Mallan heard the teacher and was appreciative that the class was ending. His time with D’rorah was becoming awkward over the silence. He was glad that D’rorah had helped him but just did not know where to take the conversation especially since she seemed to want to be resistance to conversation. So, Mallan decided he’d excuse himself and go wait by the professor’s desk.
Well, Miss D’rorah, it looks as if our time together has ended as I must go speak with the professor. Thank you for your time and effort. It was a pleasant chat while it lasted. Perhaps we’ll see each other in the near future; I would like that.
Mallan smiled and waited for D’rorah to say her goodbye before making his way to Professor Archer’s desk. His first class at Hogwarts was over and the class had nothing to do with magic but it was still cool. Not overly fascinating since he remember something of taking the class before.

"You are quite welcome, Mister Baine," replied D'rorah quietly. "I am certain we will encounter one another soon." She nodded to him politely before gathering her things. She tucked everything neatly into her satchel and turned to head out into the hallway. It had been odd... normally she would have never talked so much in a class, but it had been a pleasant conversation, nonetheless. She descended the stairs from the astronomy tower quietly, wondering what Professor Archer might have wanted with Mallan. Considering his age and the fact that he was completely new to the practice of magic, it seemed quite likely he would want to offer some catch-up lessons or something of the like.
She shrugged off her inquisitive mind. She had her own research worries and questions to attend to for the evening. As she made her way to the Ravenclaw common room, those questions became the only ones on her mind.

Susan reluctantly made note of the homework. The report would be easy enough as Susan was quite interested in the subject at hand. She was reluctant in the fact that the class was now over. She took her time clearing away her things and packing up her telescope. Astronomy was one of her smaller classes and she decided she liked it that way.
Soon she had her things together and was prepared to leave the tower. Susan checked clock on the way out of the class, it was an hour later than she usually went to bed. As she took note of the time, Susan involuntarily let out a yawn. She was thankful at the moment to be sorted into the House of Gryffindor, for the way to her dormitory wasn't as long as the others. With the aspect of sleep on her mind, Susan made her way down the flight of stairs that would lead her to her destination.

Not feeling that he needed to be particularly discretionary in speaking to Mallan, especially considering the topic, he smiled as the boy parted ways with D’rorah and made his way over. Giving a small nod to both the Ravenclaw prefect and Susan as they, in turn, departed the classroom, he returned his attention fully to the boy before him. “Mister Baine, while I expect you’re most certainly not stupid, you are a long way behind considering you’ve been placed according to your age, in the sixth year group. Have you got any extra lessons or tutoring set up so that you can catch up to your year level? The sixth is quite an important year, afterall, because you begin to learn the requirements for your N.E.W.T’s,” he explained in a relatively normal tone. It implied neither happiness nor the opposite; he was merely speaking with the boy. The only inflection his voice held was one of serious contemplation.

Zee hadn't been paying attention to virtually any of the lesson. The entire time he'd been lost in his own thoughts, wallowing in his guilt and confusion. Distantly he heard Archer dismiss the class and say something about an essay. Zee would probably get the information later from Wysteria or D'rorah. He was a good student who was loathe to allow a homework assignment to go undone, but at the moment he didn't care enough to latch onto the description of the assignment.
Quickly deconstructing his telescope and setting it into its case a little less gently than was advisable, Zee through his bag over one shoulder and picked up the telescope case in the other hand. He moved silently to the exit without looking at anybody. Once there though he did glance back at Wysteria. She wasn't looking at him, was laughing at something one of the other students had said. Zee had the urge to walk over and join the conversation, smiling and joking the way he typically would.
With a small shake of his head he turned and headed down the stairs. He was in no humor to socialize and figured he would doubtless get a chance to talk to her alone on a later night there in the tower. Not a week later Zee would strongly regret not having taken the opportunity to exchange just a few words with her, but he couldn't have known that. There was no way for him to know that it had been the last time he'd ever see Wysteria Edwin alive.

Slightly nervous Mallan stepped up to Professor Archer’s desk but before he had a chance to speak the professor regarded him. Mallan felt silly after hearing what the professor said. He had expected something… well something harsher for some reason. The professor brought up a good point though; he should have tutors. Luckily D’rorah had already offered to help when she could but Mallan knew it would only annoy her, as anyone, if he just kept going to her alone for all his problems. Not only that but it would not look good for his image. Perhaps Professor Archer was insinuating that he would be able to tutor? Then there was the issue of the N.E.W.T’s; Mallan had no idea what those were.
I do realize that I am far behind the rest of the students here, Professor Archer. However, I believe I should be able to catch up as I am a quick learner especially on topics that I, no doubted, will find fascinating. Your advice is heeded and appreciative. Miss D’rorah has already offered to assist me if I need it. Though I understand that I will need more help than just hers. Would you be willing, if time permits, to assist me as well then? Ah, and what are N.E.W.T’s?
Mallan was sure the professor would be too busy to help him but there was no harm in asking; there usually was no harm that is. There are always circumstances that silence needs to be held. Right now though, Mallan was eager to head to his dorm, sleep, and then take on the next day.

