue]"You will learn more about it the longer you are here... but that is the general idea."[/blue] She wasn't going to get into legends or discussions about Shadow Warriors or Elemental Masters. They would hear about all of that in classes anyway.
She didn't notice the glare from Nick as she and Shane sat together on the carriage seat. Her arm around him felt right... and Shane didn't seem to have any objections, so that was enough for her.
Master Xiu and D'rorah led the way to a small kitchen with a round table set for four. "During regular mealtimes, meals will be served in the dining hall... however, I thought this more appropriate for our small breakfast gathering," he explained. "Please, have a seat."
D'rorah took one seat as Master Xiu took the seat next to her, the one without a place set. The other three already had plates and flatware set out with napkins. D'rorah watched as a steaming pot of vegetable soup was set out, along with a tray of scones and scrambled eggs. There was cereal and milk set out as well, just in case the boys wanted it. "Please, help yourselves," offered Master Xiu, gesturing to the food on the table.

Shane perked up a little as he looked ahead to see a kitchen approaching, glancing up at Tommy with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety at being in this new place with apparently nice people and lots of food. He was comforted by his older brothers being there but still nervous enough to not even contemplate letting go of Tommy's hand. Nick edged a little closer to the pair as they walked further within the monastery, but still not taking his brother's hand even when offered.
As they entered the kitchen all three boys were immediately aware of the smells that pervaded their senses from all the other pans that were cooking food for the actual breakfast that would be served soon enough for the rest of the monastery's occupants. Everything D'rorah had mentioned could be made out, as well as a few other varied aromas none of the boys recognised. Shane climbed up onto the seat next to D'rorah, which was to be honest a bit too big for him. Tommy sat on his other side, with Nick next to him. He sent a small glare up at the Chinese man as if to tell him off for daring to choose the seat next to him before his attention was caught by the food on the table.
He reached out for a spoonful of scrambled egg before Master Xiu had told them to help themselves and generally ignored the man as he grabbed something of everything before tucking in hungrily. Shane and Tommy did similarly, although both waited until permission had been given. As Shane took a bite of cereal, his expression brightened considerably. [yellow]"This milk tastes nice! And it doesn't smell, either,"[/yellow] he noted to Tommy with a smile, not used to milk that was actually in date – or cereal, for that matter. [yellow]"And the cereal's properly crunchy!"[/yellow] he exclaimed, taking another eager bite as his stomach began to grumble again. Tommy ate a little more slowly, although he had eaten just as little as them for dinner – he had missed it at Hogwarts while with his brothers. Then again, he had had a large lunch and breakfast to fill him up, and was used to this sort of food.

Master Xiu couldn't help but notice the way the boys drew closer to one another as they made their way through the Monastery. D'rorah noticed as well, but made no comment about it. After all, with what they had all been through, it was to be expected... they would see each other as being the only people they could trust or count on.
She smiled over at Shane as he took the seat next to her, wishing only that she'd been able to help them all much sooner. Nick, of course, had little manners... she'd already noticed that he was the most defiant of the three... the angriest, perhaps. She hoped that would change with the new environment and the chance to be around people who were concerned for his well-being. The stern but understanding guidance of the monks would likely be good for him... perhaps he would come to see that anger and violence weren't the only emotions of which adults were capable.
It was Shane's excitement over the cereal and milk that wrenched at her heart once again. Surely, someone must have noticed the way the children had been treated over the years? And yet, if they had, it seemed no one had bothered to do anything about it. She sighed quietly as she glanced at the food, not making any move to put any on her plate. Xiu knew her well enough to leave the matter be for now. If he argued with her about eating in front of the others, she'd only be more stubborn about it.
Xiu leaned over to speak with her quietly, leaving the boys in peace to enjoy their dinner.
D'rorah nodded slightly. [blue]"Yes, we are planning to come for the summer... I will bring as many as I can convince to come."[/blue] She looked down at her hands in her lap for a moment, obviously disappointed in herself as she spoke again. [blue]"I have had... some difficulties in leading the others. I have not been effective in my position,"[/blue] she remarked quietly.
Xiu put a hand on her shoulder. "You have done as well as you could with your situation and resources, my daughter. You need more support... and I will be sending that to you when you return this time."
D'rorah looked over at him with a questioning gaze. She felt like a failure as far as leading the Lightfighters was concerned... no one wanted her as a leader, few of them bothered attending training sessions when she had them... some of them seemed to randomly disappear for days or weeks at a time. She never knew when to actually worry about any of them, as unexplained absences seemed to be almost normal behavior for some.
He smiled over at her kindly. "Rest for a while, we will talk about these things later. I have other important things to discuss with you while you are here."

