[Note: there are few tragedies in the world I find more inexplicable than the loss of a life barely begun. Some people try to tell me that God has a purpose for these things, but I find it hard to see the purpose in the pain of a parent burying a child. The Kaddish, a prayer said by mourners of the Jewish faith, is what is known as a doxology. It is a straight praise of God... no prayer of petition. I suppose we need the reminder, in the face of such startling, brutal emotional assault, that there is some sort of higher power out there, offering comfort. It is all too easy to forget the Oneness that is God... and that the same hand that breaks our hearts is the one that reaches out to mend them.]
Fleeting (Interpretive Kaddish for a Newborn)
People pass in and out of our lives.
Their presence is fleeting.
Milestones every day approach and then pass by.
Our achievements are fleeting.
Days cycle through in only twenty-four short hours.
Months cycle by.
Years feel just as fast.
Time is fleeting.
Joy comes, sadness follows, the ebb and flow is a roller coaster.
Emotions are fleeting.
Creatures of time, habit, and circumstance,
Life is fleeting.
We endure through our memories, learning to patch the holes torn into the tapestries of our lives,
Creatures of perseverance
Devastation is fleeting.
We endure tragedy with the support of loved ones,
Comfort is fleeting.
But as we carry on,
taking with us the memories of those we have met along the way
taking along the lessons we learn in life and passing them to new generations
picking up the pieces as best we can when fate scatters them to the gales
finding some constancy in the uncertainty of the world
learning to treasure all of those fleeting things
We begin to take comfort in the fact that those fleeting moments
Our precious gifts
Are what sustain us through times when hope seems distant
And in so doing
Become eternal
And so all of those fleeting things
Seem that much more lasting
as we dedicate them to eternity
pack them away in our hearts forever
And take them out periodically with love and reverence
Making those fleeting moments indelible to us
As they leave their marks upon our world
Upon our hearts.

May the memories of those who leave us behind always be a blessing.
