Fraught with emotion, Dylan tried to look anywhere but at her. No matter how hard he tried, however, her eyes drew him and his head began to stir the notion of physical pain, as opposed to the current emotional pain welled up inside of him. Unable to do much of anything, he held back a sob and clenched his jaw once more, mentally bidding himself to stop this foolishness.
Ever since he was little he had seen the happiness brought to his mother and father by each other; they had been the epitome of a blissful marriage. Until Darius had passed they had been faithful, loving, caring, and had raised the son of their dreams, a happy little boy often found zooming about on a broomstick and trudging mud over the wooden floors, his little face so serious. He’d simply always held the idea that being with someone he loved so completely and raising a child with them was what he wanted in life. A good career, enough money to be comfortable were perks you could add onto the package, but building a family had always been that one thing to which he had aimed.
Until he’d met D’rorah, only one person had come to mind and that had been his foster sister. Despite the implications, he thought he might have been happy with her, but it had been a somewhat childish dream. One little crush blown out of proportion by the inability to have her. When Dee had come into his life that had all changed. She was the one, he was sure of it, and even in the early stages of their relationship he had dwelled on secretive thoughts of some day marrying her and raising a baby boy or girl with her. The concept that his whole hold on his future had been tipped so precariously by the news that she could not conceive a child shocked him to the core, and thinking on it only produced several more tears.
Slightly angry with himself for the hot moisture dripping down his cheeks, he felt the pain in his head embed itself quite comfortably. As his eyes found hers, he saw her flush and look away. His eyes sinking to hover just above the ground, he didn’t know why but he felt both ashamed, despite his lack of decision in revealing such information to her, and strangely isolated. It was an odd feeling considering he’d just been so immersed in another’s mind; now he just felt alone.
Embarrassed, he put one hand to the ground and pushed himself up. He couldn’t handle sitting there another moment, forced to endure an awkward silence between himself and his best friend; he needed to move. Taking a few stumbling steps, it took him a while to regain his balance after such an intense joining of Elemental Master and Shadow Warrior, but eventually he managed to walk further into the room, his eyes being distracted by small shrubs and the upcoming stream, but his mind consumed by the events that had just unfolded. Stopping beside the stream, he looked into its waters as if seeking an answer to what appeared an unanswerable question and sighed, his shoulder slumping and his head hanging slightly.
