Leilani had fell asleep in the common room the night before, doing her best to study for defense against the dark arts, after her abysmal encounter with the professor. She awoke to the sun rising over the mountain and the light from the now drawn curtains hitting her face. It was a sunny day, one of those rare ones, with a cloudless sky. What a great beach day this would have been, Leilani thought absentmindedly.
Pulling on jean shorts and a yellow t-shirt, Leilani headed out to the lake. Hey, it’s not a beach, but I can work with I’ve got, she smiled. Crossing the lawn onto the grounds, she looked around. Not many students were milling around quite yet. It was a Saturday, and she was sure many of the students were in bed at around ten in the morning.
The lake shimmered before and the grass became more wet and soggy as she grew closer to her destination. At this time, she took off her shoes and socks, placing them neatly near a dry spot of grass, she continued her journey. Finally she reached a point where lake met land and little miniscule waves lapped up onto the muddy bank. Taking a seat, she let the waves hit her feet. She leaned back and enjoyed the sunlight. It was finally the relaxation she needed.

Alessandro had been sitting under a tree by the lake. He tended to do that when he needed to get away and relax. He loved the way the sunlight danced across the lake, sparkling, and reflecting the light, almost looking like fire.
He let out an exasperated sigh. He was here to relax, yet here he was dwelling on the things that vexed him. He leaned his head back, resting it on the bark of the tree behind him. It was a large oak, providing ample shade for this sunny day. He drew in a deep breath and began to sing a song by a muggle artist known as Ryan Cabrera.
"So much beauty in life, Shining on the outside Empty on the inside. I get lost sometimes, Blinded by the flashing lights, Distractions always in my eyes
So I'm following the sound, The sound of my heart.... ....Beating....
You can take it all away I don't need it, Underneath, I'll still be the same. You can take it all away, I don't need it It's not me, You can take it all, take it all away ...I'll still be the same...."
He sang the words with passion as they struck him deep down in his chest. The words seemed to evoke something within him that created a burning sensation in his heart. He was completely unaware that someone had come to the lake to enjoy the peaceful day as well, so close to the spot he was sitting in as he lost himself in song.

Her eyes gently fluttered shut. The sun was at its perfect peak. The waves were gently lapping against the shore. She was so caught up in the rhythm of the lake; the lake seemed to sing to her. Listening more carefully, the lake had seemed to add words to it’s song. She had heard the song before and wondered if the merpeople were having some sort of under water concert for her. Leilani smiled at the silly thought, knowing that all the merpeople could do was screech, let alone sing a muggle song.
Opening her eyes she gazed around the lake, but could only see the dark purple and blue sunspots you get from staring into the sun for too long. She got up and stretched her arms high above her head closing her eyes tightly to get rid of those infernal spots. Now opening her eyes to a new world, she gazed at her surroundings. To the right of her there were still more sandy banks and the forbidden forest rose in the distance. To the left of her there was a large tree, where all the music seemed to be coming from. Taking careful steps she began to move towards the tree, trying to make little noise in case the tree stopped miraculously singing.
Reaching the tree, she touched the bark, gently rapped on its trunk. A quizzical expression crossed Leilani’s face as she began to edge around the tree trying to find the source of the music. “O,” she said softly, as she saw the boys face. He was in two of her classes. Only then did she recognize that the music had stopped. Leilani began to edge away from the tree trying to remeain as quiet as possible. Trying to avoid a possibly awkward situation, if the boy had wanted to be alone.

As he finished his song, he couldn't help but feel like someone was right there, next to him. He jerked his head toward the left as he had detected the slightest bit of noise. He stood up quickly, brushing off his destroyed denim, and straightening out his western shirt. He had the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, the only way he wears his westerns, and the top button undone, exposing a silvery glint from the Italian horn he wore around his neck.
He noticed a girl wearing jean shorts and a yellow tee, trying to back away slowly from around the tree. "Hey...." He said awkwardly as he had been discovered in the throws of his pop-star moment. He chuckled to himself as he felt his cheeks flush the color of a Gryffindor's robe lining.
"Hey, wait a minute...." He called around the tree as he began to move toward her. "You're in a couple of my classes, well, we're in some of the same classes, I should say..." He smiled.
"I'm Alessandro Darko." He said offering a hand extended toward her.

She was almost safely hidden behind the tree when she heard the boy’s voice call back to her. Leilani winced, she had been caught, slowly turning around she gave a nervous smile, “O… h-hey,” she didn’t know whether to pretend she hadn’t heard him singing or not, “Yea, I just came to investigate the singing coming from this tree,” she said leaning her weight against it. That was lame, Lei. He knows or at least thinks you were spying on him, her mind scolded. But she tried to ignore her mental beating.
The boy didn’t seem to act awkward about their chance meeting at all though, as he extended his hand in greeting. Leilani took it gingerly, “Yea you’re in my DADA and Care of Magical Creatures class. Leilani Mejia,” she introduced with a smile.
Feeling a little awkward just standing there she asked lightly, “May I take a seat?” she referred to the place where he had been sitting before.

