Kang nodded at her words, but he could tell by her words that of course his actions had been a cause as well, bring back memories... although why trying to kiss her should bring back memories of being attacked, he wasn't sure and didn't really want to think on too deeply. Probably just because it was dark and he was putting her in an uncomfortable situation, he assured himself.
He took a seat in one of the rather plain wooden chairs, leaning back and tilting the chair slightly, its front legs lifting off the floor as he surveyed her. She was certainly right about looking much worse than usual – everything about her appearance said she had been subject to one too many corrupting experienced. He was worried, of course, but he still didn't think that she could corrupt at any moment. The D'rorah he knew was far too stubborn for that. There was no chance she would let Dark Phoenix get that strong a hold over her, especially after the attack. But her appearance was no excuse for the trainee, who should know better. If anything, her appearance should make her more respected, because it was obvious she had put her own life both on hold and on the line for the cause that everyone in this monastery was working towards.
[teal]"So?"[/teal] he responded bluntly. [teal]"They know what happened, they know just some of what you've been through and they should know you're going to look like this. They should also know how stubborn you are. Are you really going to let Dark Phoenix win by corrupting you?"[/teal] he asked rhetorically. [teal]"They should respect you for what you're risking. You don't have to do this, and you didn't chose to have this role."[/teal]
He frowned at her words, rising from his seat and the chair legs clattering onto the stone floor as he stepped forward to stand beside her. [teal]"Of course you're human. You're just as human as me,"[/teal] he assured her, wrapping a gentle arm around her. [teal]"And I know, even if you don't, that you'll never become a monster."[/teal]

D'rorah frowned as Kang tilted his chair back. He well knew that it drove her crazy... they'd had the discussion at length. "The chair is not engineered to handle stress on its joints from that angle; it would be easy for one to tilt too far back and fall; it divots the floor..." Of course, most of the time she was just trying to get a rise out of him. Tilting a chair back was just another manifestation of Kang's refusal to accept authority and arguing over it was another manifestation of D'rorah's preference to stay with rules and protocol. He wasn't going to keep all four legs of the chair on the ground just because someone said that's how it was supposed to be used.
As he started arguing back, she listened quietly. She had expected him to argue. [blue]"I choose it every day,"[/blue] she corrected him as he pointed out that she hadn't chosen the role. [blue]"I chose it at first because I was a young girl and I wished to please my father and Master Xiu... later I chose it because it seemed to be the only right choice to make."[/blue]
She didn't react as the chair clattered to the floor. A moment later, Kang as at her side. She looked over her shoulder at him as he spoke. She smirked slightly, though the expression was weary as well. [blue]"You have always been biased in my favor, Kang,"[/blue] she replied. [blue]"I have been close to the edge... and I know that one's willpower cannot always be enough to keep one from falling over. Of course, I shall do my best to avoid corruption... but it is difficult at times,"[/blue] she added. She sighed and allowed herself to remain for a moment with his arm wrapped around her. He was so warm... that was one of the things she missed most... simple body heat, which everyone took for granted. The human body is warm. [blue]"HOw have things been with you?"[/blue] she asked. [blue]"Surely, you must have had some interesting things happen to bring you here again."[/blue]

