Megan moved beside the wind whipped waters of the lake, her grey eyes fixed on nothing. It was late sunday morning and the sky was dull and overcast. Rain was promised and the clouds hung heavy and ponderous over the castle turrets. Reaching a favourite spot by the water, she bunched up her long violet skirt and sat, dipping her hand into her battered leather satchel to locate her book.
Drawing forth the battered red leather tome, she opened it and started to read.
To rein in the powers of an uncontrolled illusion, the caster must expect to expend more energy than originally utilised. In fact, unless the illusion is immediately dangerous, it may be more advantageous to allow the spell to run its course as draining one's energy is barely profitable in the long run.
Megan looked up, feeling the strands of hair whip against her face in the stiff breeze. The book had been useful yet troubling. Several of the charm spells she learnt within had been noted in the pages of this small, cracked and elderly book, but there notes were not those of one learning the spell. Each of the spells had been written as though under construction, notations about experimentation and usage, as though the writer had created them. The wind tugged at the pages and she looked down again, it was true that the De Winters had produced stunning witches and wizards, each generation had added something new. Her older brother Julian had created layered diagnosis spells to aid him in healing and Peter had discovered new techniques for wand creation and yet she hadn't heard of the writer of this book. Her elegant fingers turned again to the front of the book and she read the looping script with curiousity:
Melisande De Winter
I wonder who she was
The thought idled through her mind as she returned to her place and continued to read.

Scott was sitting on the grass, a nearby tree resting behind his back. His knees were pulled up to his chest while a book rested on his thighs. The book was on Charms, which the Professor had assigned them to study a whole page worth of spells, and then copy down what the spells had ended up doing. It wasn't too hard for Scott for he was very good at Charms, but he was just really too tired to do anything.
Flipping a page, Scott grabbed his wand out of his jeans pocket and lifted into the air, mumbling the charm, 'duro' at a small bush not too far away.
Immediatly, it had turn into stone. With a slight grin, he turned and grabbed a piece of parchment out of his bag with a quill and some ink. Placing the parchment on his book, he dunked the quill into the ink and wrote down:
Duro: Turns the object into stone
He had already written down everyother spell they had to do, so he had closed his book carefully and placed both the book, parchement, ink and quill back into his bag before closing it up and lying it down next to him. The wind blew his dirty blond hair everywhere, mostly in his face. His dark brown eyes scanned the lake, wondering where everyone was. It wasn't that bad outside, it was actually very nice. All he noticed was a girl who sat not too far from him, a book in hand. She looked a few years younger than him, but he wasn't so sure whatsoever.

She was idly flicking the pages with an long yet stubby nailed fingerl when a sudden gust of wind caught the edges of the pages and tossed them violently. The fragile pieces of parchment were in danger of tearing and fearing the loss of the elegantly scripted secrets that lay within, Megan swiftly shut the book and breathed a long sigh of relief. For a moment, she stared out across the water as the wind tugged her hair free from the confining braids and tickled her face. Megan would have stayed like that for some time, had it not been for the prickling sensation that flowed up her spine, someone was watching her.
Startled, the girl turned quickly and her eyes fell on the boy sitting not too far away, resting actually against the bole of one of the trees that crept up to the water's edge. He was older than her, she saw that in a heartbeat and his hair was a straw coloured dirty blond, beside his hand lay a school bag and his eyes watched her curiously.
Megan glanced to the left of her, making sure that it was her, the boy was looking at before she cleared her throat and attempted speech.
"Huh.....hi!" She called, annoyed that her voice sounded like a rusty gate as her nerves flowed into play.

The girls eyes closed, as did her book. Scott just took the time to actually watch her, wondering what she was actually doing, or planning on doing. The soft breeze blew her hair around her pale face, and he smiled. She had to be at least three or four years younger than him, maybe five at the maximum. And she seemed like she was enjoying the weather. Scott couldn't even remember when he was that happy and calm. Everything that was happening was very stressful.
When she glanced to the left, his brows scrunched together in confusion. Maybe she was trying to ignore him. But he didn't know.
When she looked back at him, he smiled brightly. Maybe today would be the day that Scott actually got a new friend. Didn't matter how old he or she was, as long as they didn't care about his sexuality or take it to heart.
"Hello." He told her, his normal voice quiet as usual. Scott being innocent as he is, couldn't tell she was nervous.