Alessandro gestured toward the ground as she had asked if she could take a seat. "Be my guest!" He said enthusiastically as he always enjoyed meeting new friends. He took a seat back where he had been sitting and looked out onto the lake.
It had just clicked that she had said that she came over to investigate the singing tree. He giggled as he played that voice clip over in his mind. "Yeah, the singing was me. I hope it wasn't too awful for your ears..." He grinned, hoping that the way he sounded to himself was the same to others.
"It was called: Take It All Away, by Ryan Cabrera....a muggle artist." He said, wondering if she knew anything about muggle music. "I used to live in the states for a bit, so I know a thing or two about muggles, you?" He asked wondering if she had any clue as to what he was talking about.

Glad at his polite gesture she plopped down right next to him. Staring out over the lake, she smiled, “You have a nice view, Mr. Darko. I may have to steal it every once in a while,” she teased, leaning her head back on the tree. It was a serene spot, you could hear the cool breeze whispering through the tree’s leaves, while you watched the lake glow and shimmer.
“Not too awful,” she smiled, “Quite the contrary, your singing was very good actually,” Leilani said thoughtfully, remembering the mysterious voice she had heard down closer to the lake.
“O I know Ryan Cabrera, but I just know him for one song though, On The Way Down,” she inquired if he had heard of the song. “O really?” Leilani smiled, “What part of the States? I’m actually from California.” Leilani was meeting a lot of people from the States now, it was definitely a relief and a whole lot easier to relate. “I grew up with muggles, went to elementary school with the lot of them.”

He smiled as she complimented his singing. He worked very hard to develop his vocal abilities. He used to sing all the time as a child, and just kept on with it as he grew, pushing his voice to his limits. He had a pretty good range for a male, he was able to hit a high B natural above middle C in his chest voice. "Well thank you very much!" He exclaimed with a grin.
"Yeah, I know that song." He smiled. "I have his CD back home." He ran his hand through his hair and looked out onto the lake. "Well, I grew up in Manchester, England until I was six. My father loved to travel, my real father, that is. He took us to the states and we lived in Texas for a while...then we moved to Florida, then we moved finally to Pennsylvania. We only stayed in the states for about three years until I was nine before we finally moved back home to England." He explained as he drew in another breath, prepping for his finish.
"My father...he left before we moved back home, London this time." He simply said gulping. He pulled out his Italian horn and began to work it vigorously between his thumb and forefinger. "Then me mum married...Hewlett..." He said the name with utter disdain. "We don't get on that well...but he loves me mum, and I guess thats all that matters." He said finally.

Leilani listened intently, he had also been many places like she had. His last beat of conversation ended a little shakily. She wasn’t sure whether to ask questions or leave it be. He seemed to get a little exasperated at the subject of his father. Lei watched as he worked a pendant between his fingers.
Wanting to get him off the awkward subject, Lei leaned her head back against the tree she smiled, “I think you’ve almost beat me in travel,” she looked back on all the places she had been. “Are you ready for a mouthful?” she asked with a little laugh.
“My father is actually the owner of a small international quidditch team from El Salvador. They’re not well known yet, the whole thing just started around eighteen years ago? Well, anyway, I was born in El Salvador, and from there we moved to California, where I spent more than half of my life. We then were sent to Japan on my mother’s duties, and then back to California. My father then moved us back to England, where Head Quarters is for Quidditch, and we have lived there ever since,” she ended on a sad note. It wasn’t that she didn’t like England, it was just the fact that California seemed to suit her all the better.

Alessandro listened intently as Leilani shared her backstory. He was intrigued to find that her father owned a small quidditch team, from El Salvador. He had suspected that she was of some hispanic orgin, she had that latin spice-look going for her. His eyes widened as she recounted that she had been to Japan, and then ultimately California. He himself hadn't experienced California, and always heard about it from other kids in the US. Texas was dry and hot, Florida was hot and wet, beautiful beaches though, but he really did like the metropolis Pennsylvania had to offer. He was more of a metro-city person, himself.
"Thats amazing. You've been to Japan, I'm jealous." He said smiling. "You definitely have me beat in the traveling department. So...You're El Salvadorian? Thats neat..." He said looking at her as if it were written on her.

A smile appeared on her face, this was actually the most she talked about herself since she had stepped off the train. He was the first one she told about her father’s occupation. Quidditch seemed to be a big deal around Hogwarts. “I should be the one jealous,” she replied with a smile, “I always wanted to travel the states. So many different people in each, and I only got to experience one.
Leilani giggle, “Not only am I half El Salvadorian, but I’ve got a fourth of Japanese and Irish too,” she said thoughtfully, “I’m basically a combination plate,” Lei joked. She began to absentmindedly pick the grass on her right side.
“And are you into Quidditch?” she asked curiously. He was a boy wasn’t he? Ask a muggle boy the question and he’d just sit with an odd expression on his face.

"I'm into Quidditch, yes, I mean, I like it. Like it enough to try out for seeker, but I'm not crazy about Quidditch. I don't eat, drink, breath, sleep, and bleed Quidditch, it's just a fun game." He explained as he answered her question. A lot of people he knew were diehard about the game, he never understood people who obsessed over things like sports, or drugs. The only addiction he had was to food.
"Are you into Quidditch at all?" He asked wondering if she may be trying out soon. Not many girls found the game to be something they saw themselves participating in. Most girls wanted to have slumber parties and drink tea and braid hair, and read the Quibbler, discussing which boy's goblet that they would contaminate with Amortentia.
He ran a hand through his hair, all the way to the back of his head, sort of hugging it with his arm as he succumbed to a long and satisfying yawn. He hoped Leilani wouldn't think that he was bored with her, it was just that he was very tired.
