It was well past time to be asleep, but as he'd been unable to do so for some time without being plagued by nightmares. So now he sat, rereading a hand written book D'rorah had asked him to read. This was the second time through and he was still absorbing all the book had to tell him. Some things he hadn't been ready to understand the first time were making more sense this second time around.
He was extremely careful with it, for more than one reason. It was worn to begin with and as it wasn't his, he was taking more care than he even did with those, which was already a lot. The second reason being, it was filled more information more important than anything he had read before. He had to keep closing it to take a deep breath and let everything he'd read sink in and fix into the appropriate places to fill in gaps. He felt like a jig-saw puzzle that hadn't known there were pieces missing before.
He was curled in a ball in a chair near the fire, taking in the warmth as he took in the words. He hoped that he wasn't being to loud, as he had a habit of voice his exclamations, such as 'oh!' and 'well that makes sense...'

Caity sat up in bed, suddenly very awake. She’d forgotten to do her Potions homework. Professor Sparrow’s words echoed in her head. Your homework for next class is to study the ingredients and effects of as many poisons as you can. She hadn’t done that, and wouldn’t have a chance over the next few days, with Christmas so rapidly approaching. Glancing at the time, she saw it was quite late, but knew that if she didn’t do it now she’d forget... at least, she’d forget until it came to the lesson again. Grabbing her potions textbook, a pad of paper and some pens – she still hadn’t gotten used to quills and parchment – she pulled on a thick jumper and hastened down the stairs to the Hufflepuff common room. She hadn’t really been in the common room much, preferring to do any homework in the library or on her bed, rather than in the noisy room where her housemates resided. However, she couldn’t really do this potions work without a light, and a light would wake up her dorm mates. At least at this time of night it wouldn’t be too crowded or loud.
Sure enough, the common room was nearly empty. A small boy was curled up in a chair by the fire, whom she quickly recognised as Cavan. Heading over to where he was sitting, she sat in the chair opposite him, giving him a brief smile as she tucked her legs under her and opened her textbook to the section on poisons.
As she began to take notes, she heard a small exclamation from the first year and looked up, curious. He seemed completely absorbed in whatever it was he was reading. “Good book?” she grinned in a friendly manner.

Cavan looked up surprised to hear Caitlin's voice and even more surprised to see that he hadn't heard her come in, let alone sit down not that far from him. He replaced his bookmark and closed the book, letting it sit beside the chair's arm and his side. While he would love to keep reading, it was something he'd been given in confidence and as he didn't know who was on which side or at all, he didn't want to take any chances, especially since he hadn't even noticed her approach. "Yeah, it's pretty interesting. You're up late, trouble sleeping too?" He asked politely, he didn't mind people knowing he couldn't sleep, though D'rorah and his parents would only ever be the ones who knew why.
He shifted in his chair a little, making himself more comfortable now that he wasn't reading. He noticed the book in her hands and wondered if perhaps she'd decided, like him, that homework was better than sleeping or if it was something else. He absently remembered that he'd only had time to get information on five poisons and anti-dotes and he really did need to crack down and get at least five more done before he would be satisfied with himself. He wasn't really in the mood for potions and silently went through the list of homework he still needed to finish and came up blank. He sighed and thought about what class he might want to prep for and other than potions, he was set for a while. He supposed he could read year five's charms book, or year four's transfiguration book, but he was so bored with studying. Maybe he should find something entertaining to read, or he could work on his translations, either for D'rorah or for his siblings.

Apparently Cavan hadn’t heard her approach or even sit down, and looked surprised to see her there at all. The moment he did notice her he put down his book so that she could no longer see it from where she was. Although her curiosity was spiked she said nothing – if he didn’t want her to know what it was then she shouldn’t make him uncomfortable by asking any more about it.
"Yeah, it's pretty interesting. You're up late, trouble sleeping too?"
“Not exactly...” She grimaced slightly and held up her potions textbook. “I wrote the homework on the back of my hand and kind of forgot about it, and it washed off,” she admitted abashedly. “I woke up just now and remembered, and knew that if I didn’t do it now I’d just forget again.”
Glancing down at the open pages of the textbook, she let out a small sigh. Trying to do homework at this time of night was useless, she just couldn’t concentrate. She didn’t know how Cavan managed to do it. Scrawling down a note about what she still had left to do (which was most of the homework, in fact) she ripped off the corner of the sheet of paper she had been taking notes on and put it as a bookmark into her textbook, where she would see it upon glancing at it again. It would be no good if she left it now and then just woke up again remembering in a few nights time – she’d just be in the exact same situation. Closing the textbook and putting the lid on her pen, she put both on the table beside her and rubbed her eyes sleepily. It was a shame muggle technology didn’t work in Hogwarts – at least then she could have her phone and be able to put a reminder on it, which would beep incessantly until she marked the task as done.

