Ben was bored. And a bored Ben was not a fun thing for any figure of authority who happened to come across him. He had stocked up on his supply of Zonko's goods during his relatively recent trip to Hogsmeade with Niobe, and was eager to try some of it out. Of course, there was homework he could be doing. Or playing quidditch... or going around to find people who needed cheering up. But right now, he didn't feel like any of that. He felt like experimenting with some of these new products from both Zonko's and Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes. He had a standard to live up to, after all. Zonko and the Weasley Twins had given plenty of scope for ideas, and on this occasion, he planned to attempt to copy one in particular.
He headed down from the Gryffindor common room with a bag slung over his shoulder to the fifth floor corridor, where the section of the twin's swamp was still cornered off on display for all. Although he might not be naturally intelligent or get the best grades, when Ben was focussed on something he would do it. He had taken a sample of the swamp about a week ago and worked tirelessly to try and deduce how it was done. He now thought he had the answer, and how better to test it out than to try and expand the swamp to its original size. Since it was a weekday morning, most students would be in class or still asleep and the corridor should be empty for the most part. If not, he could always perform a disillusionment charm to hide himself.
As expected, the corridor was empty. He settled down cross-legged on the floor, pulling the page of notes on the sample out of his bag as well as his wand. It turned out to not quite be as easy as he had thought, although now he was here, he thought that he might as well continue trying. Slowly but surely, he managed to get the swamp to extend past the barrier. First just a few, barely noticeable centimetres, then a foot or so, and now it must be approaching a metre! A noise echoing down the corridor made him jump, startled, to his feet, moving quickly towards his bag and replacing everything back in it. Tapping his head, he murmured the disillusionment charm and felt himself fade out of sight just as someone rounded the corner. He had no plans to scarper just yet... he wanted to see the reaction of whoever was coming past.
((Feel free to hear his feet shuffling or a giggle or some such and take the disillusionment charm off. Alternatively, wonder how it got there and Ben can have fun playing tricks while invisible for a little while ))