Kang hadn't even thought of D'rorah's dislike of him tilting on the chairs – to be honest, he had almost forgotten her objections completely, it had been so long since anyone had mentioned it. It was just a habit he had – a bad habit, according to her. Although, even if he had remembered her objections, it would not have made him act any differently. He knew well just how far he could tilt back the chair before it fell backwards and placed him on the floor, and the floor here was stone so it wouldn't put dents in it.
[teal]"You might choose to be in the war, but you didn't choose to be a Shadow Warrior. You didn't choose to have all this responsibility and risk of corruption and death,"[/teal] he argued back. He was well accustomed to debating this with people, and D'rorah was no exception. He raised an eyebrow at her comment that he was biased. [teal]"Well of course. That doesn't mean I'm not right though. They do need to treat you with more respect, especially if you're going to become a Master,"[/teal] he reminded her. He tightened his arm slightly as she sighed, remaining silent for a few moments alongside her. Before, he had always had that little edge on her regarding height, but now it appeared he had stopped growing and she had continued – she was at least half a foot taller than him, he realised.
[teal]"With me? Well, y'know... got involved in Dark Phoenix again by accident, I realised and protested, she took me hostage into the Shadow Realm, my uncle – who worked for her, it turned out – rescued me, I had nowhere else to come. I couldn't heal myself by that point. And I'd lost my jobs in Yinchuan, and my apartment because I hadn't paid rent... I didn't really have anywhere else to go. Then Master Xiu offered to let me train to be a healer, so I actually had a reason to stay,"[/teal] he explained, in as brief a summary as he could. He didn't mention Huan, for now. That was still rather a sensitive subject.

D'rorah sighed. She and Kang had certainly debated at length the matter of choice in the war. She could have given it all up years ago when she had first been discovered... though she had never truly considered that to be an option. Of course, she had been so young. She wondered if she might have chosen differently had she been older when she was discovered. Probably not though; she had practically been raised to be a Shadow Warrior... she'd had a very good start as a scribe. She wondered now that she was older how her father had truly felt about her being identified as a Shadow Warrior. If she had a daughter who had been chosen for such a dangerous role, she would have been honored and terrified at the same time.
She listened quietly as Kang recounted the string of events that had led him back to the Monastery. [blue]"Had I know... I would have come after you,"[/blue] she replied as she turned to look at him. [blue]"I would never have left you to Dark Phoenix if I had known you had been captured."[/blue] She sighed a took a seat at the table.
[blue]"After I left that night and was told I would be going to Hogwarts, I packed my things. It has been a difficult year,"[/blue] she remarked. [blue]"It seemed as soon as I found a new Lightfighter, he or she either ran off to join Dark Phoenix or was killed somehow... I had found the Elemental Master of Water... a fellow named Gat Soldier. He turned against me... I ended up being tortured by him in the Shadow Realm. When I finally found my own Elemental Master, he disappeared before we even had a chance to join. I found the next when I was on the very edge of corruption. He joined with me and pulled me back... but then ran off on a personal vendetta and ended up being corrupted and killed. My next... Mallan... he was here for training. He had joined with myself and with the Shadow Warrior of Water to try to anchor us both. While he was here, I was captured from the wand shop where I had been working. I believe his slow decline happened about the time I was being tortured for information,"[/blue] she sighed and shook her head. [blue]"I should have been here with him... and then there was Mister Cooper, our Master of Earth. We were together for several months and quite happy... but when I returned from my torture with no one to anchor me, I was almost completely emotionless. I was nearly corrupted. The others had to use crystals and draw as much of the darkness from my veins as they could to keep me from truly corrupting. By the time I had found a new Master of Wind, Mister Cooper had been captured... and Dark Phoenix ruined his mind to try to hurt me,"[/blue] she shook her head. It had been an awful year, actually. [blue]"Kerridon saved me that night... and things are more stable now. I have Bryan Kelley, current Master of Wind and Kerridon to help anchor me... things seem to have calmed for the moment. But that only makes me worry more about what is to come."[/blue]
She looked over at Kang. With what he had been through and what she had been through, it was a miracle either one was still alive. Realizing that, she rose from the seat she had taken and wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tightly. [blue]"I have missed you, Kang... and most days I truly wish you had been the one fighting at my side. I feel like we would have had so much more accomplished."[/blue] She took a deep breath and swallowed before withdrawing and taking her seat again, her more customary mask of emotionlessness in place once again as she began serving out dinner for each of them.