Smiling in what he hoped would be a somewhat reassuring manner, he nodded at the mention of D’rorah already having offered to tutor him. “Good good, Miss Philosophy is a very able student,” he said in recognition, clearly approving of the matter. He knew, however, that she was incredibly busy of late; she would need all the time possible to research and while he himself was doing exactly the same, his stunted language skills held him back significantly. He was quite sure that D’rorah was of more use in that department, and could cover a whole range of texts that he wouldn’t even begin to comprehend.
“Of course I would be quite happy to assist you, Mister Baine. I’m proficient in quite a few subjects, mainly Astronomy, of course, and Defence Against the Dark Arts. I’m also rather adept at Charms… And I’m sure I could guide you through the basics of any other subject you might be taking, at least,” he said quietly, offering a small smile to the boy as students began filing out of the classroom and down to their eagerly awaiting beds.
“Ah… You’ve not heard of N.E.W.T’s, of course. They are wizarding exams, taken at the conclusion of a witch or wizard’s seventh year of schooling. There are also the O.W.L’s for the fifth years, I’m not quite sure what Headmistress LaPointe is wanting you to do in respect to those. But I’m sure I could find out soon enough and tutor you accordingly,” he said thoughtfully, wondering if the boy would want a further explanation of the examinations. “For the exams, everyone sits both a practical and theoretical section for each one, in which you must demonstrate knowledge of N.E.W.T level concepts and practices,” he expanded lightly, wondering if that was enough. Surely he would at least have a general idea now, and it shouldn’t be too different from any Muggle system.
“If you’re available, I could see you every few nights or so. Perhaps three times a week?” he suggested, unsure as to exactly which classes he might have trouble with or even want Alex to tutor him on. Admittedly, he’d never been a big fan of Divination, and not really a good person with Magical Creatures or Herbology, but all of the largely academic subjects he had mastered quite well. “Just let me know which subjects you’d like help in, because you might need to catch up on a lot of the basics. Even things that won’t be in your N.E.W.T’s, you still need to know.”

Professor Archer actually sounded helpful and genuinely sincere in his offering of assistance. It was a refreshing experience after all the muggle schools he had been to before. There all the teachers seemed to care about was that they had a student to fill a sit which in turn gave them more money. Mallan hoped all the professors would be as helpful and caring as Professor Archer seemed to be. If they were life here would not be as hard as it seemed. Though with how much emphasis Professor Archer was putting on the N.E.W.T’s, and the information outside of its prerequisites, Mallan began realizing that his first impression may be the complete opposite.
Professor Archer, you impress me with your care for students. I commend you. (Mallan raises his eyebrows and nods once for emphasis) I believe Miss D’rorah is assisting me with Defense Against the Dark Arts but I would greatly appreciate your help with Charms. It is true that I am completely ignorant of the requirements for the N.E.W.T’s; perhaps during our time together you would enlighten me on the topic. When you would like to start?
Mallan was extremely grateful for all the assistance he was receiving at Hogwarts so far. He would have to find a way to help out Professor Archer and Miss D’rorah. That was the only way he could think of paying them back. In any case, Mallan was relieved that the whole topic of conversation was actually for his wellbeing instead of a lecture.

Smiling lightly at the boy’s comments, his eyes creased as his face was lit by the smile. This was an odd boy indeed… Somewhat amused that a student would commend him for caring about themselves, he mustered up a reply of his own. “Very well, I would be quite happy to aid you with Charms, as well as your exams. We could start tomorrow night, if you’re not busy,” he suggested lightly. Of course, around teaching two classes, learning a new language, his translation and research tasks, his Head of House and patrol duties, and his lightfighter training, it would be a tight squeeze to add in tutoring lessons. But it was for Mallan’s wellbeing, and he was more than happy to help.
Considering briefly the drastic effect that teaching only one class would have on his relatively full schedule, he smiled once more. “Just drop by my office after the evening meal and we’ll spend an hour or so going over your N.E.W.T’s and perhaps make a start at your Charm work.” Pushing himself off from his desk, he walked around his desk and opened a drawer. Withdrawing a small item from it, he shut the drawer once more, simultaneously slipping the object into his front pocket. “So, I’ll see you then, Mister Baine,” he said happily, ready to depart the class and head to his eagerly awaiting bed.

Listening to the professor, Mallan was once again shocked; not only was the professor going to take time out of his schedule but he was going to work with Mallan’s schedule as well. Mallan continued listening to the professor as he gave him the instructions on where to go and what time. However, once the professor pulled an item out of his desk without mentioning it Mallan’s mental attention to the conversation was gone. Curiosity for the unknown object overwhelmed him but he kept his eyes focused on Professor Archer. The only noticeable affect was that Mallan was a little slow at responding.
Thank you for all of your help. My schedule is still being set, as I am new, so I don’t believe there will be an issue meeting with you tomorrow. So tomorrow it is. Have a good night Professor Archer.
Mallan gave a bow with only his head, turned around, and left the classroom. Mallan took his time walking back to his dorm. “The first night has gone well,” Mallan thought as he grinned to himself “if the rest of them go as smoothly as this one I will never want to go home.” He made it to his dorm room and readied himself for sleep. Tomorrow was a new day full of new experiences and Mallan wanted to be fully awake and aware.
