Paragraph Format: Tommy was born on the 18th August 1997 into a rather insecure family consisting of his 19-year-old parents and himself. His parents were married two months after his birth, although the marriage lasted for less than a year before they separated. Tommy went with his mother until she was declared an unsuitable mother, whence he returned to his father, who had remarried to a witch named Helen. From this new marriage, he gained two little brothers, Nick, two years younger, and Shane, five years younger. He is very attached to them and was completely against leaving them to go to Hogwarts at first, before they convinced him otherwise.
Tommy does not look his age – he appears more like a 9-year-old than an 11-year-old. He is under average in terms of both height and weight, and as well as this has a very youthful face. His hair is a rather boring shade of pale brown, which is usually straight unless he lets it grow too long, in which case it becomes slightly wavy. He has dark, serious blue eyes set into pale skin, with freckles dotted all over his nose. His clothing style is about as casual as you can get – hoodies, jeans and the like, all of which are extremely worn and faded. This is partly due to the fact that he likes his clothes looking like this, and partly due to his father not wishing to spend money on new clothes for his son.
History: As previously stated, Tommy was born on the 18th August to a young couple, Kevin Bryce and Jenny Teepwood. Both were only 19 at the time of his birth, trying to find their place in the world now were legally adults. They married a couple of months after Tommy’s birth. Neither had received particularly good qualifications (at Hogwarts for Kevin, and a muggle school for Jenny), and neither were particularly happy in their position as husband and wife. Kevin went out most nights and Jenny only stayed with him because she was obsessed with this magical world she had discovered by marrying him. However, a mere eight months after they married, she finally grew tired of him and left. Custody of Tommy fell to her.
For three years Tommy lived with his mother, as she also grew tired of caring for a small child when she could be going out with her friends. Just before his fourth birthday, he gained pneumonia, but Jenny did not notice the seriousness of his illness until a neighbour pointed it out. He was taken to hospital and the police became involved when questions were asked as to why it took so long for him to be brought for treatment. The ultimatum was that Jenny was deemed an unsuitable carer for her son. Custody of Tommy was passed onto Kevin, his father, who had by this point remarried to a witch named Helen and had another son, Nick, who was a year younger than Tommy.
Kevin had not thought much of Tommy over the last three years, sending him a card on his birthday but having little other contact. Although he was slightly resentful of having another child to look after he accepted the fact. Helen was quite happy to be looking after her stepson, since he and Nick would amuse themselves with less effort on her part than when it had been just Nick on his own. A year after Tommy joined them, Helen gave birth to another son, this one called Shane. The three boys became very close, always conspiring about something or other.
Of course, this temporary happiness could not last. Tommy had just turned nine when disaster struck. The family had just moved to Hogsmeade and the three children had decided it would be a great adventure to sneak into the Forbidden Forest next to Hogwarts. Helen, upon returning from shopping for food, panicked when she couldn’t find any of them and did a locating charm. Seeing that they were in the forest, she raced after them and found them just inside the edge closest to Hogsmeade, climbing and playing in a tree. While hurrying them down she did not see the creature approaching from behind until it pounced on her. Still in the tree, Tommy, Nick and Shane were forced to watch as their mother, biological or otherwise, was killed and dragged away by a creature they didn’t recognise.
Kevin was besides himself with grief and anger when he found out what had happened, and in his fury lashed out at Tommy. From that day, everything went downhill. Blinded by grief, Kevin began to send all his pent up frustration at Tommy and occasionally his other sons as well. He blamed, not completely without reason, his children for his wife’s death, but especially Tommy as the eldest. In his eyes, Tommy should have been sensible enough not to go anywhere near the Forbidden Forest, so much of the blame was forced onto his shoulders.
Two years after these tragic events, and Tommy is eleven. His father’s anger has not abated since Helen’s death, and although he and his sons put on a facade of a slowly recovering yet content family to the rest of the world, in reality life is not so for any of them. Nick is all too aware of what is happening to Tommy but says nothing, simply trying to protect Shane from the knowledge of what their father is doing. Tommy has drawn into a shell, terrified out of his wits and constantly walking on eggshells. The slightest thing will set Kevin off, be it alcohol or his kids making “too much noise” in his view. His anger is taken out on Tommy, and Tommy has learned to live with it. He tells no one because of the warning he received the first night his father hit him – “If you ever tell anyone about this, they will take you away. They will separate you from your brothers and you will never see them again. Or they might take you away and leave your brothers with me. That’s happened before.”
He received his Hogwarts letter back in September but Nick had a bout of dragon flu and Tommy was forced to stay home and help look after him. He recovered, yet Tommy kept putting off the day he left for the magic school, terrified that if he was gone then the brunt of his father’s anger would be forced onto his younger brothers. However, by the time it reached December he could delay no longer – there were no more excuses he could use to stay away. He finally reached Hogwarts, determined to go back home as much as possible to check on Shane and Nick but with a small hope that life at Hogwarts had to better than his life so far.
Personality: Tommy was never the most outgoing boy, but after Helen’s death he became even more withdrawn and shy. Two years of abuse and being told he is nothing and to blame for her death have taken their toll on him – he is convinced that it is his fault she died, and so accepts the punishment his father sends his way. Whereas some people will try to blame others for what they have done wrong, Tommy almost always blames himself, on matters other than his stepmother’s death. He refuses to admit this out loud though, just stores the knowledge inside of him and stays silent in his self-condemning.
Despite the constant putting down, Tommy has always tried to protect others from Kevin’s anger. The few friends he had before Helen’s death left because of the sudden coldness he directed at them, as much as it hurt him. He wouldn’t let anyone come around their house in the fear that either they would be hurt by Kevin as well, or that they would witness himself being hurt and tell someone. That would lead to him being taken away from his brothers, he was sure of it.
More than anything else, Tommy would protect Nick and Shane. Even when he knew that protecting them would result in more pain for him in the future, he never stopped trying to keep them from getting hurt, and even tried to stop them from finding out what Kevin was really like. This last attempt has failed on Nick, who knows what is happening, yet Shane is completely oblivious to what is going on. He has only a vague memory of the day his mother was killed and cannot really remember her anyway. Sometimes he will laugh and make fun of Tommy, saying that he is clumsy and messy because of the bruises and dirt often covering his elder brother, but still Tommy says nothing, however much it hurts him.
Tommy is extremely self-reliant, having basically taught himself how to do the tasks that Kevin should have been doing for them. He has learnt to rely on himself and only himself, so that he cannot be let down again, and hates having to ask for help. Instead of this, he focuses his efforts on his brothers, so that they rely on him rather than their father. For obvious reasons, he has trust issues – in fact, the only people he really trusts are Nick, and Shane to a certain extent. He is instantly wary upon meeting new people and will automatically flinch should anyone pass by him too closely. He is by no means a perfectionist, and what he does own is almost always in a mess; he has no organisational skills so speak of.
One thing that Tommy has always been fascinated by is the stars. They always seemed so surreal to him, untouched by the trivial events going on below them. Apart from an escape from the abuse he lives through at home, Astronomy lessons are what Tommy is most looking forward to when he joins Hogwarts. Like most boys his age, he does enjoy quidditch but is not very good at it because he has not had the chance to practice.
He is determined and will not give up easily. However, if he gets into a disagreement or argument with someone he tends to automatically back down and defer to them, because this is what he is used to doing when it comes to Kevin. He is keen to please others yet is surprised when they do actually offer praise in return. He gets nervous when he is not sure of the best course of action, and always tries to do what is right in his eyes. He is down-to-earth and has over the course of the last two years been disillusioned in his view of the world.
