Blood: Pure
Father: Richard De Winter
Mother: Marissa De Winter
Siblings: Peter, Carly, Julian, Emily and adopted siblings Liam and Lily
Other Family: Aunt Freda and Uncle Marcus cousins Roman and Calliope (Cally)
Family Interactions:
Megan is the youngest in a large sprawling family. Ranging in age from 38 to 13, the five De Winter children were born within some time of each other. Her oldest siblings seem more like aunts and uncles rather than siblings, having lives and families of their own. Emily, at 22 is the closest in age to Megan and the one who spends the most time with her, yet it is still a lonely existence for the youngest De Winter child.
Her parents, though loving, have been unable to help their youngest with her feelings of loneliness and privately they wonder at their selfishness at having a child so many years apart from their other children.
Height: 5'8
Weight: 12"
Hair: Black
Eyes: Grey
Skin Colour: pale
Clothing style: Dramatic clothing in deep vibrant colours
Accessories: Long earrings and enamelled floral pendents
Other: She is rangy and athletic in build yet clumsy with delicate things.
Paragraph Format:
Like all De Winter's, Megan is tall and slender with jet black hair that she wears straight and long to her waist. When not in uniform she wears long skirts in deep plums and violets and black or white blouses embroidered with beads. Sometimes she stiches small bells into the hems, liking the sound it makes as she walks.
Unlike her older sister, she dislikes mess and muggle trousers, preferring long skirts or robes. She wears dark eye make-up, giving her an intense appearance and were it not for the colourful clothes that fall over her body, she could be considered extremely gothic in appearance.
In school, Megan plaits her long hair into two braids, tying the ends with blue ribbon and carries a battered leather school satchel, previously owned by her older brother and Mungo's healer, Julian. Usually seen with her nose in a book, Megan gives the appearance of a studious swot which isn't far from the truth.
Personality:
Megan is quiet, lonely, studious and above all, very aware of the expectations placed on her. The De Winters have attended Hogwarts since it first opened the doors and all, bar a few, have joined Ravenclaw. The family is renowned for magical talent and intelligence and not one of her siblings has failed to live up to the name.
Yet Megan worries that she is not good enough to succeed as s good De Winter as her grades are not as high as it could be expected. Unlike her siblings, she finds school work hard and has to study constantly, merely to keep the place in class that she feels she has to keep. Despite her parents love and support, she does feels that she disappoints them and so she tries harder. Yet, like running up the down escalator, she seems to slip further the harder she tries.
Shy around new people and hesitant to talk about herself, Megan is seen as aloof and once again she finds herself alone. At times she wishes that she could be confident enough with herself to break out of her cycle of solitude, yet the courage is never there and she returns to her studies and a solitary existence.
History:
Megan was born into a household to older parents and siblings that were not even close to her age. Her older sister Carly married two years before Megan was born and had already moved in with her husband. Peter was working for Ollivanders and Julian had just left Hogwarts and joined the staff of Mungo's. Emily and her adopted siblings Liam and Lily were at school for the first 7 years of Megan's life which ensured that she had little company for most of the year. She never wanted for attention from her mother and father as both of them loved being parents. Her father was a photographer with the Prophet and her French born mother sold art. The De Winter manor is a large E shaped building with enough space to fit the whole family and most of her siblings have apartments there, yet for all the family, it was a lonely place. It's hard being under the age of ten when the rest of the family are in their twenties. While her brother's and sisters did their best, she grew up without the benefit of children her own age. Julian especially seemed remote, even to his older siblings. His cool nature was a continuing issue with her parents who took time to upbraid him for it. Megan spent some years believing that Julian did not like her and grieved at it.
The year of Emily's graduation saw the death of Walter De Winter, Megan's grandfather. Even though the family grieved, a sense of relief flooded the household as Walter was a pureblood bigot, disappointed with his son's choice of life. For the first time in her life, she met her father's sister and her cousins Cally and Roman, with the death of Grandfather they were finally able to return to the family home. Roman brought with him his wife and young daughter. They only stayed for six months but the company gave Megan a sense of the family she was missing and she felt the loss keenly when her cousin's family returned to their home in Barcelona. It was in this year that Megan found the letter. At eight, she barely understood the legal text and long words but she understood enough. The letter told of the disappearence of a Velvet Dumas, fiancee of her older brother Julian, and that she was now legally dead. In that moment, Megan felt sorrow for her older brother, seeing that his coldness hid a great pain that he struggled to hide behind work and patients. The contents of that letter have haunted her for years.
In general her upbringing was ordinary, she wasn't spoiled or abused and her family believed in the strength of hard work and intelligence. She spent a good deal of her childhood exploring the large 100 room manor and looking at the family tree. The time spent in the large family library was used discovering her family connections to numerous pureblood families, such as the Mackinnons and the Llewelyns. It became clear that the De Winter's are a prestigious name and most have great expectations for that name.
The week before she returned to Hogwarts for the new year, she found a secret passage in the library and went exploring. The expedition took her all morning, but she found a small glory hole covered in dust and cobwebs and filled with equipment that had not been touched in years. Underneath the stack of old parchment was a journal written in blood red ink by Melisande De Winter, an ancestor of hers. Realising quickly that Melisande was not only brilliant but one of the few De Winters to not be sorted into Ravenclaw, she took the book out of curiousity and returned to her room. However a hunt for Melisande on the extensive De Winter family tree has proved fruitless and Megan is afraid to ask her father because of where she found the diary. The diary is extensive and is taking her time to read yet the information is fascinating and she does wish to discover more about the woman in the book.
