Cavan had received a late Christmas present from his youngest siblings with his latest meal packets. They'd wanted to earn the money themselves and so it had taken a bit longer than it would have otherwise. In the box had been a guitar, shrunk down for safe traveling. It was the best present he could have gotten. After restringing it and tuning it with a natural ease, he attached the shoulder strap and headed down stairs to get some fresh air while he fiddled with the notes. He had once read a book on playing guitar and had told his family that it might be great fun to play. Now was his chance. He made it down the courtyard without much hastle and found a patch of ground that looked dry enough for him. He plopped down, leaning against a pillar there and started playing random notes. After a few minutes of making sure he could play all the notes he started putting them together randomly. He played little made up songs and then without thinking he started playing song he'd heard before. youtube.com/watch?v=ijMNecILi-Q

Audrey walked into the courtyard with a grim look on her face. Her usually bright features were tainted with a bit of anger. In her red hair, she felt a couple pine needles and pulled them out. In her hurry to get off the grounds after reading her parents' letter she had left it in her hair, not bothering to untangle it. Her green eyes looked rather dark from her brooding and there was a bit of red in her cheeks. So what exactly had happened to make her at all angry?
Well, her parents were making a decision that she wasn't sure would be okay with her. An older cousin of hers needed a place to stay for about a year, and her parents had decided to let him stay with her family. She hated this arrangement because the guy was an absolute idiot. Whenever she spent any time with him, all he ever did was patronize her because he was seventeen and of age, and because he felt like he was smarter. Whenever they discusses anything of value he had nothing to back his information up, other than a conviction that he "knew". This typically meant his parents, who were also idiots, had told him this.
A sound pulled Audrey out of her brooding and she looked up to find a Hufflepuff she vaguely recognized playing on a guitar. If she recalled correctly he was a firstie- sorry, let's be politically correct, first year. She didn't want to interrupt his playing, and the ground was wet, so she chose to sit on a stone bench nearby. She leaned her head on her hand and sighed. Trying to concentrate on something other than her parents' stupid decision, she found herself tapping her periwinkle colored fingernails to the music, just slightly.

After playing the song he stopped, shaking his left hand in annoyance. His fingers were sore after so little playing and he frowned, not only that, but they were extremely cold. He sighed, deciding he'd have to take a break and play some more later. Just as he was about to pick up and go, he looked up and noticed Audrey sitting rather near. He gave her a smile and clamored his feet rather ungracefully.
"Hi, I'm Cavan," he introduced himself with a grin, as he strapped the guitar to his back and approached her. He was flexing his fingers, trying to get the pain to dissipate, if he couldn't manage it, he'd have to go to the hospital wing. He didn't normally mind something silly like a little pain, but he had home work and translating to do and they involved fingers. He adjusted his yellow and black Hufflepuff scarf and then zipped his Slytherin hoodie higher to fight off a sudden chill. "Are you alright?"

"Audrey Leda Marlowe, Fifth Year, uhh... Ravenclaw." she gestured at her own blue striped hat with the small Ravenclaw emblem in the upturned bottom. It sat comfortably over her wavy reddish hair and it reminded her of a movie she'd seen last summer set in New York. She smiled through her brooding, glad for the distraction. "Yeah. Just listening. That was good. You new at it?" she asked, her green eyes catching his fingers and redirecting the conversation. She could tell they were uncalloused, so she assumed he was new to the guitar.
She had felt the chill as well and pulled her black knit cardigan tighter around her, and over her pale hands as much as possible. Audrey grimaced internally and thought about how she should have brought mittens or something. "Sit?" she invited, noticing he was still standing, and scooting over to the end of the bench. "It's a bit cold, but it's better than the least." She had a lot to say, but she was hoping the conversation would stray away from her, because her family was a touchy subject unless it reffered to anything from the ages thirteen and under.
The worst part of this visiting cousin was him staying in her brother's room. It stayed the way he left it when he died, and it was ridiculous that her parents would allow this cousin to come in and change it. It still smelled like her brother and looked like her brother. His posters and his neat way of arranging things in order of height- even his trophies from when he was younger, and it smelled like cough drops... it would probably smell like cheese or something if the cousin moved in...