Kang shrugged at her words, having not even thought of it that way. Trust D'rorah to try and blame herself for not being there for him, when he had been the one to run away in the first, he had succeeded in cutting all ties with her previously by scaring her away. [teal]"And how were you supposed to know? I hadn't spoken to you in years. No one else knew I was there apart from my uncle – they all thought I was still working in Yinchuan, and some of them didn't even know that."[/teal] He watched as she sighed and took a seat, turning to lean against the wall next to the window so he could see her as she spoke.
He listened carefully as she recounted events, frowning as she spoke of all the Elemental Masters she had gone through. That was not at all healthy for her... He had assumed when he had left originally that her Elemental Master would be found soon enough and she would be anchored well – but that didn't appear to have happened. Instead, she had gone through numerous Elemental Masters, known of whom had succeeded so far... she had been forced to keep herself anchored. That had been his job before... and he should never have given it up because of his own pride.
[teal]"I'm sorry,"[/teal] he spoke up again, shamefaced. [teal]"I shouldn't have left... if I hadn't, I could have been the one fighting by your side. I would have kept your properly anchored, rather than you trying to teach your own Elemental Masters how to do their job."[/teal] He accepted her hug with slight surprise but glad that she didn't still seem to harbour any more doubts about his intentions that night. As he saw her emotionless mask fall back into place he sighed. [teal]"Dee, you don't have to pretend with me. Don't hide away,"[/teal] he requested as she started serving out dinner. He took a seat at the table opposite her as he thought over all he had heard. [teal]"Who is this Kerridon?"[/teal] he asked curiously, having not heard that name before.

As he apologized, D'rorah could see the shame on Kang's face. [blue]"I understand why you wanted to leave, Kang. It would have been difficult for anyone to be faced with a constant reminder of what he lost. You had to deal with the shock and disappointment of your family. I know how hard you worked to train. It must have been devastating to feel as though everyone's expectations were weighing on you... and then, through no fault of your own, you disappointed them. And now you are back and dedicated to the cause once again."[/blue] She waved her hand dismissively. [blue]"I would rather have you here now and glad to have me about, than have had you resenting me the entire time if we had been together."[/blue] She paused a moment. [blue]"And even if you might not have admitted it to yourself, you know you would have resented me if you had stayed."[/blue]
As he asked about Kerridon, D'rorah's stony demeanor dropped and she actually smiled a bit. [blue]"He was a spy for Dark Phoenix... sent to Hogwarts and tasked with hunting out the Lightfighters, of course,"[/blue] she began thoughtfully. [blue]"I thought we might be... friends before I learned about his affiliation. I was so disappointed in him when I did learn."[/blue] She smirked, [blue]"I gave him a thorough history lesson on the Shadow Wars and showed him that we do have hope of winning... and that victory of Dark Phoenix would be no victory at all for anyone who was not a Shadow or the like. He changed sides... became a spy for us... and he and I became more like friends, I suppose. The night Mister Cooper turned on me in the common room, Kerridon came after me and took me to a safe place to recover when I had passed out from the overload of psychic and magical energy. That was the night we first kissed..."[/blue] she trailed off, her fingertips rising and touching her lips for a moment. [blue]"No one knows except for Bryan, of course... if Dark Phoenix were to find out, he would be in grave danger... or she might use him to get to me somehow. We cannot even think of one another freely. One never knows who might come across such thoughts... but when we are together... I feel as though things are finally right in the world for at least a while."[/blue]
She smirked at herself. [blue]"I sound like an absolute twit,"[/blue] she said mockingly. How often had she thought derogatively of girls who got all starry-eyed over boys. [blue]"I think he will be here this summer for training."[/blue] She sighed. [blue]"I do find the secrecy wearying... leaving is so difficult when we do not know when we might see one another again."[/blue]

