Kaylyn stepped gingerly into the common room, stumbling a bit before regaining her balance. After nearly two hours of wandering almost aimlessly through the halls, colliding with dozens of students, and tripping over countless obstacles, she had finally made it. She sighed with relief as she heard others moving about the room.
Deciding she'd better move before someone came through and tripped over her (though someone tripping over her would be a welcome change, seeing as it usually seemed to occur the other way around), she reached her right hand out, cautiously feeling for the wall behind her. Fingertips soon brushed cool brick, and Kaylyn slowly made her way away from the entrance. Moments later, she decided she was far enough away to not be a nuisance. Footsteps halted and she leaned against the wall, listening intently.
Kaylyn sighed in frustration, wishing she could find her way to a chair, or, better yet, a bed, but knew better than to attempt such a feat on her own. Only sheer luck had allowed her to find her way this far. Well, luck and then occasional kind stranger, anyways. She had lost count of the number of students she had had to ask in order to find the entrance to the common room.
Upon arriving outside of the common room she had hit another obstacle: getting in. She had felt about the surface of the door until encountering a knocker formed in a shape she couldn't quite discern by touch alone. The metal object speaking to her had surprised the girl so badly she had almost tumbled over backward in her haste to get away. In the moment it took Kaylyn to get over her shock, the knocker had continued its speech, ending in a long bout of silence. Kaylyn, having been too shocked to really listen to what the object had said, stood dumbfounded in front of the door, wondering what exactly she was going to do.
"Do you have an answer?" the knocker asked after what seemed like an eternity.
"A-answer?" Kaylyn stammered. "What do you mean? An answer to what?"
"Why, the question of course!" it replied. "After all, I can't let you in without an answer!"
"But, I didn't even hear the question!" she objected, panic rising in her voice. "How am I supposed to give you an answer if I don't know what the question is to begin with?"
"Perhaps you'll listen better next time," the voice replied before falling silent once more. Kaylyn gaped at the door, wondering what she was supposed to do next. It was just then that a group of students sauntered up. The knocker posed another question - which Kaylyn was still too stunned to register - before the door swung open to allow the students entry. Kaylyn had hastily made her way through the opening after them, making it in just before the door swung shut with a final click.
Once inside, she stood against the wall for a few minutes, blue eyes staring unseeingly into space. With another sigh, she slid down the wall to sit on the floor. Fingers fluttered up to brush at a few strands of light brown hair that had fallen into her face as eyes slid shut. Maybe she would just rest awhile, at least until she could find someone to help her.
