A long time ago, there was a man who loved a woman, and a woman who loved a man.
The two came from powerful families, their relationship had been arranged, but they had fallen in love anyway, having known each other since childhood. Their love was pure and true, which was the only thing that could be said of this story.
The man was not a good man. One day, without reason, he killed a very honorable man in his quest for power. He dishonored his family and was denied his right to marry his fiance the day before the wedding.
When the man came to take the woman so that they could run away together, to his horror, he found that the woman no longer remembered him. Her memory had been erased so that she would not follow him into the darkness.
Why did she suddenly remember that story just now?
Niobe stood at the window of the Common Room, staring. April was bringing about many showers, today was one of those days. It was afternoon and her classes were over for the day. Her long hair was tied back into a thick braid, her delicate eyebrows drawn down to a thoughtful frown. She was still in her uniform, a hand on her chin in quiet contemplation.
The story was an old one her mother once told her. It had been passed down from mother to mother in the Shao family. While it was not the full, in-depth story, it had held meaning. Basically, the moral of the story was not to allow yourself to be drawn into the darkness, for one could lose all the happiness that they had ever known. The man in the story had been a fool, he had let darkness consume him and had lost the only thing he truly treasured. She could not remember the ending, however, only that specific part.
The thought had came randomly, without preamble. It was strange to her, since normally her thoughts were always jumping around and with no real purpose or true destination in mind. For some reason, Niobe felt that this story should mean something to her, except it didn't. Or perhaps maybe it had something to do with the darkness of her dreams? Did it possibly mean that darkness was surrounding her? Perhaps she had thought of it as a unconcious effort on her part to remind herself not to fall into the trap as the man had?
The latter seemed unlikely, since if there was one thing Niobe was sure of, it was that she would never be consumed by darkness. Her mother had raised her properly, afterall.
So then, perhaps it was simply a random thought on her part that needed no real examining. She wasn't sure. In any case she was merely standing here, thinking, because she didn't want to go into her room and be reminded of the nightmares that she had been having constantly.
Since she had met with D'rorah, the dreams were becoming a bit easier to remember, but only the bits and pieces that she had been able to initially decipher from before. She had tried to continue the previous excercises without much success. Either she ended up wanting to vomit or ended up almost falling unconcious. Since neither were productive, she gave up shortly after.
The thought that she should be studying had crossed her mind, yet she found herself unable to move from her current spot. It was April, exams were soon and then vacation. She would go home and discuss things with her parents. She could have went to the grounds to practice her martial arts, but even that felt like a heavy weight on her body. In fact, that was exactly how she felt right now, leaden. As if something was trying to weigh her down.
A soft sigh. Niobe continued to stare out into the grey sky.