Megan thought for a moment, thinking about whether she could continue the conversation at distance or whether she should join him. A few moments passed before she came to a decision. She pushed the book into the battered leather satchel, stood and walked towards him, the bag banging lightly against her legs as she moved. Megan was tall for her age, long limbed and coltish looking as she crossed the intervening space to sit beside him. The long purple skirt swept the blades of grass as she moved and a long white blouse draped her upper body falling to her hips in soft concealing folds. She reached his side and sat, tucking her long legs beneath her with nervous motions.
"I'm Megan De Winter!" She held out her hand as her words gave him her surname. Inwardly she cursed at her lapse in concentration, ordinarily she tried to avoid mentioning her last name, it was inconceivable that he would not know the name of her family, it was well known in the wizarding world, the name and their reputation for magic and knowledge. He would think her a scholar or an artist, perhaps even an overly skilled witch. It was a reputation that she was supposed to live up and the weight of that reputation suffocated her.

Scott was a bit startled to say in the least when the girl suddenly stood up as quick as a lighting bolt and dropped down next to him. But, he thought it was cute as well. Especially since she was so young and little. Not only was it cute, but it was adorable. Snapping out of his thoughts, Scott smiled at the little girl. Megan De Winter. De Winter? Where had he heard that before? He didn't remember, but he did remember he had heard it somewhere before now.
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Megan. I'm Scott Fields." He inwardly cursed himself as well. If she had heard he was gay, there goes another almost friend. Oh well, it wasn't his fault that she may be a homophobe, that was all her fault. Or her parents. It wasn't like Scott to judge a book by it's cover, but he was just slightly worried at the moment.

OOC Just a quick point, Megan is actually quite tall.
BIC
"Hi!" Megan replied, a little less nervous due to the guy's friendly demeanor. She barely recognised the name as school gossip tended to pass her by, so she didn't bat an eyelid as he introduced himself. Personally she was happy that he hadn't immediately launched into an biopic about her older sibling, she could do without hearing about the exploits of her family.
"So what were you studying?" She asking, pointing a finger at the school bag settling on a safe topic for small talk.

Scott looked down at his books that lay next to him, right on top of his bag. They were for his Charms class, as he had just finished his homework he had put them down. "Oh, them?" Scott asked, pointing to his books, "I was just practicing for my Charms class, as well as doing the homework that needs to be passed in by tomorrow."
He grinned up at Megan, happy that she hadn't said anything about his sexuality. It was an awkward way of meeting someone, awaiting to see if they were going to acknowledge the fact that you aren't straight and, a 'freak' as some people managed to call him.

"Yeah I know that feeling!" Megan replied, relaxing slightly in his company. "I just spent all of yesterday finishing my transfigurations homework." She sighed and flicked a bug from her skirt. "And it wasn't easy let me tell you!" She smiled at him, a smile that changed her entire face and made her look pretty.
"But I did it and hopefully it'll be okay!" She relaxed a little further and absently rubbed the softening leather of the battered school satchel at her side. "I really worry about my homework sometimes!"

Scott smiled at the girl. She seemed quite tall, but he was taller than her. Which in turn made him think she was small. It was slightly weird, but that was just the way he felt about boys and girls that were younger then himself. "What are you doing in Transiguration for this symester?" Scott questioned her, trying to get a conversation started.
"Why do you worry about it? It can't be that hard, or, at least, it wasn't that hard for me." It was true. Scott never had trouble with school, only with friends.

"We're working on glass goblets!" She said after a moment, dipping her hand into her satchel to pull out her homework from the last week. The long stemmed goblet shimmered with different colours and patterns of flowers whorled through the base. It was a thing of beauty and it glimmered slightly as she placed it on the grass. "It's the crystalus spell, you know the one where you start with something small like sand." She looked at the goblet with some pride.
"I took so long at it but I'm glad at the way it turned out." She veered away from answering the question about her ability. She never gave herself any credit even when it was due. To her eyes she was always second best, even though she had no reason to think so. It had to do with her family and how successful they were. Her older brother Peter was good at charms, so good in fact that he worked for Ollivanders making wands. Carly was working at the ministry and had scored a record number of NEWT's, Julian was one of Mungo's top healers and had created several new potions and healing spells and Emily was a top researcher for the Wizamgamot. Compared to that she felt she had nothing to contribute, how could she top what her older siblings had done when they had done it so well?

Scott watched her dig in her bag, awaiting for what she was going to pull out. He wasn't really paying attention that much, but he could hear everything she said and was watching her at least. His mind was thinking in other directions though, not that he would let her know that at all. When she pulled out the glass that sparkled beautifully, Scott grinned happily at her. "That's beautiful." He hadn't remembered making this, but he didn't really remember a lot from third year anyway.
"I'm sure you are. I would be too, if I were you." Scott shrugged softly, before adding with a grin, "I don't remember too much from third year. It was four years ago, so..." He trailed off, not knowing what else to say to be truthful.