[teal]"I was being selfish though,"[/teal] Kang pointed out. [teal]"Just because it was hard for me to not have the Elemental Powers, I still knew how to anchor you. I knew we had no idea who your real Elemental Master was or where he was, you had no one to anchor you. But instead of thinking about that, I just left you, and I shouldn't have."[/teal] Kang had never really thought about this in much depth before, especially with D'rorah so far away. Out of sight, out of mind. But now he was thinking, he was just beginning to realise what a stupid mistake it had been. It might have cost D'rorah's life. He blinked in surprise at her last words. [teal]"Resent you? No I wouldn't have,"[/teal] he countered immediately. How could she think that? Resented the person who took his place, definitely. But he couldn't imagine resenting her.
Kang was surprised to see D'rorah actually smile when he asked about Kerridon. This other boy had obviously had quite an effect on his sister, if she was smiling at just the thought of him. He listened carefully to her words, beginning to smirk as she continued... especially when she touched her lips at the memory of kissing him. Whoever would have thought D'rorah would go misty-eyed at the thought of a boy. At least she did have someone, even if it was bound to secrecy.
He smirked even wider as she came out of her daze and mocked herself. [teal]"I never thought I'd get to hear you talk like that,"[/teal] he teased her with a grin. [teal]"I can't wait to meet this boy who makes you go off into a mental fantasy,"[/teal] he added with an even wider grin. [teal]"Kerry, you said his name was?"[/teal] he asked innocently, his eyes dancing with humour.

D'rorah sighed at Kang's counterargument. He was just as stubborn as she. [blue]"Well, as you see I am here and whole and well,"[/blue] she replied. [blue]"So there is no need to find anyone to blame, esecially not yourself."[/blue] She gave him a pointed look. [blue]"And that is the last I expect to hear on this matter for the day,"[/blue] she finished. She'd never really thought to blame Kang for not staying to anchor her... she'd blamed him for trying to molest her when she needed a friend, but it had seemed logical that he would stop working with her once it was discovered he was not her Elemental Master.
Seeing his smirk as she came out of her day dream, she smirked back at him. [blue]"His name is Kerridon,"[/blue] she replied, pronouncing it very distinctly, [blue]" and, if you had told me when last we saw one another that I would ever even want to be kissed, I would have sent you off for mental treatment,"[/blue] she replied. [blue]"If my father were here today, I am certain he would scarcely believe it. He always said I was too unwilling to suffer fools to bother putting up with men."[/blue] She looked pointedly at Kang as she said this last, her gaze teasing. [blue]"But then, Kerridon is not foolish... we are a lot alike in that respect, I suppose."[/blue] She thought for a moment. [blue]"In fact... it may be possible that I am the more emotional of the two of us,"[/blue] she added with a bit of shock.
[blue]"In any case, you will have your opportunity to meet him this summer if all goes according to plan. I hope to have all of the Lightfighters here for training."[/blue] She shook her head slightly. [blue]"Thinking of the motley crew we have assembled alternately inspires great amounts of dismay or hope."[/blue]

Kang couldn't help but smirk slightly at D'rorah's exasperated sigh. She should know by now better than to argue with him on this subject. He could be just as stubborn as her if he wanted to, and that was saying something. It had made for some very long arguments a few years ago when they had still been training together, normally on the very same topics they were still discussing now – apparently time apart hadn't changed either of their opinions. He would have argued further, but she seemed to want to put an end to it... and as loath as he was to let her have the last word, he really didn't want to spend all his time with her arguing.
[teal]"Kerridon,"[/teal] he repeated carefully with a grin. [teal]"Nope... I prefer Kerry,"[/teal] he told her decisively, still smirking. [teal]"I knew it had to happen eventually, you just had to find the right person. And apparently you managed to find two,"[/teal] he added, continuing to tease her. This was one subject he had never really been able to tease her about before, but now he had the chance he was going to take advantage of it all he could.
He raised an eyebrow when she said he was less emotional than even her. [teal]"D'rorah, I am not certain that is even possible,"[/teal] he told her. [teal]"I have never met anyone who controls their emotions better than you, even Master Xiu or your parents,"[/teal] he pointed it out. [teal]"And I cannot wait to meet him, you will have to introduce me,"[/teal] he told her. [teal]"I'm sure we'll have lots to talk about."[/teal] He didn't worry about the other lightfighters at Hogwarts for now – if D'rorah had trained them he was sure they would be fine. The prospect of Kerridon visiting was much more interesting.

