Alessandro proceeded to lean over and reach his hand into his crumpled side bag beside his desk. His fingers fumbled around inside for the feeling of his wand. He finally reached it at the bottom of his bag, and removed his ten and three quarters, sycamore, with a faint spiral carving wrapped around it. He began to swish it around in the manner in which Professor Archer had instructed.
He looked over his shoulder to see Keaira grinning mischievously and he knew what that meant. He nodded his head to her and made the pact of partnership. He stood up and moved over to her as the professor instructed the class to partner up.
"Ready for this?" He smiled devilishly as he feigned to cast the spell on her with his wand.

D'rorah reached into her sleeve and extracted the wand from a pocket that ran the length of her forearm. She practiced the wand movement as instructed before looking around for a partner. Her gaze swept around the room, landing on Dylan. Would he be interested in practicing with her? She looked over at him, trying to catch his eye with her own... as there didn't seem to be anyone in her year in the class, she figured she could at least make sure she partnered with someone who had studied. And knowing Dylan, she knew he would have certainly studied.

Placing a full stop at the end of his current set of notes, he looked up at the mention of pairing up. Grimacing, he was quite annoyed at this; no-one ever seemed to want to go with him. The corner of his eye being caught by D'rorah's gaze, he smiled slightly, thinking that perhaps things had taken a turn for the better afterall. Slightly anxious about the idea of pairing with someone so much more advanced than him, Dylan slipped his wand from the right-hand sleeve of his robes.
Practicing the movement demonstrated briefly, he smiled at her to indicate his willingness to pair up. "Shall we, Miss Philosophy?" he said quietly, a small smirk to be found on his features. Rising from his seat, he wondered briefly where they were to practice. Shrugging almost to himself, he flicked his wand and backed their two desks and chairs against the wall, creating a space for them to use. Smiling softly at her, his wand was twirled in his hand and he nodded to her, indicating he was ready. "Would you like to go first?" he inquired in a slightly mocking tone.

"We shall, Mister Cooper," she agreed, mirroring the slight smirk that had appeared on his face. D'rorah watched as Dylan made a space for them to practice, unconsciously nodding her approval. She caught the small twirl of his wand and smiled a bit more, thinking the gesture a mixture of dashing and cute. "Ah, is it to be ladies first then?" she asked quietly as she brandished her own wand. "Very well."
She stood facing him, wand held precisely with the handle resting in her palm and thumb and index fingers firmly gripping the lip right before the shaft. Inclining her head slightly to indicate she was ready, she waited for a reciprocating indication from Dylan before flourishing her wand in the proscribed manner while speaking the required incantation. "Defendo!"

Smirking, he approached her. Sliding his wand back into the sleeve of his robes, he looked around briefly. Seeing that other pairs were starting to practice, he wrapped his arms around D'rorah's waist. Hoping everything would look natural, he whispered in her ear quietly. "Try me," he said quietly, presenting a small challenge.
The indication that he was ready went, by no means whatsoever, unnoticed. In the next second, her wand had made the correct movements and her voice had issued the incantation. His arms were forced from her, along with the rest of his body, and Dylan found himself thrown forcefully against a solid object. Taking a second to regain his breath, he propped himself up onto his elbows. Breathing heavier than usual, he got back to his feet and laughed lightly. "My my, aren't we a talented witch?" he said teasingly, a smile playing at his lips as he dusted off his robes and moved back towards her.

D'rorah waited for Dylan to make his way to his feet, her eyebrow arching in a teasing manner as he accused her of being talented. "Considering your manner of attack, Mister Cooper, I am rather relieved I took you as my own partner, rather than allowing you to pair with one of the other young ladies in the class," she remarked quietly. "I suppose now, you should defend yourself from me."
She stepped forward, wrapping her arms around him as though to attack, leaning in close to whisper into his ear. "You may begin anytime you are ready." There was a hint of laughter behind her whisper as she awaited his defense.

Laughing, he waited as she approached him, surveying her with hungry eyes. Feeling her arms around him, he thoroughly hoped that his spell might be powerful. Not to hurt her, of course, but to at least show how much talent he had. You never knew when a good jinxing reputation might come in handy.
"If her majesty is ready," he responded in a whisper, a smirk evident on his features. Performing the required action, his voice was clear as he spoke the incantation. "Defendo!" he said, his wand flicking quickly through the air.