"Audrey Leda Marlowe, Fifth Year, uhh... Ravenclaw. Yeah. Just listening. That was good. You new at it?"
Cavan gave her another bright smile, though her polite almost restricted mannerisms threw him off for a moment. "I'm a Hufflepuff... Thanks, I hope you enjoyed it. Yeah, I just started playing about an hour ago." He shifted from one foot to the other has he spoke, it wasn't because he was uncomfortable though. His legs had practically fallen asleep while he'd been sitting on the hard, cold ground and the was now trying to wake them up.
"It will be nice when spring finally arrives in full force, don't you think Ms. Marlowe?" And there he was, the habit he'd picked up from D'rorah kicking in, calling her miss and using her surname instead of using the first name he was given. He wanted people to call him by his first name, so why didn't he automatically do the same anymore? Probably out of respect for both the people he met and in some ways, D'rorah, she was after all like a sister to him.
"Sit? It's a bit cold, but it's better than the least."
"Thank you." He took the seat offered to him, shivering slightly at the first touch, but was soon comfortable. "Are you new here Ms. Marlowe? I haven't seen you around..." He had of course been out of touch since he'd found out about the shadow wars and D'rorah had gone missing. He was doing better now and felt like he'd been neglecting the very thing the light fighters were fighting for. He was doing his best starting the past week to make up for lost time.

Audrey wouldn't have guessed an hour. Once she got over her astonishment, she replied with a small laugh. "Ha... that was pretty good for an hour. I gave up after a week. I was terrible." she shook her head, remembering how her brother had taught her. Her brother was brilliant at guitar, and she was recruited into attempting to play it at age thirteen and she had also failed miserably.
When he called her Ms. Marlowe, she only felt a bit unsettled. More than anything, that made her feel old, and well, old she was not. "I can't wait for spring." She said, her eyes lighting up, but stopped herself from jumping up and spinning around. "I love spring and fall. Summer's too hot and winter's too cold, but spring's just right." she said, suddenly feeling like spring was a good topic to talk about.
When he called her Ms. Marlowe for the second time, she felt a bit more uncomfortable. Truthfully, she'd become so accustomed to 'Audrey' that Ms. Marlowe was way too formal. "Well, actually, I'm not. But you're new, I assume, so maybe that's why?" she asked. "I've been a little on the down low for a while, making less friends and all. We probably just haven't met yet."
As an afterthought, she added. "Please call me, Audrey... if that's okay with you."

"Ha... that was pretty good for an hour. I gave up after a week. I was terrible."
He chuckled, blushing a little, though it was hard to tell in the chill weather. Rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment, he explained, "I once read a book on how to play. My mom says I'm like a sponge when it comes to learning. I'm also really good with languages, and music is just another language, so that's probably why."
"I can't wait for spring. I love spring and fall. Summer's too hot and winter's too cold, but spring's just right."
He chuckled, "You sound a little bit like Goldie Locks." He remembered hearing the muggle story when he was younger, and more recently, reading it to his brothers and sisters. They always loved a good muggle fairie-tale, especially when read to them by their big brother Cavan. "I like every season, because they're is always something wonderful that comes with it. Like, it wouldn't really feel like Christmas without the snow of winter. You wouldn't enjoy cooling off with a swim and popsicle if it weren't hot in the summer."
"Well, actually, I'm not. But you're new, I assume, so maybe that's why? I've been a little on the down low for a while, making less friends and all. We probably just haven't met yet. Please call me, Audrey... if that's okay with you."
"I think maybe we were just both out of the loop for too long, I've been here since the beginning of the year. We are in different houses and years, so I guess it's not completely out there that we've never met before this. I'm very sorry, I don't mind calling you Audrey. Well, either way, it's very nice to meet you, Ms. Ma...Audrey." He blushed, having almost called her Ms. Marlowe again instead of the first name that she'd asked him to call her by.