D'rorah shook her head slightly as he insisted on using "Kerry" for Kerridon. She was certain Kerridon would not like that in the least. It would likely be as annoying for him as were people to her who addressed her as Dee. Only a very few people could do that without annoying her or earning a scowl in response. Kang was one of them. [blue]"Two... yes... there was Dylan Cooper as well, I suppose,"[/blue] she replied quietly. [blue]"Before everything happened between us, we were quite happy."[/blue] She looked up at Kang. [blue]"Even though I am of course very happy with Kerridon, I sometimes feel guilty for having left Dylan after he returned to his normal self. It was only... there was something broken between us in that whole ordeal that I could not find it within myself to fix."[/blue] She sighed. [blue]"Everything was so confusing. And then I had Kerridon on one hand and Dylan on the other... and I was left with the choice of breaking one heart or the other when I hated to cause pain to either one."[/blue] She looked down and then up again. [blue]"It was just... Kerridon and I made more sense, I think. We are so much more alike and we work better together. And I worried that with the pull he had on my emotions, Dylan and I might hurt one another again. I realized that only the emotional connection wasn't enough, somehow."[/blue]
It was something she had thought about a good deal. At least, she had thought about it in between thinking about everything else and worrying about Shadow Wars and one thing or another. She had known she would have to make the decision, and there was no part of her that regretted being with Kerridon... there was only a part of her that hated that she had hurt Dylan.
She smiled and laughed very lightly as Kang said he was certain that he and Kerridon would have a lot to talk about. [blue]"I assure you that it is quite possible,"[/blue] she replied. [blue]"Anyway, I will be certain to introduce you. You are both practically like family to me by now."[/blue] She smirked at Kang. [blue]"Do try not to be too horribly vexing, will you?"[/blue] she teased him. [blue]"I see no reason why the two of you should not be able to be friends, after all. It would make things more pleasant for everyone all around."[/blue]
She looked down at her dinner and took a few bites, having forgotten it while they were talking. It was starting to get cold now, but it was still quite good. [blue]"You know, I always missed having decent vegetarian food about,"[/blue] she remarked after she had swallowed. [blue]"The house elves at Hogwarts try their best to be accomodating, but I think they were a bit bewildered by having a vegetarian in their midst, frankly."[/blue] She looked over at the clock. [blue]"I wonder if I should retrieve the Bryces to see them to bed or allow them to find their way on their own. They are bound to be a bit bewildered in the midst of all of this, I imagine. Though, the middle brother, Nicholas, seems quite determined to do everything he can to impress upon me the fact that my presence is neither desired nor necessary."[/blue]

Kang smirked as he saw D'rorah shake her head at his insistence. He was well aware that he was one of very few she allowed to call her 'Dee', and wondered whether this Kerridon would have the same reaction to his nickname as she normally did. He listened curiously as she spoke of Dylan Cooper, finding her situation quite unfamiliar to him. He had always had plenty of choice in women and choosing between them had never been an issue for him; just mix and match between them, then you got the best of everything. The only difficult choice for him had been with Huan at the very beginning, but that really hadn't taken him too long to work out in the end – he had just needed to get his head in order.
He did have experience of losing someone you loved, though, and could not help but feel a little sorry for Dylan – Dark Phoenix had caused him to lose D'rorah, and now he had been replaced. Kang could only hope that no one had replaced him in Huan's life yet – although maybe that would be better. Maybe then he could move on. [teal]"You know, love doesn't always 'make sense',"[/teal] he said quietly, not wanting to undermine her decision but wanting to point it out anyway. It didn't really surprise him though, that she had made a choice based on logic. This was D'rorah, after all. And so long as she was happy, he was happy with her choice.
[teal]"But why should I not be too horrible vexing?"[/teal] he asked plaintively, in a voice that didn't quite match his smirk. [teal]"If he truly is like family then I must treat him as such,"[/teal] he pointed out, attempting to appeal to her logic.
He glanced down slightly in surprise as she started eating, having quite forgotten about the food she had set out. He was relieved as she started speaking again, not really feeling like eating too much despite her presence. [teal]"I'm sure they'll be fine – and someone will come and get you if you are needed."[/teal]

