A small, brown elf owl swooped in, heading in the direction of the Ravenclaw table instead of his normal flight straight to the Hufflepuff table. He was carrying a package bigger than himself as he gracefully landed in front of D'rorah with a soft hoot of greeting. He fluttered his wings, like one would stretch their arms, and then hoped onto her shoulder, nuzzling into her cheek before slipping into sleep.
The package was as large as a tome and when opened it in fact contained not only a book, but a letter and two small boxes like Cavan had had at lunch the other day. The letter was addressed Ms. D'rorah Philosophy. The title of the book was in ancient runes, followed by the translation in English; 'History of Wizardry 2010-1000' the author was expected, written and illustrated by Casey Weiss. The two boxes were small, about three inches all the way around, both were a light brown color, and the only difference between them was that one was slightly cold to the touch.
Upon opening the letter, D'rorah would see the quick, neat, curling letters. Ms. D'rorah Philosophy, I recently received word from my son filled with small bits about his school work, but the main content was you. It appears to me that he looks up to you a great deal. He mentioned not only that you are helping him keep his knowledge of languages growing, which he had always been very adept with, but also that you are his first friend there. He asked that I send him extra food, so that he could offer it to you. I have decided I will just supply you myself. You will notice two small boxes in this package, the colder one contains a months worth of vegetarian 'meats', tofu, and many other healthy treats and snacks, all shrunk for storage. To reheat the food, simply place what you wish to eat in the other box, cast a small warming charm on the box and then after a few moments it will be heated to the proper temperature. Then simple put it on your plate and cast a restoring charm, the food will return to it's proper size. There is a chilling charm on the box holding your food, it will last until it is empty, then you may send it back if you wish more. I expect you will as this is my way of thanking you for helping my son. The book is my newest, not yet out in stores, I thought you might enjoy it, I've signed the inside cover for you. I hope you will enjoy these gifts. Also, I will be telling Cavan this as well, but he has our permission to study with your friend over the summer, he need only come home for one week of his choosing so he might see his new baby brother and visit with his other siblings. Thank you again for keeping an eye on my oldest. Ms. Casey Weiss

D'rorah looked up, surprised to see an owl heading her way. She couldn't remember the last time she had bothered to step into the Great Hall for breakfast, but ever since having dinner with Cavan the other day, she had promised herself she would put forth more of an effort to attend to such things. "Tad," she greeted quietly as he nuzzled into her cheek. She smiled a bit a scratched at the side of his head as he fell asleep on her shoulder.
She couldn't imagine why anyone would be sending her such a large package and decided to go ahead and open it, rather than delay answering the mystery. She looked first over the book. Her eyes immediately fell on the name of Casey Weiss. She nodded slightly and turned her attention to the letter. She couldn't help but feel touched by it, the thought that Cavan had apparently said so many good things about her to his mother. Actually, it made her feel slightly bad, considering that the scribal position would likely place him in a fair amount of danger. She couldn't help but think that his mother would probably be far less approving if she were aware of that detail. Then again, considering the Shadows in the forest, she supposed training in the monastery, surrounded by Master Xiu and his monks would likely be a fair sight safer than daily life at Hogwarts.
Reading on about the vegetarian 'meats' that had been included in the package, she smiled. Had her move to Hogwarts not been so sudden, she might have thought of it herself. As it was, she was grateful and made up her mind to send some sort of compensation. Reading on, she saw that Ms. Weiss was using the foods as a gesture of thanks for tutoring Cavan.
She would have to write a return letter to thank Casey for the almost shocking gesture of kindness. She didn't have time to send a proper letter at the moment, but she promised herself to get one out before the end of the day today. Gathering her things, she rose from her seat and made her way over to the Hufflepuff table, Tad still sleeping on her shoulder. "I believe I have a friend of yours here, Mister Weiss," she remarked, coming up behind him.