“Not exactly... I wrote the homework on the back of my hand and kind of forgot about it, and it washed off. I woke up just now and remembered, and knew that if I didn’t do it now I’d just forget again.”
Cavan nodded, understanding, after all, her potions book had reminded him that he wasn't yet done to his satisfation. He thought about it for a moment, seeing her write a small note before closing the book again. She looked exhausted and a little stressed, absently he wondered if she had anything to do with 'the war' but wasn't about to ask her.
"If you'd like, I can remind you in the morning, before breakfast. I still have to finish mine, so I wouldn't mind helping you either. You really look tired right now and it's easier to learn when you're freshly awake or just before bed." He offered the reminder she would need and the help he loved to give in one fell swoop. He smiled brightly to her, shifting again in his chair to get more comfortable with the book beside him. He decided that he was going to finish up the book he was reading before he worked on his translating once more. He would leave his potions homework to be finished in the morning.

Cavan seemed to consider her for a few moments before replying, Caity noted out of the corner of her eye as she put down the textbook. He really was exceptional, she thought, remembering the numerous occasions in class when he had bettered those who were six or seven years older than him; her included. It was very surprising that he hadn’t ended up in Ravenclaw, in her opinion.
"If you'd like, I can remind you in the morning, before breakfast. I still have to finish mine, so I wouldn't mind helping you either. You really look tired right now and it's easier to learn when you're freshly awake or just before bed."
“Thanks,” she smiled, knowing that it wasn’t exactly unlikely that she might forget again. “Yes, I don’t usually do homework at this time of night,” she admitted, glancing at the clock on the mantelpiece above the roaring fire. That fire was one of the best things about the common room – so warm compared to the freezing weather outside.
“So how come you can’t sleep?” she asked curiously. It really was very late to be up, for both of them, especially given that they would both have lessons the next day.

“Thanks. Yes, I don’t usually do homework at this time of night. So how come you can’t sleep?”
Cavan smiled and nodded at her thanks, "I do but then, I've been having trouble sleeping for some time now..." He knew after talking to Dylan that he couldn't really trust anyone. That didn't mean he couldn't talk to people. He just couldn't talk about the obvious things.
"I've been having nightmares lately... So I sleep between classes and do my homework and studying when everyone else is sleeping. I've found that I don't need as much sleep as everyone seems to think they do." He smiled brightly at the fact. "Being awake at night has it's advantages, which I take for granted. Peace and quiet, tons of time to work on not just my homework, but also my translating and tutoring notes."

((Again with the too many threads... sorry!))
Caity wondered exactly how long this younger boy had been having trouble sleeping – he always seemed wide awake in lessons, so was he just one of those people who didn’t need much sleep? She seemed to always be oversleeping in the mornings, although that could just be that she needed to lots of sleep. It certainly wasn’t because she was going to bed too late at night.
"I've been having nightmares lately... So I sleep between classes and do my homework and studying when everyone else is sleeping. I've found that I don't need as much sleep as everyone seems to think they do. Being awake at night has its advantages, which I take for granted. Peace and quiet, tons of time to work on not just my homework, but also my translating and tutoring notes."
Caitlin frowned slightly at the mention of nightmares, but didn’t really want to pry into Cavan’s life by asking more questions. If he hadn’t mentioned it immediately in reply, it was unlikely he wished to elaborate any more on the subject. “I’m sure you could get something from the school nurse to stop you having nightmares, or dreaming at all for that matter,” she suggested, sure that that was indeed the case. Cavan was unlikely to be able to continue working so hard on so little sleep. In fact, thinking about it, if she wasn’t going to do this homework she really should go back to bed, or she’d be too tired to do it the morning either.
Picking up the textbook and standing, she smiled down at Cavan where he was curled up in the armchair. “Unlike you, I do actually need my sleep so I think I should be heading off to bed now. Hope the nightmares get better.”
Smiling once more in farewell, she headed back up to the dormitory she had just come from, dropping the textbook onto her bedside table where she would see it upon waking, and fell among the covers of the four-poster bed. Curling up, it was not long before she was asleep again, surrounded by dreams of unfinished potions homework and a Hufflepuff first year reading a huge tome next to a fire.