She looked up at him as he told her love didn't always make sense. She knew that, of course. It hadn't made sense the night she had kissed Kerridon. It had been very unlike her, in fact. However, the fact that it made sense helped. She was a creature of logic... and logic had to be involved in the equation somewhere for the whole thing to work for her. She could see a future with Kerridon... and hopefully Dylan would find someone one day who could give him the family he had wanted. He wanted children. He needed someone who could allow him to be strong. [blue]"I do know that there are things that do not always make sense, and that love is typically one of those things... but I am more secure with Kerridon. I see a brighter future for us together. I see the life I had hoped to have one day when my parents were still alive... slightly different, yes, but more intact than I saw before."[/blue] She smiled over at him. [blue]"And I am happy,"[/blue] she added. [blue]"He makes me very happy."[/blue]
As his tone turned plaintive and he asked why he shouldn't be vexing with Kerridon, she smirked and shook her head. [blue]"Lovely, just what I have always needed is for you to attempt to annoy my suitors away,"[/blue] she teased him back.
As conversation moved to the Bryces, she frowned slightly. [blue]"You have not eaten anything,"[/blue] she remarked. [blue]"And anyway, I should not leave them to their own devices in this new place. I have caused them enough stress for one night, have I not? I promised I would ensure they were settled in. That is the entire reason I am here--after they are settled, I must return to Hogwarts."[/blue] She pursed her lips slightly, not looking forward to leaving. She wished she could stay here, but there was a war that needed fighting and she could not fill her role properly from here.
[blue]"Would you care to walk with me?"[/blue] she asked, rising from her seat as she decided she was going to check in on the Bryce brothers. [blue]"I only wish to ensure they are comfortable in their new quarters. They have had a very difficult day, and I want to make this transition for them as smooth as I can."[/blue] She looked at the two barely touched dinners on the table and sighed. [blue]"Of course, I understand if you do not wish to come,"[/blue] she added. [blue]"If not, I will make certain I stop to see you again before I leave. Hopefully, I will see you again soon. I would like to come here more often now. I can check on the Bryce brothers and begin enlisting Master Xiu's help to finish preparing to take the Master's test."[/blue]

Kang nodded with a small shrug of his shoulder to show he believed her when she mentioned a 'brighter future' – he just wanted her to be happy, and it sounded like she was sure she had made the right decision. He didn't want her to be hurt any more by either of these boys than she had already. [teal]"I'm glad,"[/teal] he smiled back at her, [teal]"you deserve a bit of happiness."[/teal]
The talk of her love life – not really something he thought he'd ever discuss with D'rorah – made him think of Huan, but he pushed those thoughts away again. If she asked of his own love life he had his answer ready; it was true, as well. He was flitting from one girl to the next, all very eager – the occasional guy, as well. Saying he was happy with the arrangement would be a bit of a stretch, however. He would give up all of them in a heartbeat to have Huan back, but he knew that was not a possibility. He had implored to Master Xiu many times to no avail. As such, he just tried to avoid thinking about it and make the most out of the situation; he was now free to have whoever he wanted, he wasn't tied down any more. That was what he told everyone else, at least.
[teal]"Oh, I will not annoy him away. I will just ensure he knows what he is getting into, and make sure you are perfectly safe with him. And I ate earlier,"[/teal] he assured her in a simple lie with a shrug. He sighed as she mentioned returning to Hogwarts, knowing she would have to sooner or later anyway. Not knowing that Master Xiu was making arrangements for him to return with her, he wished he could have a little more time with her. [teal]"I'm not leaving you for the limited time I have you,"[/teal] he told her, as if it should be obvious as he rose. [teal]"You're stuck with me for the next few days,"[/teal] he added with a cheerful grin.