As Shane continued to munch happily on the fresh cereal and milk and Tommy kept an eye on his brothers as he also ate, Nick slowed as his eyes turned suspiciously towards the two adults at the table. He had noticed D'rorah's smile for Shane as he sat next to her and didn't like it at all... She should just leave him alone, he didn't need anyone except for his brothers. And he certainly didn't need her mothering him and making him all attached then just leaving... which apparently was exactly what she was going to do. Good. No need for her to stay any longer than necessary.
[green]"When are you going?"[/green] he asked, interrupting their conversation, then blinking as he processes something else. [green]"Wait, you're coming back?"[/green] he asks in alarm. [green]"Why?"[/green] he demands. His eyes turned to glare at Tommy as he felt a kick under the table.
[red]"Be nice!"[/red] his brother hissed across the table, in a voice so quiet it was as if he was hoping D'rorah and Master Xiu wouldn't hear him, impossible as that was at such a small table. [red]"Sorry, Nick's just tired,"[/red] he attempted to apologise for his brother, who glared across at him and kicked him under the table in return. [green]"No I'm not!"[/green]

"When are you going?"
"Wait, you're coming back?"
D'rorah listened to the exchange between brothers with an arched brow. [blue]"Of course I will be returning,"[/blue] she replied simply. [blue]"You are not the only ones for whom this is a safe place. I have duties to tend to here, and I have other things which need tending as well."[/blue]
She looked over at Tommy. [blue]"I understand you are all tired,"[/blue] she replied with a nod. [blue]"You have all had a very long day, and I know a lot has changed for you all very suddenly."[/blue]
She looked back to Nick. [blue]"Rest assured that I will not allow any harm to befall you now that you are here. I intend to remain long enough to see that you are all properly settled in and then I will return to Hogwarts. I will be here again in the summer, after classes have finished to train with the others, and I may stop in from time to time to ensure that all is well here."[/blue]
Master Xiu stood, as it seemed the boys had finished eating. "Well, I believe everyone would benefit from some rest and then I will have one of the monks see that you are shown around... and then we can deal with fitting you all into classes as well." He gestured to D'rorah. "Come, my child, you have had a long day as well... you should rest also,"
D'rorah nodded and rose obediently. [blue]"Follow me, I will show you to the room that has been prepared for you. I will have the room directly adjacent for this visit, so I will be close by in the event you require anything."[/blue] She lead the way out to the corridor, making a few twists and turns before ending up in a courtyard in front of a small row of dormitories, showing the boys to one door with a room containing three beds and a restroom. [blue]"You will find clothes inside to sleep in, and any necessary sundries,"[/blue] she explained quietly as she opened the door to their room.

Nick scowled a little at D'rorah's matter-of-fact tone when she stated that of course she would be returning, mimicking it a little in his head. Tommy nodded at her words, elbowing Nick in an attempt to make him behave. It didn't work, and instead simply caused him to stare across at his brother. Both were the same height now, although Shane was still short enough to have to tilt his neck to look up at his brothers, as he was doing now with a slightly daunted expression due to their arguing, however small it might be.
Nick snorted derisively as D'rorah promised that no harm would befall them, both at her phrasing and the promise itself. He had few doubts about how this new arrangement would turn out. He would do something to make someone angry, as he always did, and then they would take it out on him with their fists, or feet, or any handy item lying nearby that could be used to wallop him or his brothers. His eyes widened though as she mentioned staying until they were settled. [green]"We can settle ourselves, we don't need babysitting!"[/green] he protested loudly, interrupting her again. [green]"You're gonna stay for the whole summer?"[/green] he demanded with wide eyes and a fallen expression. He didn't want Shane getting any closer to her than he was already managing. He ignored Tommy's glares again and smirked slightly to himself when Master Xiu referred to D'rorah as a child.
Shane jumped down from his chair after grabbing two scones and stuffing them into his pockets, hoping that D'rorah and Master Xiu hadn't seen his antics. He didn't want them to think that he was a bad child like his dad had. But he also didn't know when or what the next meal might be, and with all that food out on the table it seemed sensible. He stepped in between Tommy and Nick, slipping his hands into theirs as D'rorah led the way.
[green]"Why are you staying next to us, we can get anything we need ourselves,"[/green] Nick argued along the way. He was distracted though as they reached the room. Shane immediately released his brothers' hands and ran forward to jump on top of the bed directly next to the window. [yellow]"This is mine, bagsy!"[/yellow] he shouted out with a grin, already settling down comfortably on top of it and grinning as he felt the freshness of the sheets, gathering them up around him. [yellow]"It doesn't smell!"[/yellow] he called happily across to his brothers.
Tommy stood back, waiting for Nick to choose, but Nick was glaring at Shane and stepping towards him. [green]"I sleep by the window, you know that! I always do!"[/green] he says determinedly, scowling down at his younger brother. Shane's face fell and he sighed miserably, dropping the sheets and moving off the bed. Tommy sighed, stepping forward. [red]"You don't have to move, Shane. Nick's old enough to know he can't break the rules of bagsy,"[/red] he said, turning to look at Nick. Shane hesitated, one foot on the floor and his other still resting on the bed, a little precarious in his position.