Gat sat there. Partnerless as usual. Though he did not care. He swung back on his chair and put his feet up on the desk. He already knew how to do the spell as he was taught at Durmstrang. He had half a mind to summon an inferi to see what they could do with it. His face lay expressionless as he searched the class with his eyes. Before shutting them all together. He lay back and rested. Thinking about the events of that day so far.

Jason was running. And not the casual jog of exercise, or the hurried movements toward a welcomed meal. Jason was sprinting. He was late. He'd always been a good student and couldn't recall ever being late before. He took the stairs 3 at a time, nearly collapsing at the top as he turned the corner. Down the third floor corridor and into the D.A.D.A. classroom. He didn't even bother to slow and try and make his entrance look less embarrassing than it was.
The door burst open as he skidded in, colliding with the nearest desk and ending up in a heap behind it. His elbow connected with the hard floor solidly and he let out a small grunt. Rising as recklessly fast as he'd entered, he nearly collapsed again but managed to land in an empty seat, breathing heavily.
"I'm sorry professor! I fell asleep out by the lake. I won't let it happen again. Ever. I mean, obviously I can't promise I won't ever fall asleep again. That would just be silly. And I may fall asleep by the lake too. I mean I like the lake. It's peaceful. usually. But I mean I won't ever fall asleep and be late to class as a result. Or get lost in a book and be late to class. Or spend too much time eating and . . . I promise I won't be late again. I'm sorry professor."
His eyes dropped to the desk before him and remained there as he tried to calm down, awaiting whatever punishment was coming his way and hoping any other Gryffindors in the room wouldn't be too mad at him if he lost their house points.

Observing with a playfully evil smile around his lips, he watched as most students remained in their seats, looking around unenthusiastically. His smile became significantly happier as Mister Cooper and D'rorah cleared a space for themselves, intending to practice with each other. Alex raised an eyebrow slightly as Dylan wrapped his arms around her and he smirked to himself.
Not entirely expecting it, Dylan was soon found flying across the classroom and crashing into desks. Becoming slightly alarmed, he rose from his chair and made to move forward in an attempt to help the Ravenclaw. The boy soon stood up again, laughing and apparantly unhurt. Extremely glad that his first substituting lesson hadn't resulted in a damaged student, he moved back behind his desk.
His back turned, he once more heard the crashing of a student into desks. Spinning around, he saw a new entrant to the class. Having heard of several late, rather dramatic entrances to lessons, his normally cheery demeanor was somewhat stopped in its tracks at the very same thing occurring in one of his own classes. Watching as the boy raised himself with a very fast pace, landing in a nearby seat, he coughed slightly. Receiving the complimentary apology and excuse, he noted that at least the boy didn't seem to have made up the reason for being late, despite the altogether weak excuse. As he ranted on just a tad and finally climaxed his tirade with yet another apology, he saw his eyes drop to his desk in a movement of regret for being late.
"Mister... Cruz, is it?" he asked briefly, remembering his picture from the student list he'd been given. "As legitimate as your apology seems, I will be taking five points from Gryffindor. Not only have you arrived late, but disrupted class," he added shortly. "You will also read up on grindylows and inferi, as well as the Revulsion jinx that we are currently practicing. Now, pair up with someone to perform the jinx. The incantation and wand movements are demonstrated on the board."
Removing his eyes from the young boy, he looked around the classroom. "Mr Soldier, kindly stop resting your eyes in my class and do what you're supposed to, or I will take five points from Slytherin," he added curtly.

D'rorah found herself repelled by Dylan's Revulsion jinx and landed several feet away on the floor. Making her way to her feet, she was surprised by the sound of the door suddenly bursting open. She arched an eyebrow at the boy's long and repetitive apology for his tardiness as she walked back to where she and Dylan were practicing. She was somewhat surprised at Professor Archer for taking five points from Gryffindor, he seemed the more amicable type who would almost never take house points. For her, it was a pleasant surprise to see a more no-nonsense side to him. Her eyes narrowed slightly as he mentioned Gat. She made a concerted effort to return her attention to the task at hand, not willing to waste any time on being angry with Gat. It wouldn't accomplish anything anyway.

