((I figure this should be a oneshot, but it doesn't have to be.))
Keaira knew that eventually she would need to do this. But she had delayed it for a long time. At first it was too painful to think about it, but then her excuses turned to one thing, and then another, until most recently she blamed Wysteria for her not taking the time to come and check. However, she could not put this off any longer. The summer was approaching quicker than she had really thought it would, and soon she would take her tests, pack up and head home to Ireland. She needed to know before then.
Her classes were done for the day. And most of the students were busy eating or studying. The closer it got to exams the less she saw people idly wandering the halls. Students were busy trapping themselves within the confines of the library, or the common rooms, trying to cram a year’s worth of knowledge in an hour’s time. Keaira however didn’t feel the need to cram as the other students did. She felt confident in her ability to look over her notes and practice once a week, and be capable of passing her exams. Yes she was aware the OWLS were hard, but she had taken great notes, and color coded them for easier learning.
She made her way up to the sixth floor, and when she was about to round the corner that would reveal the corridor with the room of requirements, she mentally contacted Wysteria informing her of her intentions, so that she would not be caught off guard. As Keaira approached the stretch of hallway that she knew the room of requirements lay behind she saw several students coming from the other end of the corridor. As they got closer Keaira sat down, and began fiddling with her shoe laces, pretending to tie them as the group of other students passed her. As she finished adjusting her shoes the group was nearly at the end of the hall. So to keep any suspicions from her she stood up, and continued walking past the stretch of wall. When she was sure that they were gone she turned around, and began thinking of her destination.
Professor Dien Serlans office. Or rather the former Professors office. He had strangely made the room of requirements his home, and when he no longer was a professor Keaira had never returned to his office. However, it occurred to her many times since his death that she would need to come to this place once more, just to see. After her third pass the door became visible, it was a plain wooden door just like the countless other doors that the castle had to offer.
Keaira didn’t know what Wysteria had decided, and for all she knew the vampire could be in there right behind the door waiting for Keaira, but it didn’t matter she had to go in there. Keaira turned the door knob, and pushed the door open. As she entered the room she was greeted by the familiar scene of Dien office. His desk was there, just as the professor had left it, a mess. The kitchen area seemed untouched, as it generally was; Keaira had only ever seen it used to make hot chocolate. There were several chairs about the room, and a small couch that she had seen Dien nap in once or twice. Another doorway was off to her left, and Keaira knew that Dien had used it as a bedroom for himself and Teresa while she was there. But Keaira didn’t think she would find what she needed in that room. Closing her eyes Keaira felt and listened to the room. Each bit of metal called out to her. Most of them were faint rings, different tones of a singsong voice. Most of it was barely noticeable, but one thing resonated deep within her. With her eyes still closed Keaira moved towards the sound that echoed through her entire body.
After several steps, and almost walking into a wall Keaira felt like she had found it. When she opened her eyes she was staring at the couch. After an inspection of the couch and its cushion. Keaira pulled out her wand, pointed it at the back of the couch and said, “Diffindo” which caused the fabric to rip down the back of the couch and down to the seat cushion. The white cotton that was stuffed in the couch spilled out through the new rip, and Keaira was able to reach into the couch. As she felt between the springs and wooden beams that made the couch, she noticed that something within the layers didn’t seem to fit there. Grasping upon the object, she pulled it from the innerds of the couch. It was a spherical thing, the shone with a metallic hue. The sphere was both cold and warm to the touch at the same time, and looking into the swirling metallic colors Keaira knew she held the orb of metal. As she examined the baseball sized orb she noticed a small piece of folded paper was taped to the bottom of the sphere. Curious Keaira pulled it off, and unfolded the parchment.
Keaira,
If you’re reading this, I have failed and both myself, and Teresa are most likely dead. I can not idilly sit by knowing that she is missing. I know that I should tell you what I plan to do, but I think it better this way. Be strong, and don’t let yourself be consumed by the darkness. You are a good woman, and I know you will be able to withstand anything.
Dien
Keaira stood looking down at the handwriting of her first Elemental Master, completely lost for words. Without bothering to do anything about the torn up couch she sat down, and reread the note, thinking that it must have been the last thing Dien did before he left to find Teresa. It was somewhat surreal to think that it took Keaira 6 months to gather the strength to come into this office and seek out what she knew she would need. But there it was Dien’s last advice, and the orb of metal. All Keaira needed now was Zane.