Audrey grinned at his simile of being like a sponge. She'd been told that a couple times in her life too. "I play piano... well, I did, but I'm miserable at that too. Music was never my strong suit." Actually the arts generally weren't her strong suit. That really meant you stepped out of your comfort zone and Audrey was never quite as good at that as she had wanted to be. But, luckily, she had relative talent writing and that was always good enough for her to express herself. Music was more like a puzzle for her than anything, much like math.
She smiled brightly, "I love muggle fairy tales. I used to especially like Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel. I once refused to get my hair cut so I could be Rapunzel..." she admitted, a bit sheepishly. If one talked to all the people she talked to you could peice together much of her history, really, but she never gave more than a few tidbits to anyone. "But that was when I was three." she added quickly. She listened to what he said about the season and had to agree. "I mean, I enjoy winter, but only when I'm curled up in front of a warm fire... I don't actually like the feeling of winter..."
It struck Audrey that this first year was very formal about everything. She wondered exactly what influenced him to act this way, but thought it would a bit intrusive to ask. "It's nice to meet you too..." she said politely, biting back her curiousity. It nagged at the back of her mind though and she opened her mouth instinctively, before her logic forced it closed again and she smiled, although the back of her mind was occupied a bit. The younger kids of late had been pretty rude, but this one was still strikingly polite and it really did interest her. There were a good many people she'd like to send to whoever made this person so well mannered...

"I play piano... well, I did, but I'm miserable at that too. Music was never my strong suit."
Cavan smiled and nodded, "Everyone has their own talents ad gifts." He noticed that Audrey seemed a bit down and gave her a brighter smile. Is it normal for people to be down all the time? I know we're in the middle of a war, but most people don't even know about it... So why does everyone seem to have a cloud over their heads?[/color] He. of course, wasn't about to say anything, because he remembered quite well how mopey he'd been while D'rorah had been missing.
"I love muggle fairy tales. I used to especially like Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel. I once refused to get my hair cut so I could be Rapunzel... But that was when I was three."
Cavan couldn't help thinking it was a little odd that Audrey had not really commented on his comparison with her and Goldie Locks. In fact, it seemed like all she'd registered was that he was talking about muggle fairie tales and then she'd gone off changing the subject, not even seeming to get the playful joke. He smiled and listened, noting that she seemed to try and rescind what she'd said when she realized she'd gotten away from herself. "I wish I could say that I had that choice, my mum insists I grow out my hair until I'm of age. She says she wants me to look like a proper wizarding gentleman." He yanked at his pony tail, which held hair that when loose, would fall nearly mid-back, just passed his shoulder-blades.
"I mean, I enjoy winter, but only when I'm curled up in front of a warm fire... I don't actually like the feeling of winter... It's nice to meet you too..."
He could tell that there was something she wanted to ask, but it seemed she didn't want to be rude. He gave her a grin and just looked at her expectantly, "Go ahead, you know you want to. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back."

"I'm sure. Apparently, yours includes guitar. You should definitely stick with that." she said, drawing herself up a bit. She sometimes forgot to remember how to act with people younger than her. She didn't act their age all the time, it was just so easy to put yourself in the shoes of other people, she did it without thinking. But obviously, she'd mis-sized this kid's feet. He acted a lot older than he looked.
Audrey laughed, but was startled by the fact that this first year's mum believed that was the way to be a proper wizard. Though Audrey chose not to take sides in arguments, she had opinions. But she knew when to hold her tongue. Audrey had perfected the art of avoiding conflict, if she was in control of her temper. The only time it got out of control was when she was angry or upset. But luckily, today was just another day. She just needed distracting from home problems.
"Well, if that's what she's going for, you do look wizard-y." Audrey said thoughtfully, "Plus, in a couple years..." she noted, taking care to keep her tone neutral and adding a positive note. It was true, when he was of age he could do whatever he wanted.
When he prodded her to ask her question, Audrey reconsidered. If she'd been read that easily, why not ask? "Well, I just noticed you're an exceptionally formal person." she pointed out, not outright asking, just commenting. This would hopefully get an explanation and an answer from him.