D'rorah's eyebrow arched sharply in response to Nick's snort when she spoke. She held her tongue for now, giving him far more leeway than she would have given any other young trainee of his age. She was trying to be understanding, as she knew Master Xiu would be... D'rorah wished she knew how he always managed to discern when it was appropriate to be indulgent and when it was necessary to be stern.
[blue]"Yes, Mister Bryce, I intend to be here for the entirety of the summer,"[/blue] she replies. [blue]"This is a home to me too..."[/blue] At least, the only people left alive who were anything like family to her lived here, so it was the closest thing she had to any sort of true home.
As Shane stuffed scones into his pocket, D'rorah and Master Xiu both saw, but made no mention of it. After all, if the boy was excited about crunchy cereal, fresh scones were likely as good as diamonds to him. However, Master Xiu did speak up. "Oh yes, before I forget. There is a meal at noon... though I expect you will all be asleep at that time, so there will be something waiting for when you all wake up. Though, I hope everyone will save room for dinner, as I hope to see you all there. I have some very important announcements to make tonight."
D'rorah wondered what the announcements were, but found the thought interrupted as Shane raced into the room, claiming the bed near the window. She watched with some consternation the exhange between brothers, wanting to step in to mediate, but stopping short as Master Xiu's hand reached out and touched her arm, signaling her to remain silent. He wanted to see how this would work out if left to its own devices.

Nick sighed in annoyance as D'rorah said it was her home as well. Not that he really thought of this as his home yet, but he was intelligent enough to realise that was what it would become if they were supposed to be staying here. Hopefully this place was big enough that they could just avoid her. He wasn't entirely sure why he disliked her so much, especially since she'd taken them away from their father, but he'd never really liked adults and something about her – maybe how clingy Shane was being towards her for some reason – made him want her to stay away.
Shane grinned happily at the mention of meals both at noon and dinner – even if he overslept, he would still be able to eat plenty today. And then if he did continue to get hungry, he still had the scones. He certainly wouldn't be going to sleep after this with a rumbly tummy as usual. He would have to make sure he was up in time for dinner, though, after that thinly veiled threat – at least in his view – that he hoped to see them there. He wondered vaguely what the announcements were but didn't ponder too much on that, thinking it surely couldn't apply to him or his brothers.
Nick glared back at Tommy as he interfered, his fists clenching slightly. Although he had protected Shane at their dad's house while he was at Hogwarts, he was also used to getting what he wanted from Shane... living with Tommy again was going to take some getting used to. For now, he just shook his head. He was sure he could get Shane to swap if he spoke to him without their older brother around. [green]"Whatever Tommy. We're going to need an alarm if you want us awake for this dinner of yours,"[/green] he said imperiously, turning back to Master Xiu and D'rorah with his chin raised a little as he stared up at them, his expression firm. Shane, relieved that it was over for now, climbed back up onto the bed, kicking his shoes off and burrowing under the duvet, grinning as he felt how soft it was. The top of his head poked out of the covers, but otherwise completely hidden. Tommy, tired of Nick's theatrics, didn't bother to wait for him anymore and sat himself down on the bed closest to the door, so that he would be the first to notice if anyone entered the room.

D'rorah's and Master Xiu's eyebrows arched simultaneously at the imperious statement from Nick about needing an alarm. [blue]"I will stop by to wake you all if need be,"[/blue] she replied without missing a beat. [blue]"Sleep well, brothers Bryce."[/blue]
With that, she and Master Xiu withdrew from the room, closing the door carefully behind them. Master Xiu smiled at her for a moment before heading off toward his study as she entered the next room over, which as empty at the moment. Setting herself down on the bed, D'rorah took a deep breath and tried to still her mind enough to sleep for a bit.
She awoke with enough time to shower and seek out her quarters for a fresh set of robes. Her waist-length hair now partially loosed and tumbling down her back in a cascade of silver and gold waves, she knocked smartly on the door to the room where the three brothers had been left to sleep. [blue]"Dinner is in thirty minutes,"[/blue] she announced, figuring the children wouldn't need very long to get ready.

Once the two adults were gone, things did not calm down immediately. Instead, Tommy was suddenly bombarded with questions that Shane especially had not wanted to ask in front of D'rorah, such as who was she, how had she found out about their father, what was this place they were staying in, not to mention who the old Chinese man was. Tommy answered as best he could, but fortunately for him their talk soon went onto other subjects. Having spent so long away from them, they certainly had lots to talk about.
It was not until several hours later that they finally actually got to sleep. It seemed like no time at all when D'rorah was knocking on the door for dinner. Shane woke immediately at the sound and jumped out of bed, quickly pulling on his grubby velcro trainers again. His eyes turned to Nick, who had simply moaned at the sound and rolled over in his bed. [yellow]"Hurry up Nick!"[/yellow] he called urgently. [yellow]"We don't want them to get angry!"[/yellow] Nick didn't move, although Shane could see Tommy slowly beginning to climb out of bed next to the door.
Turning back and forth between his brothers, Shane sighed then headed for the door, folding his arms around himself to try and warm up as he opened it up, closing it behind him. [yellow]"They're getting ready!"[/yellow] he assures her hurriedly, not wanting them to get in trouble for being late.
