On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, Hurricane Ida devastated the villages of La Barra, Sandy Bay and Karawala in one of the key regions where Peace and Hope operates on the isolated Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua. On Saturday, Nov. 7th, Peter Coleman will travel by boat to help evacuate victims, deliver large quantities of basic humanitarian/food items and assess the damage done to local and Peace and Hope infrastructure. We ask for your support and prayers during this mission. It is estimated that another 30+ inches of rain will overwhelm the already flooded Matagalpa River in the next 24 hours and may make Peter's mission particularly "challenging". If you are able to help us mobilize funds for this endeavor we would be most grateful. The monetary cost for the rapid deployment of a life saving mission of this nature is very high. Donors can give online at www.peaceandhope.org or mail a check to PO Box 242, Salem, MA 01970. Thank you.
Yeah... so, most of you know I went volunteering to Nicaragua with this charity over the summer, La Barra was one of the places I visited. It's a tiny place with about 240 people living there, only accessible by helicopter or boat. A hurricane went through there a few years back and only two buildings escaped undamaged - one of which was the PHT building we were staying in while there (big building in the top photo). You could still see where the eye of the hurricane had gone through the jungle, although I didn't have my camera with me at the time that was pointed out so I don't have any photos of that. But some photos I do have of La Barra and the people living there are here :
- the bendiness of the tree is due to the last hurricane they had.
But yeah... basically, they need all the help they can get, which means money... So any kind people out there with money to spare are very much appreciated