D'rorah smiled as he said she deserved a bit of happiness. She had finally started to believe that herself. It had taken a good deal of self convincing to embrace the idea fully, however. Even now, she was far more likely to put the training of her teammates ahead of things that would bring pleasure for herself. For the most part, that could wait... she would enjoy it far more without Shadows hanging over her head.
She thought she saw a change come over his face as she spoke. Though, she couldn't be sure of it without delving into his mind. And she would never do that without cause. He would tell her... perhaps. Kang was less likely to keep secrets from her. Eventually it would come out, when he was ready for it to do so. Whatever it was, she hoped it didn't cause him too much pain.
She laughed slightly as he said he would annoy Kerridon anyway. She expected no less from Kang. He enjoyed pushing people's buttons... finding the unique triggers that made others react. He had used it mercilessly on women, mostly to bring them to his bed. She also wasn't sure whether she believed he had eaten earlier... he looked as though he had lost a good deal of weight... perhaps even more than she had in the course of going through heartbreak and turmoil at Hogwarts. She had started to once again look more like her normal self after having promised Kerridon she would take better care of herself, but the neglect she had shown her body was still evident.
She rose from her seat and took his arm as they prepared to head out. They could go check on the Bryce brothers and then find something to occupy themselves. D'rorah wanted to visit the library to see what she could find there that would be helpful for her Master's test. Thinking of it dropped an icy pit in her stomach. [blue]"I suppose there are worse punishments than being stuck with you for a few days,"[/blue] she conceded with her own smirking smile. [blue]"Come then, we can see to the Brothers Bryce and you can work on finding some new and improved way to cause me annoyance, I am certain."[/blue]
As she led the way down the hallway, they came across Master Xiu, who was leaving the dining hall. He looked from D'rorah to Kang and smiled. "It is a relief to see that even old wounds can be healed with proper time and care," he remarked in the manner of a pleased father. "I was hopeful that the two of you would heal your rift before I began my next round of reassignments," he added. He smiled knowingly before nodding to them, heading off in the direction of his office.
D'rorah looked over at Kang, puzzled. [blue]"whatever do you suppose that means?"[/blue] she asked, wondering if perhaps he knew something she didn't know.

Had Kang been aware of just how much he was being scrutinised by D'rorah – the tiniest of his expressions, how thin he was, even doubting whether he had eaten earlier – he would have been more than a little disconcerted and more careful of how he was acting. He had become used to people not knowing him so well as she always had and his guard was down. People took his character for granted, and he didn't let them see anything else – it had been so long since anyone had seen through his guard. Or at least, shown any sign of it. It wouldn't surprise him too much if it turned out Master Xiu had noticed, but as far as Kang was concerned that didn't really matter. Master Xiu was half the reason he was like this anyway.
D'rorah's laugh brought a smile back to his face, distracting him from his own thoughts. It had been too long since he had last heard that, and he had missed the sound. [teal]"Good to know you can still put up with me,"[/teal] he replied with a matching smirk, hooking an arm around her shoulders as they headed out. Since she was taller than him it probably looked a little odd, but it was comfortable enough for him.
He didn't immediately realise as a little tension rose in him as they came across Master Xiu. He hadn't quite been able to fully trust the old man ever since the incident with Huan. He pushed it away as soon as he realised though – he certainly didn't want D'rorah questioning that. He smiled and nodded in response to Master Xiu's words, wondering what exactly he meant. [teal]"No idea,"[/teal] he replied, looking back over his shoulder. [teal]"He hasn't mentioned anything about reassignments... maybe he just didn't see fit to tell me,"[/teal] he added with a shrug and slight frown, smoothing his face over again a few seconds later.
[teal]"Where do you suppose those brothers are? If Master Xiu is out of the hall that must mean dinner's over,"[/teal] he pointed out.