He took another bite of his granola when a loud hoot made him looked up, he was surprised to see an owl heading his way. He couldn't remember the last time he'd seen the large, dark barn owl, "Malcolm? I see mother's been busy." The owl hooted and dropped a package similar to the one his mentor had received moments before. He offered the bird a strip of bacon, which was quickly snatched up before he was flying off again.
He opened the package to find his mother's new book, more lunches and snacks and an envelope he assumed contained a letter. He quickly shoved the book and boxes into his messenger bag before turning to the envelope to read it's contents. He'd been wrong, there was more than just a letter inside, there were also several pictures, one of his new baby brother, one of the whole family, one of his father and a hippogriff, one of just his brothers and sisters, and one of his mother writing.
Finally he found the letter, snuggled between two of the pictures. Dearest Cavan, As you will have no doubt noticed, I have sent your friend a package much like yours. I see no reason she shouldn't have her own supply of food so that she, like you, can eat when she isn't busy, or on the go. I spoke to your father, and then we both spoke to your brothers and sister and we have agreed that you have our permission to study with your friend over the summer, you need only come home for one week of your choosing so you might see your new baby brother and visit with your family. As you can see from the photos, I've had your brother recently. We've named him Loki Baldr Weiss. He looks much like you did as a baby and for this we are all glad, because we know how well you've turned out. Take care of yourself and those around you. Love, Your mom
Cavan had just finished reading his letter when D'rorah was making her way over to the Hufflepuff table, Tad sleeping on her shoulder.
"I believe I have a friend of yours here, Mister Weiss."
Cavan leaned back, looking up to find D'rorah's face, he grinned as he looked up at his upside down face. "I was wondering where he was, normally my mom sends him and this morning I was met by the family owl, Malcolm... Did she send you anything nice?" He knew what she'd gotten, but he wondered if she would appreciate it or be annoyed by his mother's need to gift everyone who smiled their family's way.
He turned so that he was looking at her properly when she answered, shifting he noticed how far away the rest of the students at his table were before shrugging. He didn't mind that an entire Quidditch team could have fit between him and the other Hufflepuffs. His attention quickly returned to D'rorah and sleeping Tad.

D'rorah nodded and smiled a bit. "Indeed she did. I cannot recall the last time I received an owl." Well, that wasn't entirely true... the last owl she had received had been the letter from the Order of Light, informing her of Wysteria's death in Romania. But that wasn't the sort of owl she was talking about anyway... and it hardly seemed the sort of thing to share around the breakfast table, regardless.
"I have an entire supply now of vegetarian meats thanks to your mother, a new book to read... and permission to have you study with Master Xiu over the break." She took a deep breath, as though the thought of that brought something else to her mind. Indeed it did, it brought a mild feeling of guilt to the forefront of her mind. "You and I should discuss that further today."
She stepped over the bench and lowered herself into a seat next to Cavan. "And you seem to have received your own package as well. I will have to write a letter, thanking your mother for my own package. It was very kind of her."

He smiled, glad that his mother had given her what he'd requested. He was also happy to know that she approved of his friendship so much that she'd gifted D'rorah with a book. It meant a lot more than she realized he was sure, but he didn't say anything, he would tell her later, when it was more appropriate. "Yes, I still have a lot of questions, and I'm sure you have a lot to tell and ask me too. Mom wrote me telling me I had permission as well, but I know it's a ways off and there is a lot to consider." If it weren't for the fact that Cavan really had no clue what was going, he might have understood completely what his words meant to D'rorah.
Cavan chuckled to himself as she stepped over the bench and lowered herself into a seat next to Cavan.
"And you seem to have received your own package as well. I will have to write a letter, thanking your mother for my own package. It was very kind of her."
"You'll let me know if she starts to pester you, won't you? She's very excited that I have made a friend so quickly. She was a bit worried, what with the way my parents raised us, they were a little worried... Would you like to see the pictures she's sent me?" He offered her the five moving photographs of his family.

"Yes, I shall inform you straightaway," she replied, a hint of laughter creeping into her voice. "So then, pictures?" She accepted the photographs Cavan held out to her and began slowly looking through them. "So, a new baby brother," she remarked absently. "How many siblings do you have, all told? I have none, personally." She stopped there and continued flipping through the pictures. She didn't wish to recount the recent history of her family. It wasn't breakfast conversation... and on top of that, it wasn't something she really felt like sharing at the moment, period. As fond as she seemed to have grown of Cavan, she still couldn't shake the memory of peers who had blamed her for the deaths of her own parents.
"You have a lovely family," she remarked politely, passing the pictures back to him. "We will work out your summer schedule later today. Your mother wished you to have at least one week to visit with your family. I am certain that will not be any problem whatsoever."
"Well, I should be off to classes for the morning. Have a good day, Mister Weiss." With that, she rose from her seat and headed off in the direction of the main corridor, her heavy satchel over her shoulder.

Cavan smiled and nodded, "Yup, his name is Loki Baldr. Three brothers now, and two sisters, all younger than me. If you want one of mine you can have your pick." He offered his siblings up for her picking jokingly. "I'm sure they'd love to have you..." He was going to tell her that he'd started to think of her as a sister, but decided against it at the last moment, suddenly embarrassed about it, thinking she might not appreciate it.
"You have a lovely family. We will work out your summer schedule later today. Your mother wished you to have at least one week to visit with your family. I am certain that will not be any problem whatsoever."
"Thanks," he replied, grinning. He nodded agreeing as he listened, finishing his breakfast after he put the pictures and letter into his bag with everything else.
"Well, I should be off to classes for the morning. Have a good day, Mister Weiss."
He watched as she left, "See you later today D'rorah." He said before gathering his own things and heading off toward class.