Jason's head dropped onto the desk. So early in the year and he'd already lost his house points. It was the first time he'd ever lost his house points in all his years there. Come to think of it, it was the first time he'd had any influence on the house points at all. He resolved to win them back at some point.
He avoided (even more so than usual) looking at any of the students he'd seen in the Gryffindor common room. He wasn't sure how annoyed they'd be. This could be potentially detrimental to his plan of getting to know people. Well, at least the other houses would like him more.
Especially Slytherin he thought bitterly.
After his grand entrance, he wasn't about to approach anybody and ask them to be his partner. He fished his book out of his bag and spent as much time as he could absorbing the information it contained on grindylows, inferi, and revulsion jinxes.

Cursing her roommates for not waking her up, once again, Leilani jolted to class running over young students (accidentally, of course!). Making her way to the classroom she noticed that the class had already started. A frown crossed her face as she wondered whether or not to venture in. Then with a flash, a student sprinted in, taking a desk, causing quite a bit of “hub-bub”.
Leilani tilted her head slightly to the side and emitted a smile, this was her chance. Calmly she walked to the back of the classroom, and as the teacher and student conversed, she took a seat (boldly) next to the student that just arrived. Setting out her books and quills and furiously taking down the notes on the board, she turned to the boy sitting next to her.
“Don’t look so down,” Leilani whispered with a slight smile. Even though talking out wouldn’t have been an issue, judging by how much noise there was going on in the classroom. “I’m kind of without partner at the moment,” she said even more soft, a little shy, for she had never seen the student before. “And seeing that we are both late,” she let out a little laugh, “Care to be my partner?”

Jason's face planted firmly in his book, he didn't even notice the girl slip in quietly beside him. Possibly no one else had either. A battle raged within him. Humiliated as he already felt and inept as he was at talking to people, he wasn't sure how he could possibly acquire a partner. On the other hand, Professor Archer had clearly told him to pair up with someone, and he feared his inactivity would result in a further loss of Gryffindor points.
This was often the case when Professors wanted the class to split into partners. Always actually. Jason always silently hoped they would assign partners, but they almost never did and he was left sitting awkwardly until everyone else save the odd man out had found a partner. If there were an odd number of students in the class, it was inevitable he'd be working alone, or directly with the professor, which he almost preferred except for the public spectacle it made of him.
These thoughts whirred through his mind repeatedly so that he didn't even see the words in his book. The girl's first encouraging words went by with no response. He figured she was talking to someone else, maybe herself. When she spoke about pairing up though, he froze, his book dropping to the desk with a moderate bang, though it probably was unnoticed in the general commotion of the room. Still, he winced at the sound as he slowly turned to face her. His face flushed again as his eyes quickly found the quill lying on her desk and locked there.
"I . . . sorry. You what? Partner? Me? I mean yeah. That'd be great. I mean, crap, that makes it sound like I can't wait to push you away with the Revulsion jinx, doesn't it? I didn't mean it like that. I mean, not that I'm refusing to be your partner, ya know? Not like I'm just not even gonna cast it in some attempt to keep you near me. That would just be weird. I mean we don't even know each other. At least I don't think we do. I haven't seen you in the common room. That doesn't mean you weren't there of course. I mean, not that I think you've been hiding from me. Er . . . yeah. Yeah, I'll be your partner. I mean it's ok if you don't want to now. I understand."

Leilani’s eyes seemed to follow the conversation moving every which way the words went. “Oh no, it doesn’t sound like that,” she answered; glad that the boy had somewhat accepted her invitation. She hadn’t seen him around either, coincidentally. He could be from another house? “I’m a Hufflepuff actually,” Lei said in reply, once again trying her best to follow his pattern of conversation.
Boy, could he talk, she thought with a little smile. He must still be shaken up from the little tardee ordeal.
“Of course I still want to be your partner!” a smile danced across her face. She withdrew her wand from her bag, standing up in her seat. “Now if you’re ready, partner,” she realized, she hadn’t even the common courtesy of asking the boy’s name, “I’m Leilani.” Standing up, she didn’t even know what the next step was. Staring at the other boy and girl that had been practicing on each other, she noticed that they had, what looked like, hugging each other.
Lei brushed crimson, but tried to cover it up, by averting her attention once again to the other two that had begun practicing. If she had known that this kind of contact was involved, she might have asked a girl. Atleast the two partners standing up looked to know each other. What am I thinking? It’s just a little hug. Get over yourself.
